Up, Kota.

A soft whine of discontent came from a dark maw, listeners twitching and frown appearing on her pretty, slumbering face. The chill of autumn was warded off by the combined heat of the cuddling pair, but when the snow prince stood on mighty paws to lumber off away from her, the frigid air was suddenly no longer a distant annoyance. Wet nose nudged at one deep sapphire cheek, grunting and whining softly, insistently. Lakota whined back, vocal chords far from that of the ice bear, and thus sounding entirely different, but it got the message across. She didn't want to wake up. Up, Kota, the voice nudged at her again, something that was much harder to ignore as it resounded inside her own head. Awkwardly untangling her limbs from the curled position they had been in all night, more than unhappy with how the air rushed in to fill the spaces her legs had occupied, she began the process to consciousness.

Sleepy violet diamonds were revealed under dark lids, blinking languidly at lime gazers staring at her from above. "But it's cold~" she whined, huffing out a cloud of silken, crystallized air. Aodaun huffed at her, and if the bear were capable of rolling his eyes, he likely would be. There was no need to speak aloud, with their bond, but Lakota was often so lonely these days that it comforted her to do so. Her meeting with Ktulu still lingered in her head, waking her faster than anything else could have. Sighing softly in longing she looked out over the dark green mesa, covered in crisp newly fallen leaves, and wondered what she should do. Hana had disappeared for the second time, further breaking her already fragile heart, and Alleo discontentment in the herd was obvious. Were her decisions hurting not only herself, but everyone she cared about? Would it be better to just leave, to set her family and friends free? She felt as if she were caging them, shackling them to her when she was on a freefall down off a cliff with no real end in sight.

Aodaun whined, snapping her back to the present, and she managed a weak, tired smile. Dawn was already spilling across the horizon, the day slowly warming, and she couldn't afford to be caught in the arms of Morpheus any longer. Athletic legs pushed at the ground below, hardening in preparation for the frost she wasn't keen on anticipating. Autumn leaves clung to her hair and upon her back, but she was too stiff to attempt to shake herself free of them, and they reminded her of home. Technically she already was home, but the smell comforted her nonetheless. Ao exuded happiness that she could feel like an echo of her own emotion, and it brought a smile to her lips, love in her eyes as she gazed down at the one thing she had done right in life. Together they wandered over the crisp children of the trees, Aodaun exhilarated as he went crashing and tumbling through piles of the crinkling leaves, much like an over-excited puppy. He still had much to learn, but she didn't want to have to be the one to teach him. She valued and cherished his innocence, but also knew he was changing even now because of her, and what they experienced as a pair.

In her ears came a quiet rumble, a familiar one at that. Water crashing down various stones and boulders, tearing away at the mighty creations of Earth, wearing them down until they were smooth and slippery. The waterfall was a magnificent addition to the Foothills, one she hadn't visited nearly as much as she used to, lately. Her mind had been so occupied with all her emotions, things so foreign to her even now, that she'd been unable to recall the simple pleasures she indulged in on a daily basis.

Nigh every morning, the pool was empty. Lakota woke rather early, even when Aodaun had to wake her as he did that morning. She would have less time to herself, having woken up late, than she normally would have on any other morning. Most of the night patrol were heading to sleep, and the morning shift was likely already on their way to the borders. It was the time when she was least likely to be interrupted, not that anybody ever went searching for her anyways...

Again Aodaun interrupted her, not liking the twist her mind was taking, wanting her to focus on the awe she'd felt upon viewing the beauty of the sunrise as she did every morning. Golden waves of light fell upon the rippling pool before her, dancing and shimmering in the shifting heights of the water. Rose and pale lavender accompanied the dominant golden color, creating a collage of color that exploded across every reflective particle of the waterfall. Lakota couldn't help but glance around self-consciously before allowing herself to smile, dipping her hoof into the cold substance and relishing in the sharp jolt of awareness that traveled up her body. Shivering in a mixture of chill and relief as sleep shrieked and loosened its hold on her, she continued forward, Ao happily at her side. His ancestors swam in the arctic, with waters far colder than any winter she'd experienced, so this was comforting to the ice prince.

Lakota waded in up to her belly, inky plume bathed in the multitude of colors of the rising sun. Walking aimlessly through the water she nudged at Aodaun every once in a while, the two of them playing a leisurely game of tag until the cub grew weary, retreating to sunbathe on a rock lining the side of the waterfall. Lakota continued her swim, turning only when her mental probing was not answered. Violet eyes twinkled with amusement, and she couldn't help the laugh that chimed from her lips far louder than she usually did, seeing her little prince flopped on his side, mouth gaping, sound asleep. And he had been the one to yell at her for sleeping! Unstoppable giggles followed her as she swam closer, blowing air out through her nose and dunking her maw into the water, flinging her head up towards the rock he was dozing on. Ao jerked as the water splashed him, flailing and half-jumping into the water as he began to fall.

Lakota was there the entire time to ensure his safety, but his surprise had her laughing so hard her sides hurt, stumbling out of the water after her disgruntled companion, barely able to see with the mirthful tears in her eyes. She couldn't help it when Aodaun looked like an angry kitten, fur fluffed up, and her mind kept replaying that moment of shock. She merely hoped nobody was around to see her laughing so outrageously, so girlishly. A laugh that Ktulu had once teasingly made fun of.
