When the girl had first been born, it should have occurred to the Empress that her daughter would be as much of a wandering soul as she was, but somehow the thought had failed to occur to the shade until she had taken back to wandering herself. It was the thinking that had done it - not that she hadn't thought before, but it was different after her removal from the Basin. She felt different. She felt old. There was still anger in her, but it had changed as well. No longer did she harbor an inherent hatred of all that was not unicorn - that's not to say that she liked the hornless, but having become one herself if was difficult not to come to an understanding of some sort. After all, the hornless that she had met since her banishment had treated her more kindly than any of her own had, particularly her own family.

And that was where thoughts of Snö had come in.

The shadow-mare had rarely wondered about her daughter, for she felt that she had reared the young mare to be capable of fending for herself, even if the pair didn't have the best relationship in the world. She knew that she was a horrible mother, but she did not regret the things that had happened. After all, racist or peace-loving, leader or outcast, she still hadn't the slightest clue of how to be a part of a normal, loving family. She quite doubted that would ever change. But there were moments, scattered throughout her wanderings, in which she found herself wanting to know at least where her offspring was, if nothing else. She had come to see that certain bonds could, in fact, have a positive impact on one's life, and the acceptance of such did not necessarily make one weak. It had been a long time coming, but the realization had changed her.

She was not bitter. She should be - the old Empress would be beyond furious, busy planning out her revenge. But this Psyche, this strange, new, nearly-hornless soul, had withdrawn into herself. There was a certain level of numbness in her now. The passion was gone. She was not hateful, but nor was she happy. She was in limbo, unsure of herself and her beliefs and her life and nearly everything that made her who she was. And that was the problem. She knew who she was. She didn't know who she had become.

The shade had yet to venture into the Threshold, seeing as she didn't know how to react to most individuals she happened to stumble upon these days, but on this particular morning, she found herself (perhaps by accident, mind you) crossing into the lands that led to other places in the world. Realizing where she was, she began to consider the possibility of just going. Leaving. Disappearing into the wilderness. There was, after all, no one left to miss her. No one left to care if she lived or died. Given time, they would likely forget about her, about the legends that accompanied her. And perhaps that was for the best.

A dim splash caught the shadow-mare's attention, and she paused. A part of her wished nothing more than to melt into the shadows and disappear, but another, larger portion was curious as to who was so unwisely making such noise in a land that they, in all likelihood, knew nothing about. In the end, it was curiosity that won. A quick trot through the trees and then, standing before her, was none other than the filly whom she had been thinking so very much about.

"Snö!"
