She could see the questions in her daughter's eyes, and though a part of her longed to tell the sad, sorry tale, she wondered if Snö would look at her differently, as so many others had. A failure, a fraud, an idiot, a hornless; the names went on and on, a never-ending list of hatred that had been leveled at her even by her closest friend one she had lost her horn and her title. Would Snö be the same? Or was there still, against all odds, some semblance of family ties holding them together? Was there a chance for her to make amends for Snö's rather unfortunate, lonely childhood? Did she want the chance? Perhaps she would only mess it up, just like she had everything else...

But Snö had called her 'mom.' That had to mean something, didn't it?

Snö had grown, and she had matured, and here she was, open and accepting and not at her mother's throat as she had been so many times before, and the shade had to wonder if it had all been her own fault. After all, she had changed now, she was the one who was different - what if it had been her rather abrasive personality that had pushed her daughter away all along? And if that were true, had it been her fault that every other relationship, family or friend or lover or what have you, had failed so miserably? Had it all been her? Was she truly that bad? "It must have," she replied, her mind finally honing in on one other detail, "for you to return without your pet." She had never known the name of the mechanical wolf her daughter had been given, or if she had, she had forgotten.

She regretted that now.

A growl caught the shadow-mare's attention, and for a moment she thought that she had simply missed the creature, but as her auds pricked and her head swiveled toward the sound, she realized that this was a real wolf, and this one was very much focused on her daughter's throat. "Snö!" she yelped, too late, but relief flooded her veins when she saw that the wolf's attack had missed and the filly had launched her own attack in retaliation. It was a good thing that she had, too, for the rush of emotions had left the fallen Empress in a momentary state of paralysis; when had she grown so fond of her spoiled, bratty daughter? But it was only a moment, and then she had half-reared, her own hooves striking out at the beast's side, attempting to catch it as Snö's attack ended.

Her blood pulsed, pounding the beat of war into her mind again, and she was transported back to her last battlefield.

A single tear traced her cheek, and a wordless battle-cry rang through the air.
