"No!" Was it real, or was it the voice in her mind that struggled to come out through strangled, choking vocals? Either way, familiarity flooded her mind as her hooves thudded into the ground where the mutt had lain a half second before. The motion took another half second too long, for as she recovered her balance the wolf lunged for her right hind, dodging between her front legs with ease. A misplaced snap at his tail left her teeth clicking shut on air, and she braced herself for impact while wondering how many times she would make a stupid mistake in battle that would leave her horrendously wounded. But the expected bite never came, and she swung her hindquarters to face the newcomer and place herself between the wolf and her daughter, her auds flat against her skull and angry white showing around her amber irises. She was the epitome of the pissed off mare, and she wasn't afraid to let it show. But the dog's attack had paused, and as a moment passed with no renewed attack, she allowed herself to relax suspiciously, watching as the creature circled them. She stepped with him, matching his pacing, keeping herself between him and the pair behind her. But Snö stepped around her, firmly ordering the dog to do - or not do - something. The command was foreign to the Empress, who allowed her offspring to attempt whatever she may like to do while keeping a wary eye on the mutt. "Mauja," she greeted him with such clarity and without the purr that normally accompanied the greeting that he was sure to take notice, "It's been a while, darling." Again, her vocals lacked the menace, the hidden poison, the promise of pain that they normally held. There would be time for a proper greeting later; first, she had to ensure their safety. She had failed the herd. She would not fail her broken family. [W/C | ---] |
