I feared for her, my companion. We hadn’t an ounce of proof that they were somehow immune to this strange curse—yet, the undead seemed more interested in those of equine origin. Perhaps when they ran out of prey, smaller species would find themselves without hope. As we dared to cling. Hope. This entire fortress seemed build upon the fragile dreams, and lives that rested within. Just as it had been a shield for our ancestors many generations ago. It was hard to not dwell on the horrors above when you were living beneath the fury of a volcano. Though, that didn’t mean our stay in this cave was horrible; nay we had fresh food, water, and above all, safety.

Fina’s screech reached my ears from across the way. I had been traveling across the pit and overheard her cries echoing down—there was loud shuffling and murmurs as my family stirred. “Midas.” She called, “Apollo.” My steps quickened and I met the sweaty wide eyed patched unicorn; recognizing his shadowed frame in the flame light and faint illumine. When we meet I could see just how wide his eyes had gotten, the strained lines of sleep were only the beginnings of hollow circles that would emerge in later days.

Fina had led them here safely and was trailing off to complete her mission, quietly I murmur to her, “Thankee dear one. Thankee.” My gratitude couldn’t be measured.

A calm smile started to crease my face, chasing the dreariness aside and casting the dark corners aglow with fire into a genuine beam, “Aye, I welcome ye—we stand as not only brothers, but true kin now it seems. Our land has been attacked by the undead.” In an effort to solidify our bond my muzzle stretches toward him to brush against the velvet soft hairs of his snout, “They do not descend this place, and there is room and food enough for us all.” So far. Two clans living in one cave. Four? Mayhaps there might be a problem. My gaze catches the dark figure at his side, fresh worry ripples across a hauntingly calm face, “Eytan? Is Ktulu not in company?”
