He called, and they came, one by one. Flame-colored Ricciardo, and cheeky d'Artagnan. Mauja favored his Doctor with a lopsided grin. "Good thing you weren't around," he laughed, trying to give his friend the customary shoulder-bump. The new mare, Faelene, and dark, beautiful Huyana with a white wolf with her, sweet, innocent Lena and Coris, with all his usual odd adornments. Leyra, looking less thin and haunted; he favored her with a smile, meeting her gaze for a moment in acknowledgment before moving on Ulrik and his mechanical wolf. Another smile, this one somewhat darker, was given, a slight nod at the talk of seasons. Alan, looking as if Mauja had dragged her through the bushes himself to wake her from sleep, and Descaro, stoic and vigilant; silently Kou crept up beside the doctor, before looking at him with her blue eyes. Distant hoofbeats grew louder and Monster came stumbling in, ending up on his nose in front of Mauja, and Snö crashing into his hind end. A fond laugh escaped the King and he reached down to give his pet a reassuring nuzzle, before doing the same to his daughter, who had moved into reach. Cineviam and Deimos, dark shadows, lurked, one silent, the other not; Seiren came in, fat with a child that certainly wasn't Mauja's. His eyes narrowed, before settling on Lotus, who snuggled up to the Engineer. That was his work, though, and he gave d'Artagnan a sidelong, innocent glance. Aurelius and Delinne, Korra (who kept about as far away as Deimos, he noted with amused interest), and last of all so far, Lloyd, the towering, black percheron. "Worry not, Lloyd," he reassured the faithful stallion before turning to address all of the herd. Most noticeable in their absence were Lúthien and Zar'roc. He hoped they would come.
"Welcome brothers and sisters; I have called this meeting for several reasons, and for all of you to know each other's faces is but one of them. There is a wolf-like thing by the name of Arathea who roams our lands. She wishes to help this forest, and in return for giving her safe conduct she will help defend the Edge from threats." His loud voice paused for a moment, allowing news of the Warden to sink in. He didn't mind if his herd bothered her with curios questions, but if they tried to harm her or run her out... well, now they knew that she was officially approved by Mauja and hopefully they wouldn't. "There are many ranks in this herd, and they gape empty. We need Emissaries, who will work on our foreign relations and visit other herdlands, and Phantasms, who will keep guard over our own. Three times now has the Throat attempted to steal from us - myself two times, neither successful, and once they managed to take my daughter. Those who do this have been operating behind Kri's back, but it's an annoyance to us all the same. We also need more trained warriors. If you desire any rank, or even a rank tailored to your own specific purpose, speak up now, but don't talk all at once or I won't hear what you say!" And then no one will get a rank, so please be disciplined. |
