Ruske;; above all, do no harm. I had become quite an explorer, in my short time with the World’s Edge. I did wonder, however, if sometimes my interest expanded too far beyond the borders of my immediate home. I yet knew very little of the Edge… a few names and faces, nothing more. With the desire to rectify this fresh in my mind, I wandered without any direct purpose under the sharp glare of a fearsome sun. It was not, at least, so warm as it had been with my winter coat in full, but reluctant tufts remained, here and there. I caught my ribs on trees as I moved past, scraping off what agreed to go; a gentleman I had never been, but I knew how to act the part. I ought to look it, as well. My intentions, caught in frivolity as they were, had little to do with honest work. But honest work caught me, all the same. It began as a strange noise: a sort of scuffling, as of dirt being moved. Curiously, my ears twisted to follow it. A badger? No – no sharp scent. And the noise was wrong; it recalled hooves. I suspected a herd mate, rather than a beast. I was not disappointed. ”Resplendence.” I recognized the healer’s pale form immediately; my tone brightened with recognition, nearly joy. I could not call her a friend, but something – something moved happily in me, at the familiar sight. I paused a moment to think over the pitiable state of my social life as I examined her work. She had cleared a wreckage of earth and weeds – clearly some manner of construction, yet foreign to me. Quite orderly. With an absent glance at the bright glow of her feathered dragon, I cocked an ear. ”What are you up to?” Of course, the more important question lay waiting somewhere on the back of my tongue, the one felt keenly whenever I found myself in presence of those who had first revived me, on that day of my arrival: do you need my help?  |
