Excitement couldn’t be measured within confides of language. Each raspy breath of cool evening air caressed wide lungs of a beast who sought to go higher, and when goal was achieved he pushed yet higher still; into an icy diamond sky. He hadn’t flown the wind with such spur since youth, and had almost forgotten how speed could quicken a heartbeat to a point of exhilaration. Angled wings shimmered pale against the moonless night, Midas shifted body weight to catch warm uplifting drafts that would reduce the amount of pumping required for such trying flight. Flexing limbs beat the passing breeze as if to offer aid.

Heart was higher than wings could take; and for good reason, he of all creatures had just been visited by his lord and savior. Mind was set toward a path of purpose, completing his charges quest would take time and he was more than ready to get started. By mornings first light his home could be seen just ahead, approaching Dragon Throat Midas slowed and took a moment to land at a canter that quickly turned into a light trot as he crossed the border. Ivory wings stayed semi outward so that the sweat that caked his charcoal hide would dry. Chest heaved as breathing returned to a normal rate; limbs trembled not with ache or weary but excitement.

It would be wise to seek a few hours of sleep before the afternoon sun got too high. Besides—he still had much to think about and brains seemed to do better when put at ease for a few mindless hours, with a bit of reserve he took lead toward the old magnolia. Sleep was a stern master and took even the most excitable studs into its gentle talons, but Midas wouldn’t allow mind to rest easy for long. After only three or so hours of dozing he awoke and went toward the lake to quench thirst and wash the mud and grim from his smelly body. Pausing to grab a bite of breakfast he turned toward the boarders, orbs seeking out a certain mare.

Motherhood was a rewarding experience for the young mare so far. Her colt was a gangly bundle of joy that kept her smiling for hours on end. He looked a lot like the Earth God, she thought, though there were some features that reminded her of herself, namely the crooked forelegs. It left her wondering from time to time if the Earth God would fix his son's legs as he did her own or if she would have to go to him and ask him.

She had woken and left Hototo sleeping while she grazed in the early hours of the morning. It wasn't long before her son was up and at her side, nursing eagerly as he always did. She nuzzled him affectionately and continued to graze.

The sun continued to rise and Ktulu was soon leading her son toward the lake to drink. She dipped her muzzle into the water and drank deeply to satisfy the thirst the heat had caused. Once finished drinking she pawed at the water, splashing some of it onto her chest and her son to keep him cool as well.

It didn’t take long before his expected company arrived. She came like so many others during the coolness of morning to drink and refresh self before either trailing off for afternoon duties or seeking shade for a lazy day of motherhood teaching and rest. Her sleek frame came into view, still having an enticing curve at a peaking maturity. Wasting little time for rude gawking as wasn’t in his nature; he lead back down to water’s edge and followed a muddy path toward her, a soft whinny escaping to alert said company of pleasant approach. A mellow tan colt stayed near her side, soft pelt covered in baby down that was familiar for his species. Little nubby horns had yet to emerge through stubble rounded spots along the forehead.

Drawing close to them both he said politely and with light vocal, “Good morning lady Ktulu,” a smile tugged at the corners of his lips as pitless eyes lowered to fall upon the young Pegasus, “and good morning to you as well Sir, Hototo.” He wasn’t the hesitant type of man so once greeting was over with the golden stud went right to the heart of his reasoning, clearing throat he uttered, “Forgive my abrupt self,” the muscles along his wings trembled as a soft breeze trailed past, forelimb rose to paw mud from his left hoof, “I pay visit with purpose this day, if you would hear me out; my gratitude could not be measured,” Midas was sure with his choice of temporary companionship. When the father of earth had spoken of a unicorn; she had been the first to happen upon mind. Forelock fell forward and drifted across his features.

Tone softened as he visited upon the subject lacing his heart, “The lord of earth has blessed me with his presence an evening before now,” withers flexed, neck shifted to turn skull in general direction of his journey, “and took pity upon this soul to grant a request that is dear to my heart.”
