The sun had yet to show it's face to this side of the world. Nothing could hide from the red-orange glow of it's mighty force that broke through the arms of the timber trees. Upon the edge that overlooked the vast waters, she looked at the masterpiece before her. The vibrant hues stretching out across what had been indigo, black even and now dark pink. Nothing could hide from it, and it was a bit much to think about. The infinite power of the Gods, both great and terrible. Something she had mused about many day as a filly, but something she wanted to pass on today. As the sun's crown became more distinct, she drifted away from the waters, back into the start of the forest. She was growing rather fond of it's hideaways, and questions. Muzzle bent close to the mixtures of plants (indian paint, and foxtails),a single flint was picked up when a spur of flecked grey crossed her path. The skin upon her shoulders flinched, her silver eyes met round, glassy, brown pair of a rabbit. It's off-white nose twitched, and it's little tail wiggled. Her breath went to fall from her lips, tongue forming words. Before they came out there was nothing but the sway of leaves where it had fled. Was she really that scary? She was not small by rabbit's measure, but she had barely moved a single hoof. Two ears drifted down, and she tucked her mouth in a tight line. Four legged company, ones lacking floppy ears, and fluffy tails would be nice, but she had to take what she could get. She wanted to try a little experiment.

Checking the ground beneath her for sticks, and other sharp objects, she leaned away from a protruding rock, dropping to her knees. The rabbit slowly peered out from beneath the eves of shrub. It was clear it was wondering if it should fear for it's life, but the young thing was curious of the unicorn. Smile, almost visible, worked it's way upon her black lips. She did not stare directly at the fellow, but kept it in her sight. She eased her haunches to the ground, and slowly she strummed on her vocal chords, a gentle, airy tune.

"Little bunny foo foo,
hopping through the forest,
scooping up the field mice and boppin' them on the head.
Down came the good fairy and she said.
Little bunny foo foo,
I don't want to see you scooping up the field mice
and boppin' 'em on the head."

First the rabbit drew it's head back under cover, thinking soon to rapidly make it's escape. The melody flowing, the mare unmoved, slowly with each end of the beat it drew closer to the unicorn. Surely it would have eaten him by now....

The King’s black pet was sleeping in a big thicket when he was woken by the sound of a voice singing. He sleepily raised his head, blinking towards the early rays of the sun that was filtrating through the forest. He wanted to laugh at the sun, mock it for the fact that he had lost his grip on the world. But the Monster was still halfway asleep and had trouble knowing if the urge to laugh was a dream or an actual feeling.

He shook his head and as he tore himself from the warm embrace of sleep he heard the last line of the song very clearly. “I don't want to see you scooping up the field mice and boppin' 'em on the head." The words were strange and he didn’t understand them, but on the other hand - most words were strange to the black stallion. He knew a few and he learned more, but once and a while he forgot them again - mostly he just repeated words and sounds like a parrot - without knowing their meaning.

The Monster yawned and unfolded his front legs. When he got up he shook the last feeling of sleepiness from his body and sniffed the air to locate the source of the singing. He found a intoxicating scent of a mare and also the scent of the Edge. Humming the tune he’d just heard he picked his way through the forest. Yellow leaves had fallen from the trees and they rustled under his sleek hooves. He didn’t need to go far and soon he saw a dark mare on the ground. She was about his size with red mane and red highlights in her tail.

Her scent made his head spin a little, but the warm season was over so his instincts weren’t pulling on him as much as they otherwise did. Had it been the season of Birdsong the Monster would have probably just jumped on her. He had smelled the mare before - at the herdmeeting, but he hadn’t really seen her - he hadn’t really seen anyone on the herdmeeting but Snö and Mauja. It had been too many unicorns for him to notice individuals.

Curiously he leaned forward and saw a little fluffy thing in front of the dark mare. The Monster’s tangled tail whipped behind him and his muscles twitched. Then he sprang forward, jumping over the crouching mare. The rabbit bolted. A snort erupted from the Monster's nostrils as he landed just where the little animal had been. The black stallion started chasing it through the forest a happy grin twisting his unnaturally wide mouth.

The song was nothing, but a silly thing to entertain children, or in her case draw their thoughts off the hell they had and were to face. They were distant memories that played in the back of her mind like the static of something enough to know it was there, annoying and flicking. Yet, it was not her entire focus. The rabbit captivated her attention, and it retreated at least once more before drawing closer. Seeing the small creature, she could see why it was so quick, and reluctant. The mare could probably kill a swipe of her powerful front hoof. Killing the rabbit served no purpose to her. It was much more interesting alive. Things were about to change. She did not expect anyone to be listening, nor around. She had saw no one really, except in passing they kept their space and she kept hers. There was a distinct humming, a deep thrum of her little tune. The rabbit heard it, did not quite understand it was coming from someone else. Faelene did, and she cast her ears back, trying to tell where he was coming from.

Behind her. Why did stallions have to do that? She momentarily clenched her jaws, just steadying herself, her nerves, her instincts of flee or fight. He wasn't exactly hiding, trying to sneak up on her. What was his intention? She tipped her dark mask in his direction, letting her black and silver eyes take him in. He appeared like he had been cut out of the night sky, and brought down to earth. The morning light only making him appear more dark, and ominous. It was one with the dark cord around his neck that hit his broad chest, with sharp yellow eyes. Upon sight at the meeting she had decided he was nothing ordinary. He was completely unknown, and the unknown should be feared. It was probably best she did not know if the season had been different what he would have done.

As it were, she could see him staring at the rabbit, and she could see something there. Mouth parted to warn him that would not be the thing to do, she came a second late. Dark from was already threw the air, and right where the bunny had been. Flints shoved against the ground, pushing her to a stand. What was she suppose to say? Scold him? Bad dog, don't do that. Right, that would work. Light snort pressed from her nostrils at her own thoughts. She had no more time to think, with a wild grin he was taking pursuit of the harmless rabbit. It was only natural for her to chase after the onyx brute.

Since they were the same size, and she had not stood like around like an idiot trying to figure what had happened, she was hot on the Monster's heals. She did not believe he meant the rabbit no harm. Quite the opposite. She let out a short nicker, as if asking what the hell. Thundering sound of eight hooves, rumbled beneath, up, and around her was all her ears would likely hear. He probably had a lot more strength and stamina then herself, and she half assumed he could probably do this all day. Some point she would have to stop. It wasn't like she had a plan of what she would if she caught up to him, or if he stopped. This could be an interesting day.

Legs rose and fell, her eyes straining to see if he was even following the bunny. She would not know. The forest was a blur of green, orange, brown, and tones of the graying sky. What she could make out, she tried to avoid. Sharp stumps of anthills, and wonky growing bushes that were starting to die. She did not gain ground, but she was trying to hold what she did.

He crashed through thickets, bushes and smaller trees - trampled rotten stumps and anthills in his pursuit of the bunny. He had no idea what to do with it if he ever caught it, it was just a mad instinct that drove him. The mere movements of the little animal made him want to chase and chase and chase it until it stopped running. It was not the instinct of a horse, but then again the Monster was more predator than horse. He ignored branches hitting him in the face, he didn’t mind the muddy water splashing up on his legs and barrel when he ran through creeks - the only thing he cared about was to get to the bunny.

He was vaguely aware of the dark mare behind him, but when he suddenly got a whiff of her scent he lost his concentration on the bunny and the little animal turned quickly to the right and was gone in the forest. The Monster needed a few strides to stop and by then the bunny had probably found a safe hiding spot under a root or maybe in its own burrow. The black, ragged brute sniffed the ground, but he soon lost interest and turned his attention to the mare. He cocked his head to the side, looking at her with eyes that were open and, in a sense, soulless. It was easy to see that the beast’s intelligence had quite the limit and that his understanding of the world was somewhat flawed.

He took a few steps towards the mare, sniffed her at the base of her neck and the without warning he pivoted around and started plowing through the forest again. He’d seen a bird in the corner of his eye and was now chasing it - head turned to the sky and legs carelessly working under him. The black rope dragged over the ground, dashing between his front legs in a sort of foreboding dance - it would only be a matter of time before he stepped on it and fell.

The beast then exploded out of the forest and into the clearing where they’d had the herdmeeting. He was still watching the bird, but in the middle of the clearing it happened - the rope got stuck under his left hind hoof and the tug of the loop around his neck was so violent that it tore the skin of his withers. He fell, face first, to the ground. Much like he had done at the herdmeeting. Then came his hindquarters and he tipped over and he tumbled around - ending up sitting on his haunches - face, withers and back hurting quite a bit.

What dove the dark brute on she would not understand, and she would not try to comprehend. In fact she would almost believe he was something besides a unicorn. Something in unicorn's clothing. Suspicions were not anything weighty, just thoughts she had. All while she tried to pursue the four legged beast that smashed it's way though anything and everything like it wasn't there. Unlike him, she felt the trees scraping at her knees, wild branches digging against her hocks, and caught a sticky spider web to her fuzzy nose. A snort, she half rubbed it while trying to continue her chase. Soon she was bobbing through creeks knowing she would be more brown then black. Getting dirty did not bother her, it actually felt good, water dripping against her limbs, and barrel. She urged her limbs faster, climbing up the the miniature bank.

It did not take too long to regain ground upon the living shadow. Once she caught up, he soon came to a halt. She quickly slid to a stop of her own, just in time to see the bunny flee out of the corner of her eye. He was so close to spotting the floppy eared thing, when suddenly he was looking at her. She was caught by two bright colored eyes of molten lava. They may be staying at her, but they almost seemed to be looking through her.

Muscles coiled beneath he charcoal pelt as he came close. He merely took in her scent, before shooting off for hell knows what. She was tempted to let the chase end there. What else did she have to do? She was not naive to believe he was harmless, but she was curious, bored, and possibly lonely. Without more thought or question as to what was too happen she followed his trail once again. This time she had a faint clue where she was headed; place Mauja had called them.

She weaved her way through the trees, the sky breaking blue with the rising sun even higher. She saw the black stallion, head in the clouds, long coil whipping around his front pillars. She could see it wasn't going to end well. She hurriedly rushed forward. "Stop!" She cried, but it was too late. He flew into the open field, and it was not too long she heard the thud of flesh meeting hard earth. A wince, she trotted out into the grassy plain to see the giant dog. Skin was torn where his collar had been, she could see that from a distance. She eased herself into a walk, cautiously approaching. Silver irises wanted to take a closer look at his wounds, she wasn't quite ready to break the space."Ouch," she offered in a soft tone, as if she were speaking to a wounded critter she was trying to coax.

With Monster running around the forest, more than likely following her father around, Snö had taken to wandering with the metal wolf that Ulrik had given to her. He said that it didn't have feelings, but it would know that she was its master. Still, the filly had given it a name. Tarak. He was her protector, just like Monster was when he graced her with his company. As strange as he was she found comfort in the great black beast that most others didn't. He was playful with her and almost calm. He had his moments where he would suddenly run off and she would chase after him, but those instances were becoming fewer.

Snö paused at the sound of thundering hooves. There were too many beats for it to be only one horse running through the forest. She looked down at Tarak, one of her ears laying back. The metal wolf only looked back lifelessly at her. Her curiosity spurred her into moving again to find out who it was. She knew who she hoped it was.

The filly moved into a smooth trot, her hoof falls being drowned out by the mechanical steps of Tarak who ran next to her. Soon she found herself at the clearing where the herd had gathered not too long ago and there, on the ground again, was monster. Beside him was some mare that Snö had never seen before. The usual jealousness plagued her as the mare got close and began to expect Monster.

"Thais!" She called to get the black stallion's attention before walking toward him. As she got closer she spared the black mare little more than a passing glance. "How many times do I have to tell you to be careful?" She asked, gently nudging his shoulder. She then eyed the tengill, as her father called it, that was tied around the stallion's neck and wondered if there was a way to remove it.

For a while the beast just sat there, seemingly trying to understand what had happened. Then he shook his head and turned it towards the mare with the red mane. He’d stored her scent now in his memory and would never forget it, but for the moment he’d only labeled her “Edge member” without any more personal thoughts of her. Maybe with time he could rename her scent as “friend”, but for now she was just someone with the scent of those he wasn’t supposed to attack. It was the first thing Mauja had taught him and after that lesson the first one he’d met with that scent was Snö and her scent was now labeled with feelings the Monster couldn’t even explain. She was very precious to him and when he didn’t follow her father around it was Snö who he trailed after.

Suddenly the Monster’s ears pricked up as he heard the name the girl had given him. Thais. he didn’t know what it meant, but he connected it with her wanting his attention. And there she came… with a strange creature which kind he’d seen only once before. The black beast’s ears fell back on his neck and his red and yellow eyes rolled when he watched the machine. If it hadn’t been for the fact that he’d seen Ulrik’s mechanical wolf at the herdmeeting, the Monster had probably freaked and attacked the machine at Snö’s side. It was very strange to him, the metal wolf and it had no normal smell he could store, besides the scent it did have made his nose burn. He didn’t like it, but since it seemed to belong to Snö he guessed he had to tolerate it.

When Snö had touched his shoulder he stood up. The rays of the sun illuminated his dirty and scruffy coat, but the Monster didn’t care about that. He turned to Faelene and smiled. He bumped his nose against the point of her shoulder and then he looked to Snö as if to say: “Look what I found!” He froze suddenly, seeming to remember something and then he started humming the tune that the dark mare had been singing. He giddily walked in a circle around her and then he stopped again, looking from the grown mare to the young filly.

There was no hint what she said nor did mattered, but she hadn't been expecting much. He was in a world all his own, and she was probably more of a spectator than a participant. Really, she couldn't exactly heal him, and had a feeling he probably would not hold still for such things. She hung close, watching him merely because she had nothing else to do. And it seemed a better idea not to take off, with him chasing her instead of a something else. A quiet exhale, she contemplated her options when suddenly a girl's voice broke against the quiet. "Thais!" Triangle points flickered upward, her black and gray eyes being met with a flash of white accompanied by walking, metal canine. It must be the her guard. She thought, captured by it's movements, how it could even work. She had never really seen machinery before, and it allured her. It's white eyes stared on, as it followed the princess to their little gathering.

She wasn't dense enough not notice how invisible she was to Snö, but she did not let it bother her. She was after all with her friend, and girls did not share well even as they aged. She let her charcoal irises drift to the black beast instead. He,on the other hand, was elated when he saw the white lass. Least this was how Faelene described it, when he climbed back to a stand, something changed by the touch of a youngling. Snowy princess spoke to him, like a mother to child. Curiously her gaze shifted to the filly, and Faelene noticed what Snö was staring at, the cord, and she briefly wondered if they had the same thought. It needed to come off. The mare did not say a word. She was ready to be invisible to beast too, and left behind.

Instead she was pleasantly surprised as he smiled, flicking the round of her shoulder with his wide mouth. A half smile formed on her dark lips, eyes exchanging from pair of molten lava to blue. There was no malice, least not yet in her look to the princess. It was more of a way to try to gauge her reaction to all of this.

Funny enough Monster drifted around, starting to hum her silly song, and she chuckled at how well it glided from his vocals. The lady's half smile turned into a grin, and she hummed it back to the stallion.
