“Careful,” the guard rumbles, “wouldn’t want to burn yourself.” Flames leap higher much too close for your liking, and you scramble upward and back, horrified at the thought of such disfigurement. It is only when you are a safe distance away that a flash of magenta catches your eye. Ah, so Pinkie has found her way here as well, it seems. You watch her out of the corner of your eye, wondering if she has grown bored with her precious wandering yet. Perhaps after this flaming stallion takes his leave, you’ll take it upon yourself to ask.

The fiery figure is speaking again, and this time, what he has to say is of interest. It seems he has something to give, an idea that immediately captures your attention. You don’t know what you have to do to distinguish yourself from all of the others, but whoever this mysterious benefactor is, he soon makes clear his terms: you are to bring him water from the mirage for the golden flowers at his feet. Two feelings immediately overwhelm you, disappointment and confusion. The disappointment is at the illusion of the water—any second now, you’re going to collapse from dehydration, and now who knows where the nearest creek is? Your dry tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth in protest. As for the confusion, well, that’s a given. Fire-mane here has just given you an impossible task, probably just for the fun of watching you all run like ants in a thunderstorm. Already, hooves are shuffling around you, and you snort in irritation as stray beams of light from the more ambitious projects (conjured up in mere moments by magic, you notice bitterly) strike you in the eye. You get a faint glimmer of amusement at Pinkie, angling her body along with the rest of them—ridiculous.

However, it won’t do to get left behind. You pore over the stranger’s riddle, repeating it over and over in your mind: Bring me water…water…water… The thought of water keeps distracting you though. How are you supposed to think if you’re this parch—wait. Your eyes land on the flowers before you, large and gold. Their hollow centers are filled with dew. Warily, you creep up to the nearest blossom, keeping as far away from the flaming one as possible, lest he burn you. Velvet lips reach for the perfect teacup, yearning for the water within.

You are a fraction of an inch away when the thought strikes you, and you laugh aloud. The stranger’s request seems rather humorous when you realize that the flowers already have the water that they need, cupped in their own centers. As for the mirage bit, you figure that all a mirage is is heat. Is this stallion not heat incarnate, and did these flowers not come from him? Typical male, he gave you a task that he had already completed himself, then sat back to watch the fun as you all scratched your heads. Begrudgingly, you have to admit to yourself that it is rather clever. But water he wants, and water he shall get. Gingerly, you pluck the flower and sprinkle the dew on its neighbor: water from the mirage indeed. In fact, you wouldn’t be surprised if this all was an illusion—most of it seems too fantastic to be real.

[Summary: Sheba sees mirages as heat and the sun god as heat incarnate. Since the flowers came from the god and his heat, she figures that the dew from the flowers is effectively water from a mirage. This is what she sprinkles on the plants.]
