Lace

It was early morning by the time they reached the Falls. Lace hadn't been in any particular hurry to get away from the Heavenly Fields but the sudden upswing of horses that crowded the high altitudes made both him and his dragon uneasy, so after the run-in with the Sun God they slipped away quietly and descended the steep path. Maybe they should have let Tandavi and Natraj know that they had left - Lace was reluctant to worry the girl more than he already had, and he was still keen to have a proper conversation with her about things - but between the crowd and his own restless nature it was straining to stay in one place. Besides... he'd seen something from the elevated meadow that piqued his curiosity, and he was eager to get closer to find out more.

Last time he had passed by here, there had been mountains towering up to the southwest. Tall, solid and very immobile mountains, that ought to have been there still. Yet for some reason the snow-capped peaks were nowhere to be found, and Lace couldn't understand what had happened to them. As he padded cautiously around the area he couldn't keep his eyes from straying towards the place where the mountains had been, the area now swept in a thick mist that gleamed pearly white in the crisp morning light. It looked as though a giant had reached down and scooped the very rock away, leaving either flat ground with nothing at all growing there, or a pit of some kind - the mist made it hard to tell, and he was reluctant to get too close in case it was the latter.

For the life of him the gold-backed stallion couldn't find a path to follow, and the view from above that his dragon shared through their bond showed only a vast sea of fog that never parted long enough to reveal the ground beneath. As the sun rose it would probably burn away, answering the steadily rising number of questions in his mind... But for now he could only shake his head, perplexed.

"Mountains don't just uproot themselves and disappeared" he said to Fajira as she came back and settled on his rump, as always balancing skillfully with wings stretched wide as he kept skirting the misty area. "I wonder what happened here..."

There was some days she should actually do work, and today was one of those days. With a mental kick in the arse I forced mein puppe to actually get up and start to move. The sun was barely rising, offering plenty of protection for Seele's frame to meld into the shadows and mists of the Falls which was so much her home now. Tired limbs edged their way towards the hidden entrance and down the steps. Her ears listening to the roar of the Falls that reverberated around in this tower of slippery stairs and tunnels.

When she finally reached the bottom of the spiraling entrance she allowed her body to curl around emerge from the falls - taking a thin passage way that would only cover her in mist rather than completely drenching her frame. And, as she emerged her yellow orbs lingered on the stallion with the gold spread across his back. Swift eyes took in his build, the way that he seemed to be quite a bit taller than her, and then the way the white dragon perched itself upon his back. What does he want? I was not excited about the fact which she had to actually communicate with someone else. I had really just wanted her to train more - but, alas, if we didn't have the members then she did not have one to train with so I would deal if only for the moment.

So, she moves in closer - finally pulling out of the shroud which the mist allowed her frame to hide in and still successfully hiding the entrance since it hid the entire lower portion of the mountains. "What brings the you here?" she questions, a sweet lull to her voice that gave the allusion of curiosity. Better to be sweet and curt than to act as though he were an intruder. Because, after all, one did not want to start a war off of the way a few words were said.

If he didn't know better he could have sworn that she took shape from the very mist itself. The way she appeared, as quietly and stealthily as a shadow reminded him of a black mare he knew, a dragon with a heart of gold whose mere memory still made him ache with longing. As always the stallion jumped slightly as he found himself with company, and as he had done so often in the past - a past that seemed much more distant than it really ought to be - he clipped the hears in the vague irritation and exasperation of a soldier who really should have known that someone was approaching.

"Curiosity", he replied and paused in his step, amber gaze regarding the pale-faced mare with mingled wariness and curiosity. She seemed familiar, but he couldn't quite place her... If they had met before he couldn't quite remember the circumstances. "As I recall there used to be some mountains here... I find it curious that they uprooted themselves and left." A smile ghosted across his cob-webbed features, the dragon stretching out lazily along the gold-dusted spine and yawned. "Perhaps you know more about the matter?"

Perhaps he should feel more nervous about being where he was. It didn't take a genius to notice the unmistakable traces of hooves and the heady scent of horse that lingered in the air, marking the border of a territory. He had only ever set foot in the old Foothills once in the past, but the region must still be inhabited - the appearance of this mare was evidence as good as any of that. Technically that meant that he was intruding, but the notion didn't overly affect the old stallion. He knew better than to try and cross a border when he had no business with the herd, and as long as he kept his nose away from touchy subjects he should be fine.

If not... well, he was used to running by now.

Sweet minds do not exist in this frame. Or, I guess they do - I just generally try and keep the two of them mute. I huff as she pulls up near him, wasting the time which could be spent searching for information, training, or keeping up with the way this herd was swaying in the breeze. Perhaps she could have even gone off to recruit more members. But, no. She had to stay here and talk to this random stag who had shown up at our doorstop.

Better safe than sorry, Innerste chided to me as I sat there pouting in her head about the far more productive things she could be accomplishing. But, alas, we were in the situation now so we would have to stay there. His answer of curiosity had a familiar phrase tsking in her skull (for curiosity kills the cat), but she doesn't dare to say it out loud. "There were then the darkness spread - which I'm sure you have to know about had you know these past mountains. The Earth God deemed it unfit and crafted this home for us from the remains of the lands." The smile that just barely registered across his face was not returned, for Seele knew hers was far more forced, uncertainly deterring. "Might I ask your name? It is not every day we have new creatures linger at the borders," and, should he give his name she will offer hers in return. It was fair - after all.

Her words surprised him. Not because it was the Earth God who had caused the change - that made sense in a way, for who else would have the strength to level a mountain? - but rather that he had done it. For all that the gods of Helovia were more active in their appearances compared to other deities he'd heard rumors of, they still didn't often touch the very structures of the land. Last time must have been when they abandoned their shrines, if he wasn't entirely mistaken, and that had been only a minor change to small structures, never mind that they had been important structures. It made Lace wonder what the plague had been, exactly, for Father Earth to react so forcefully just to restore balance. Had he been forced to because the root of the evil had come from here? Or was it just an action in passing, an afterthought since the rest of the world slowly cleansed itself?

A faint shudder passed through the steed as these thoughts and questions coursed through his mind, and it was with some effort he pushed them aside. He could drive himself crazy trying to understand the actions of the gods, this wasn't the first time he found himself brooding over matters that frankly didn't concern him.
"Indeed, I've lived in Helovia for several years now" he mumbled absently, the look in his eyes distant even as he returned them to the bay lady. "Never spent much time in the Foothills though... What do you call this place now?"

But then his attention was brought back fully by her question and a slight nip of pale claws against his shoulders. He threw Fajira a slightly annoyed glance before answering, voice hesitating ever so slightly before offering his old title.
"Pardon my rudeness, of course you may" he said. "My name is Lace... Silverthorn. I had the honor of leading the Qian at World's Edge for a time, before the plague. My company is Fajira, the White. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, lady...?" He bowed his head before letting the voice trail off in a query, curious golden eyes peering up through a pale fringe to gaze expectantly at his host.

quote quote quote

They had been heading out to collect herbs for the growing garden when she heard a voice. A voice that now seemed like a distant memory. It brought the young roan back to a time when the now fading scars on her rear were fresh, and the Qian had taken over the World's Edge. Back before she had been forced twice to carry unwanted foals. Back even before Keiran had become her's and she become his. When the roan was young and fairly innocent to the world around her.

In her place was a no longer innocent, more seasoned mare. Both bonded and mother of four, even if one was dead and another adopted. Long forgotten is her original intent of collecting herbs. In leaps and bounds she and her bonded covered the last few yards, drawing up close to her leader. "Lace, you're alive. I feared you among the missing or..... I never saw you in the caves.." She could only hope he remembered her, after all it was so long ago. Keiran hung back behind his bonded. It seemed this was one of the few stallions the roan trusted. If she trusted him, maybe he was okay.

She longed to prance like the young mare she had been when they officially had met. He had created the WingLeader's armor, and surrounded by several other mares. He had welcomed her home then, was it now her turn to do that same? Of course he would be welcome here, among the Falls. So much had shifted and changed since they first met.... Would he even remember her name?

My eyes registered the shudder that looped through his frame. Apparently something about the Gods actually doing something to fix the Earth did not bode well with him. But as he spoke he enlightened Seele and I on parts of his past. A nod of her head was offered as he said he had lived here for a few years though never spent much time in the Foothills. "Hidden Falls," she said meeting his distant gaze which did little to make me less suspicious of the stag who stood so close to our doorstep.

Alas, as she asked his name he finally seemed to return to the land of the living - which was good for Seele did not wish to pull his soul to force him back into this realm. He gave his name, what his position had been before the darkness, and then his companion's name. There was a bow of his head, trailing off as he awaited her name with his orbs peering up toward her. "Seele, the Necromancer," she offered with a gentle nod of her head before her audits flickered back at the sound of more hooves.

Well, hooves and paws that is. For, as she listened, the sound of padding feet caught her attention. Yellow eyes peered for the source and soon saw the frame of Kiara. "Kiara," she murmured, dropping her head down and attempting to press her side up against that of the even smaller mare beside her. It was an attempt at a form of support for her Earth Medic, though she was not necessarily one to always be the most… caring in appearances and actions, she was trying now.

There is a light pause in her gaze as she looks back toward Lace. "I would assume you are no longer the leader of the Edge. Where do you reside now?" she inquired - hoping not only to quell her concerns of why he was here, but to offer some kind of solace for the appaloosa mare beside her who seemed to have cared so deeply for the stag before her…

"Seele" he repeated with a nod of appreciation and raised the neck, again with the odd sensation of having heard that name before. Perhaps they really had come across one another in the past, but whatever meeting it might have been apparently hadn't been of enough importance to make him remember. He made sure to store it away so that it wouldn't be forgotten this time around however, and spared her a friendly sort of smile before the sound of hooves announced the presence of another, thus drawing his attention away.

"Kiara!" he exclaimed upon seeing the little roan emerge upon the path and took a step forward to extend his nose in warm greeting. Of course he remembered her. They had never spoken much, yet her presence had not been lost on the grullo during herd meetings and gatherings. He confessed himself rather fond of her soft spoken nature, though wouldn't go so far as to claim he knew her. "You look well dear, I'm glad to see you have found a place for yourself." The honeyed gaze was warm as he looked between the mares, noting the apparent closeness between them without realizing the reason for it.

It was indeed a relief to see that his old family members were doing well without him around. It eased the burden of guilt he carried for leaving them to fend for themselves, made it easier to let go of the past. There was so much he ought to have said and done that never happened, and if he had any vice it was this tendency to hold on to his own failures until they died from old age and began to rot.

"Indeed, the Edge is safely in the hands of Kahlua and Kaj these days" he nodded as Seele once again spoke up. Lace answered her quite readily, seeing no reason not to be truthful about his circumstances. He could have smiled as he thought himself notice the careful phrasings of the white-patched lady's words, the hidden question beneath it - but he curbed any invitations before she would think to utter them.

"For the time being I don't affiliate with any herds or groups" he admitted with a light smile and casual cock of the hips. "I'm still recuperating from an illness, so I find it calmer to simply roam with the wind and take the day as it comes. Today I was hoping to explore this part of the lands, should I receive permission from the leaders of the herd."

Again he asked his question with a glance, quietly inquiring if she knew who they were. Perhaps her by-name should have told him who she was, but with the influx of heroes and legends from lands far and wide it would be rude to make assumptions - just look at himself, a king of sand and wastelands and leader of nothing but his own tail.

He speaks, words carefully picked just like hers were. I had to give him something for not being overly idiotic. After all, we had come across quite a few of those in our time. He gives the names of the leaders before carefully adding on that he was choosing not to affiliate with anyone. Perhaps it was a wise choice, perhaps it wasn't. One couldn't know until it was a little bit too late.

But, then he was wondering if he could get a tour of these lands. There was a gentle nod of her head. "You may rest here. I am the Czarina, however I must insist you stay with an escort - the lands are quite... treacherous for those who don't know the footing," she explains, shifting her weight. Perhaps it was also to be sure that he didn't fully know what they held since he could spread it anywhere he wished. But, really, she was also one to ensure that those near her who needed rest at least got the chance to recuperate without being judged. Then, there was also the tiny thing of having the members attack him just because he wasn't one of them. It had happened and she would prefer to not deal with such messes again. A gentle smile pulled at her lips, one which was very difficult for her to maintain and so she dared to drop it. "Come, let's get you some water," she says before turning tail and heading back towards the shadows and up the stairs. She only waited a few seconds before continuing on and stopping at the patch of open land surrounded almost completely by lakes. Time to relax, my dears. I won't let it stay for long.

He bowed courteously, not too surprised at finding he stood before the leading mare of the herd. It almost always seemed to be that way; either the guards came to inquire about the trespassers, or someone of rank did. Some things were unlikely to change regardless of herd, country, religion or culture.

"Thank you, for your hospitality Czarina Seele. Of course, I have no objections; it is only as it should be" he assured when told he would receive an escort. If she hadn't given him one it was more than likely that he would have questioned it in his mind; personally he would have been unlikely to allow tourists within the borders at all, never mind letting them walk freely without anyone to keep their eyes on them. This herd might be young but the leaders seemed competent; Lace felt content as he walked after the white-painted lady, smiling at Kiara as he did so while wondering if she would come as well.

Making sure to place his feet only where his host had stepped, the heavily marked stallion looked around in curiosity as they ventured deeper into the herdland. He had only ever visited the outskirts of the Foothills while they still stood, and this landscape was very different indeed. Still rocky and difficult to navigate, the rush of waterfalls and hanging mist of rainbow-inducing spray made it seem infinitely different, more lush and vibrant than he remembered. As he followed Seele out onto the patch he found a wide smile begin to spread across the face, much more open and genuine than the polite face he'd worn so far.

"I would have expected no less from the patronage of the Earth God" he murmured in subdued awe and looked out over the landscape, eyes greedily taking in every newborn feature - there was so much to see, so much beauty to take in. "It truly is a wonderful place - I'd say you're very lucky to be able to call this home." He smiled widely at the horned mare, feeling all the more grateful now to have been allowed to stay, if only for a while; he'd have missed out on so much if she hadn't said yes.

Kiara had accepted the touch of her leader. A bit surprised by the affection but happy to accept it. She remained quiet as the two talked. She could only smile as Lace admitted that he called no where home... But her slight hope was crushed almost at once as he admitted he wanted to stay that way for the time being. Keiran purred slightly in her mind He is happy and healthy. What more could you ask for? Kiara agreed. At least if her friend would not join her here in the Falls, he was alright. What more could the roan truly ask for?

As they began to move off to get some water, Kiara found herself tagging along. While they walked, she decided now would be the best time to try and catch up some. "I wanted a fresh start, after the darkness. So I followed a few others that were heading in a different direction and ended up here. They made me the Earth Medic. I don't know why... Other's had personal magic to heal... I'm still trying to gain mine..." Her voice quivered a moment, the reasoning behind her want for the magic had been Breeze. So that she could heal him if he fought, but that she could also heal other members of the herd. Technically she was able to do that now, with the rank she held came magic too.

The wind played gently with her cream locks, twirling the feather of the God of the Earth's that was in her mane. Perhaps she had alwas belonged here in the Falls.... Even if it had not always been the Falls. She seemed to find favor like she had never found before. Life was okay, not great, but okay at least.
