Depthless, dark blue eyes glanced down at the painted white rectangle which lay by the feet of the turtle he had so boyishly followed. They stood at the base of a towering mountain whose peak lay hidden beneath a collar of snow white cloud, and before Kari’s sceptical gaze came again, at last, to rest upon the overwhelmingly cheerful expression of the shelled creature before him, he assessed the monstrosity suspiciously.

In there...? he questioned silently, lips twisting to the side as his lowered his small tapering nose to investigate. The shape looked harmless enough, but Kari was all too aware of life’s uncanny desire to throw curve-balls his way; disguised often as women, mothers who cared enough to butter him up and dump him in the next forest passed, and more often visions to curse his memory and confuse his path. Tiny nostrils snorted apprehensively, but he could no more quell his childish interest, than scale the jagged face of the mountain with his weak wings. One cloven hoof reached towards the gravelly grass within the lines, and the other followed quickly, perhaps more recklessly minded than his hesitant brother.

There were many gathered around, unusual folk that Kari hadn’t one hope of recognizing as Unicorns of Helovia. Although they were far shorter (than even he!), shaggily clad and bleating like the helpless babes of his own kind, the scrawny colt felt a strange affiliation with them. Each goat bore a split hoof much like his own, they were small, and the majority wielded fine curled horns upon narrow brows. Even if Kari’s own horns were brittle and broken, he still felt very much like that was a significant thing they shared in common.

Standing with all four-feet in the turtle’s simple box, the grey colt peered at them. It was strange, they seemed so much bigger suddenly, so much nearer to his... and the ground seemed to have risen. As he stepped out, believing innocently that the game had been quite pointless; he turned to smile at the Earth Turtle, ever cautious and all the more uncertain. He was enormous! Kari could not have fled faster into the crowd, sparing no time for second glances, and even as his slate grey form sank into the sea of like bodies, he knew not how he had been transformed.

READY.SET.GO! The turtle cried behind him.

The swarm of murmuring bodies began at once to writhe, to lunge forward towards the sheer rocky cliff face that bore no sign of common passage. He couldn’t help but follow, realising all at once that the race the turtle had been singing about was this, this churning mass of goats! Without thinking, Kari flung himself up to a boulder jutting from the mountainside. He was instantly intrigued by this strange athleticism- something he had certainly never prided himself on before. Bodies hurled upwards around him, and he followed smugly, entertained; an unnatural competitiveness creeping through his mind.

Up ...his thoughts began to chant all at once, Up and... Up! as his little knobbly legs fought the pull of gravity. He glanced down curiously behind him and the turtle was barely a smear of green below. When blue eyes turned back to the task, they flung apart suddenly, and his nimble new body lurched with a start to the side and quite nearly off the small platform he had paused upon. "FIRE!" he shrieked, watching the heels that had sparked the blaze vanish up ahead. Kari bucked and twirled through the wind as it roared by, feeding the hungry flames as they singed his feathery legs and blazed all the brighter, all the hotter... "My LEGS are hairy!" he continued, his voice shrill with alarm; perhaps shifting priority inappropriately given his situation.

He turned, blowing and blowing at the flames as they grew and climbed still higher up his leg, "Get back, you!"He leapt away, upwards, and stopped again to harry the fire’s advance.

Kari was set alight by Aithniel’s sparking hooves
