He didn't answer the spotted girl, just gave her a glance from the corner of the eye and a quick wink that suggested she wait and see. Truth be told he wasn't sure himself; sometimes people were more willing to be pulled along than pushed, and other times nothing one said would help. Recruitment was an art form, it required certain people skills that just as often demanded the ability to be quiet and listen as a skilled tongue; and, in most cases, one had to be lucky.
This time, it seemed, his little ploy really did pan out. Lace exchanged a grin with Rei as he picked up on heavy footfalls approaching from behind, breathed a quiet sigh of relief that he'd saved face with the slack-jawed girl, and as Chisel caught up he extended the somewhat mischievous smile to the stallion as well. It didn't bother him that the other had seen through his scheme; on the contrary, it hinted towards a good head on those broad shoulders and the grullo truly appreciated that. Few things were so annoying as someone who had the potential strength and skill to make a difference but were too dumb to make use of them.
"Glad to see you're interested in continuing the chat" he chuckled, feeling the spirits rising in hope. "Of course we will tell you, whatever you wish to know." He altered the course ever so slightly so that they began moving on a more direct path towards the south, meant to bring them through the outskirts of the Deep Forest before crossing Thistle Meadow and passing by the Heart. As they walked he kept looking between the companions, quietly surprised at how good it felt to travel in the company of others; apart from Fajira his roaming was usually carried out in solitude.
"Rei does" he answered as a question was posed and gestured with the nose to the winged mare. "I'm staying there for the time being while helping out with a few things. It's a nice place in general; it sits on the southern coast on a small peninsula, surrounded by ocean on three sides and connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of earth. The climate is quite dry, the summers get really hot and you get some sandstorms from time to time... There's an oasis in the center of the isle though, so there's plenty of food and water to come by."
"As for the herd..." He glanced at Rei, wondering how long she had been a part of the Throat and how much she knew of its history. "I know it used to be one of the biggest herds in Helovia, with numbers touching on the thirties at its prime. They allied primarily with one of the other herdlands called the World's Edge, and as far as I know that allegiance still holds... There's been a bout of plague afflicting all of Helovia recently though, and after it passed there's been a lot of shuffling and reorganization among the herds; I don't know as much about things as I used to do."
"Maybe you know more, Rei?" he asked and looked at her, interested himself in hearing of the current politics - providing that she had been keeping up with things, that is.
