Please, will you place the spare feathers in my bag? She asked Silas in silence, gentle gaze dancing back to find the zephyr still perched with partly spread wings upon her back. He pulled one free from his talons, sliding from her skin towards the snow where he proceeded to place her token, and then fluttered upwards to stash the rest loosely (so as not to crush them), in the satchel by her left elbow. When they were put away, the bird came to rest once more on her back and a warming breeze caressed her quivering hide.
She stepped forward, finding the centre of the group and lay her feather down in the snow. “Perhaps so we don’t lose track of our own feather, come and stand beside me in the order which they are set down. The shortest feather will be the winner,” Africa suggested quietly, watching them, cast in the wavering light of the watching orb. She drew a breath, excitement bubbling through her mind – even if only to find out which of them had picked the smallest of the flight feathers taken.
