SHEBA

Your eyes narrow at the mare’s brash response, but you hold your tongue for the time being. The others have suggestions, surely, and it won’t do to pick a fight—the world is a much harsher place to those who are not young and beautiful, you think bitterly. Let the mare think she has won. You’ll see who gets the prize in the end.

Many others offer suggestions, and you observe without another word. Really, will it make a difference as to what you all decide? You wonder. As you’ve learned the hard way, magic is a tricky thing, and you don’t quite trust that this glowing ball will abide by the group decree anyway. When the one-winged mare offers her feathers, you choose yours silently. It is glossy and beautiful; in another time, such a gift would have thrilled you, but you seem to have lost your taste for pretty things. You nibble on the end, biting down rather hard and bending the shaft. Oh, let’s do hope she doesn’t break it! you mock in your head, imagining the horrified faces of the do-gooders who are all, at present, practically swooning over their own feathers. As it turns out, the shaft is fractured when you spit it out, and you eye it with disgust…until you get an idea.

While the others tell stories (some other silly idea—you’ll keep your secrets to yourself, thank you), you work quietly at the feather, hiding in the back of the group. Shortest feather wins, does it? You’ll give them a sort feather all right!

When the time comes to lay down the feathers side by side, you place yours on the ground with a triumphant smile. The end is neatly severed, and you have pulled off some of the soft bit of the feather so that nothing looks amiss at first glance. Perhaps your feather was, in fact, the shortest, but it never hurts to nudge fate along, does it?

Needless to say, when a feather that’s decidedly not your own is announced the shortest, your anger is instantaneous.

Summary: Sheba doesn’t challenge Cirrus; instead she takes one of Africa’s feathers and nibbles off the end to make it appear shorter than it actually is. Exasperated, she also decides not to share a story.
