Disappointing his mother always felt like a sharp blow. He knew his answer hadn’t been what she was looking for but how could he pretend that he didn’t care that this mare was dead? How could she continue to act as though it didn’t matter? She was there, after all. She had showed up and certainly that was something. They all had. But if she couldn’t see that, well, Mesec didn’t believe there was any force in any dimension that could make his mother change her opinion on something.

He hated disagreeing with her, hated it more than the gentle voice she used to mock him. Why did it feel like he was suddenly sliding backwards? Perhaps some day the two of them could get through a conversation without her brow furrowing in that manner. But then, what would he be like on that day? Still himself? Or a creature of pure shadow and darkness?

A sheepish expression took over as she dismissed the only clue available to them - the unremarkable black fur - and he had to admit she did have a point. It wasn’t as though there was a shortage of animals in Helovia with black hair (he was among them). But this dismissal left them with nothing.

But then, in the way only his mother could, she turned her harsh views around and presented him with a gift. A small smile tugged at the corners of the moon child’s mouth as she raised her wing, casting him with the shimmer of stars and he could feel it - the new magic. It was a powerful one, different than the shadow-magic he was used to, and he marvelled for a moment in the possibilities that it presented. She was giving him this so that he could find her murderer.

Perhaps she cared a little more than she led on.

He would not propose that suggestion out loud for anything in this world or the next, however, and instead his expression was one solely of awe and gratitude as the starlight surrounding him began to fade away. “Thank you, mother." It was incredible, that gift.

A pause, and the sheepish expression returned - only this time with a glint of mischief because he was dimly aware that he might be asking the wrong question. "You wouldn't happen to know where to start the search, would you? If not with the fur..."
