A crisp breeze enticed leaves from their branches, sending them whirling to the forest floor. Beneath the hazed blue sky, a roaned mare meandered through the wood. Without much purpose, except to maybe get a loose grasp on her bearings. The fiery dame knew she had ended up in a place she had never been before, but it was to be expected. She had been fairly nomadic for the last few years. The only home she'd had once had not been much of a home - it was too full of arrogance and greed to be a good place for a filly. For some reason, being raised by such bull-headed creatures had left her with some decent values. She had even known enough to leave, to go out on her own and see things through her own eyes, unclouded by the opinions and biases of others. Unfortunately, a cold disdain was almost constant in those eyes.

The ivory splashed vixen slipped into a slow canter through the forest's maze. Her agile form lept over fallen logs and careened around tree roots. Dark hooves even kicked up in a carefree manner as she came into a small clearing. She slowed back into a walk and stepped through the small area. Short, sickly grasses poked through the soil, along with pale mosses and lichens. Sorcha's rose hued maw dipped down to the plants, taking in the clear scents of past activity. Smiling slightly, she wondered if she was trespassing. "Hello?" Light, feminine tones rang out. They were much too feminine to come from her hardened soul, and yet they did. She knew her solace wouldn't last for long. 'Might as well find out who's lurking around here, anyway'. The thorned doe thought to herself, lacking the sense of trepidation that most would have while alone in a strange place. One day, her fearlessness would probably get knocked away, but for now, her mind was fairly set in it's ways.

The voice reached out into the air and was carried along by the breeze, echoing between the trees until it dissipates entirely. For a long while only silence replied to her; only the wind in the leaves and the chatter of birds and rodents in the trees served to break the quietness of the day. Then suddenly the snap of branches resound to her right, and along with a gust of wind comes a sharp scent of animal, musky and thick. Something approaches. The foliage of the ground is pushed around accompanied by much noise, leaves tremble and shiver. And for a moment, silence.

Then suddenly in a flurry of motion, something large and brown comes charging towards the newcomer from the side, in height with her hind legs. A rumbling growl sends the birds flying, away from the charging brown bear that the unicorn somehow seem to have managed to aggravate.

For a moment, Sorcha's burgundy marked form stood in the clearing, lazily waiting for a reply to her call. The thinning canopy of foliage arced above her, and the wood was relaxed and safe. But like many things in life, that would not last. The universe just had a way of playing the most interesting games.

Within another brief moment, the mare's confident foundation took a major blow. A rush of dangerous noise; snapping wood, fleeing animals, and a final greeting snarl. The girl's porcelain eyes caught the form of the predator running right at her. There was no time to run or think about what to do, only precious seconds until the beast would meet her flesh. The aggressor was no equine - that she would have been better prepared for. No, this adversary was something that seemed to literally want to consume her. The foreign feeling of shock tried to envelope her, threatening to leave her paralyzed in the carnivore's path. Whether if it was fighting experience or pure will to live that caused her to act, she'd never know. The fae swung her red and white hindquarters towards the attacker in an effort to protect her more vulnerable parts. As her haunches spun towards the bear, she threw her back hooves up, hoping to slam them into whatever part of the creature she could. Something akin to a roar emanated from her tensed throat. It had no words to it, just the blended tones of fear and wild rage. 'You will not take my life, you mongrel! You will not!' Sorcha's mind screamed. Adrenaline pumped through her veins, fueled even more by the anger that was beginning to fall over the mare.

The strange sounds filled the air. The birds taking flight into the cooler air of Orangemoon caused the fem to look around curiously. The gold and ivory painted fem followed the sounds of wood breaking until she heard a growl. Hooves carried her toned form forward to see what was happening. Hazel eyes widened in anger and fear of the big brown creature before her as it attacked another. With a loud whinny that could of been more of a scream the dual colored fem charged in. Almost at once she used her magic that damned Tome Guardian had given her so many years ago it seemed now, trying to blind the bear at least long enough for her attack and the defence the unicorn mare was putting up would not be seen. It was worth a try after all, was it not? If they were to fail.... well both lives would be on the line....

It was large, it was fast. It was angry, because the loudmouthed horse was standing on her ground, in her space, too near the place where her cubs were resting. The grouchy mother had tolerated the presence, the sound of hooves, the smell of horse, but when it began to holler and make loud noises it became the last drop. She charged towards the mare on all fours, eyes gleaming angrily behind the long snout, where lips had been pulled away from massive teeth that could rip flesh and chew berries with the same ease. The bear didn't eat horses unless they were already weakened and dying or newly dead, and it was not out to hunt this time either. It simply wished to scare the trespassers away, scare them and punish them for disturbing.

She closed in quickly upon the horse, the heat of her presence radiating through the air, even from a distance. Almost able to nudge the two-colored unicorn, the force of the kick wasn't too great as it landed on the powerful chest, sturdy and padded by thick fur and the building layer of fat that would last her through the winter. The mother bear groaned from the pain of impact and snapped towards the haunches of the legs, intending to continue the surge forward and slam her great body into the horse...

Then a light appeared before her eyes, so bright that it hurt in the eyes. Pained and angered it rose up on massive hind legs, rising tall above the horse. Blindly she swatted towards the place where she thought her enemy was located, the enormous paw more than capable of bringing one of them down if it hit on the right place.

A falcon's scream cleaved the sky.

In the woods below a dusty stallion paused in his meandering, ears lifting as eyes leaped towards the clouds. A shape in the distance was spiraling in a slow circle. Coris was patrolling the outerlands since Mauja had expressed concern in hunting within the Edge too often and it seemed his falcon had just found his next target. A grin split the stud's grisly maw as he surged forward into a lope. He could sense a warning in Venati's alert, but for Coris that only meant an exciting hunt.

Leather thumped as the body breezed past tree branches, some snapping eagerly as the life had been drained from them in the harsh Tallsun season. Some bits of this debris snagged in the accessories the stallion wore, giving him an even more feral appearance than his maddening expression was already accomplishing. He'd look like quite the bush mongrel by the time he arrived, although he was not expecting an audience, not until he heard the shrill scream of the mare.

His pace quickened now, careening headlong through the trees at a sharp gallop. Hooves beat a rhythm into the ground as he moved, one his breathing artfully matched to provide the best endurance. Not long now... he could smell it.
Bear.

Mania filled the creases of the hunter's face as he rushed forward even faster, the thrill of it raising the blood in his ears to a deafening roar. Above Venati shrieked again, this time in protest to the blinding light. It dazzled the bird, so intently watching the scene below, and even startled Coris for a moment. His lead changed, caution restored to the giddy smith. He reigned in his patience and his stride to a short gallop just as he broke the brush.

A paw was raised, poised to swipe.
Coris ducked his head, aimed to strike.
Hooves hummed on the dirt below and his breaths came out like hot bursts of steam.

Coris flew the final feet. His right shoulder, buffeted a bit by some leather attire, lead him as a battering ram towards the bear's left side; he drew from behind it at an angle, luck of the approach. In the same instant he jerked his head up, hoping to snag a deep cut along the bear's soft under belly. This move would cause his forelegs to stiffen and he would land hard if at all. Should the bear collapse he'd likely be too tangled up and fall with it, but his haunches were strong and his frame agile. Should he just glance by the bear however, he'd turn neatly on his hindquarters and duck back around to its right side. He would need to stay close to the bear when behind it and far when in front.

Stony hooves thudded to the ground after connecting with their target. Before Sorcha could make another move, a loud whinny added into the fray. Then, suddenly, as if to add to her problems, the clearing got so bright that she could barely see. It astonished her, for it was one thing to fight something with full vision, but fighting something without sight was not in her repertoire. It was also then that she felt the beast's taloned paw slam into her right side. Breath was knocked from her lungs. The weight of the blow was ample, throwing her to the left hard. The mare's sturdy limbs had to scramble not to fall down. It's claws were not extremely sharp, but forceful enough to scrape the flesh on her upper side, sending peals of pain along the skin. The sensation only proved to further fuel her strong will to survive. She had no time to think of why the bear was attacking her; she knew little about the species in the first place. She had only time to act.

Mustering all the courage she had left, Sorcha pivoted back into the opposite direction, lowered her head slightly, and charged back towards the bear head-on. Or at least towards the position it had been in when it had scraped her rear. The limited visibility didn't allow for her to see much of anything; she had to go on scent now. Hopefully she would frighten off the assailant, and if not, the six sharp horns that ran from her brow would give the creature a nasty wound. Her face was now more vulnerable to the foe, but the girl needed to do something fast to ward this thing off. The scent of stallion just met her nostrils as she threw herself toward the bear. She could not see where the stallion was, and had no way of knowing that he was headed for the bear from another direction. The mare who was just so confident before was now unable to be sure of anything. It seemed as though the world was trying to take her down.

Ok so maybe, just maybe charging in like she had wasn't the best idea. The light blinded more than just the bear. The unicorn mare that Sols was trying to help and another who had rushed into the fray, looked to be a unicorn stallion with strange things hanging about him. The sound of a bird above alerted the fem that one of the others must have a companion. She felt a pang in her heart, the longing to be bonded. But she pushed that aside turning her body away, moving around behind the bear as the other two came from the sides. She charged forward, ready to throw her weight to shove the bear forward.

In her mind, her thoughts raced. What had she gotten herself into? What happened if the bear got a lucky swipe in? Surely Aaron didn't need her anymore, and with Ata gone well she really didn't have any reason to live. But Aaron's face kept racing through her mind. He may not need her, but she needed to live for him. The faces of her herd, and the Qian also seemed to spur her to keep going. She did have much to live for after all.

The mother bear grunted with satisfaction as one heavy paw hit her target. The strange, overbearing light only added to her frustration. She continued to lash out blindly at the obnoxious creatures. The faint blur and sense of movement of the painted Unicorn approached her front. With more wild swipes, the bear aimed for the mare's vague presence.

The sound of heavy hoof-beats announced the arrival of yet another wretched horse. Without her vision, the bear was taken off guard as the stallion rammed into her side. The force of the hit sent her stumbling sideways, but not fast enough to avoid a sharp cut from the Unicorn's horn. The bear matriarch bellowed out in pain. She had not expected to be attacked by so many of these mere prey animals, and certainly not without her eyesight. More thrums of hoof-steps sounded closer and closer. In defeat, she bounded heavily away from the horses. She was confused and her wounded hide stung, reminding her that she had to survive. Her young cubs needed her alive.

"FUCK" Coris screamed out as he stumbled to catch himself when tangled in the bear, head lifting just in time to watch the bear ambling down the forest. "VENATI" the stallion raged at the sky, his head shooting up, a drop of blood flung from his horn in the swift movement. The falcon turned a golden eye to the furious hunter that had lost his prey and turned on blue wings to pursue the bear through the woods.

Grumbling Coris turned his attention away from the tail feathers of the bird, stern eyes gazing over the mares at hoof. "Are you foolish?" Coris asked them with a gruff, almost scolding tone. "Can either of you take down a bear?" he demanded, breathless still from the exertion. He wasn't really sure he could take down a bear alone, it was certainly very large prey and a formidable foe, but he was much more capable than either of them.

He sighed, regretting his sternness as attempted to soften, although perhaps too late to save face by now. "I'm sorry, I did not mean to lecture. Your bravery and spirit is admirable, I only feared for your safety. I am Coris, of the World's Edge herd. Are either of you wounded?"

Sorcha's blood rushed as she charged the persistent beast. One of the bear's heavy paws clipped her left ear, luckily avoiding the more important aspects of her head. Before she could throw her quintuplet daggers into the mongrel's flesh, something else gave it a nasty blow. The fiery dame slammed her hooves into the ground, slowing to a violent halt. Slowly, vision returned to her crystal eyes just in time to see the massive beast retreating. For a moment, she stood still with widened eyes locked on it. It was safe to say that her carefree attitude was now, for the most part, tempered.

Sorcha began to study the two others who had seemingly come to her aid. A fellow unicorn had given the bear the powerful hit. He was a strange sight, what with his body fanatically covered in various leathers and knick knacks. She didn't have much time to look at the other mare before the smoky stallion addressed them both. His tone was certainly not appealing. How dare he speak to her like that? Insolent bastard!
"I would have torn that damned thing apart if it wasn't for you!" Her loud voice rang out. Red ears had laid themselves down furiously above her cold glare. First, she got attacked out of the blue by a crazed bear, and now some pig-headed stallion was talking to her as though she were little more than a filly! In honesty, the bear probably would have given her a few more wounds if this brute and the mare hadn't shown up, but she wasn't about to give her thanks to this rude boy, at least. Her heaving sides began to settle as she listened to the stallion's quick apology.

"Your fear is quite misplaced, Coris. But your concern is noble, I suppose." Sharp vocals replied, still holding undertones of anger and nearly spitting out his name. He must have some ego to go around addressing people like that. Though she was not too much better. Ignoring Coris's question, she turned a less hostile look towards the painted equine. "Thank you for trying to help me." Sorcha made a point of thanking the mare, who had shown no pompousness yet. She threw another heated glance in the horned boy's direction, then turned to inspect her own injuries. The scrapes on her barrel were not dire, and had only let a few short lines of blood trickle out. The hair would probably not grow back, and her roaned pelt would most likely carry them as faint scars. The whole thing could have gone much worse. Later on, she would look back on the encounter with fear; an emotion that had been foreign to her for a long time.
