KIPLING
Petrichor and pine weighed heavy on the drizzly air the morning that Kipling set out to roam away from the confines of the Hidden Falls. His spindly legs carried him south through thickening woods, plunging deep into the primordial heart of his mysterious new home. It was late in the morning on an unpleasant gray day, and the mists and drizzle that seeped between the old growth forest created a rather haunting landscape.

Well, “haunting” to most. Kipling was utterly delighted. It felt so wonderful to be strong enough to explore again! His travel through the woods was preposterously slow simply because he had to stop and study everything he encountered.

First, he marveled at the purple and white crocuses peaking up through the damp moss – harbingers of the better weather that awaited later in the season. Then, he paused to listen to the characteristic tap tap tap of some industrious woodpecker, equally undeterred by the weather. The birds were not as pleased with the gloomy weather, but occasional displeased chirps from the undergrowth drew his attention every so often.

Kipling came to rest in a dense thicket of trees. Between the gray weather and the depth of the forest around him, he could scarcely see more than ten feet around him. It was indeed a little claustrophobic, but nothing that could dampen the joy of the adventurer’s spirit. To his left, he noticed an unusually scarred tree, and – of course – he simply had to investigate.

He walked up to an ancient-looking fir that differed from the others thanks to the long gashes that were etched into its bark. Kipling habitually angled his long horn so that he could bring his face close to the marks without stabbing the tree. He brought his eyes to within inches of the rough surface of the trunk. These scars were very old; no sap had oozed from them for many years. The colt lifted his head and looked up into the arbor quizically before asking aloud, “So, what happened to you?”

He stood staring into the treetops, light drizzle trickling down his face, waiting for his answer.
