Just A Picture To Burn

Today was a good day. I woke early, which was starting to become a habit for me since I had been named a disciple of the Throat. I longed to have a closer relationship with the God of the Sun, to meet with him and learn from him... However with the last shake up of higher ranks, it had not been meant to be. I was closer still than just a mere mare among the ranks, but not as close as Tandavi was now or Cera had been.

Ah yes, Cera. My muzzle turned to a soft grin at the thought of the golden painted knight. If it were not for him, I would not be here in the Throat... If it were not for him... I wouldn't have this silly grin plastered all over my face. There was just something about spending time with the newly appointed Forger that I could not get enough of.

I shake my head gently, clearing my mind of the closeness of the caves of the Heart. I head off from the Oasis, choosing to stay on the sands instead of flight. My destination is simple, the fire of the diviner. Every morning for sometime now, I go there first to pray to the God of the Sun for wisdom. I know better than to ask him for anything for me, as it is not my place. Not at our herd's link to our Lord. No, if I was to do that I would go to the floating island or to the Vein of the Gods.

I kneel before the fire, offering up a simple prayer. "Our Lord, I come to ask simply for you wisdom for our Diviner and the rest of our herd as we face uncertain times. Many of us seek to find the one responsible for all the recent murders. I ask for Your protection for those who follow You and those who call Your patron lands home." I stand, not expecting an answer, just hoping that he would indeed hear my prayer and keep our small family safe.

The sun's rays warmed my back slightly. The bone chilling winds kept my wings tucked tight to my frame. Now what to do? I move slowly away from the fire, the sound of ice and sand crunching under my hooves. Perhaps I should meet others of the herd today? Well, to be honest I know I need to since I am just below those who lead each rank... The only one high within the wise ones was our Sultan and Sultana.... Speaking of which... I haven't seen either one since the herd meeting. Surely they just like the others of higher rank have been busy...

@[Gaucho] - Time for them to meet! <3

Gaucho in fact, was not too far away.

Although the Throat stayed typically warmer than the other herds, it was not excluded from the chill of Frostfall. Even though the season was slowly coming to a close, frost still littered the trees that lined their home, and held the blood red sands tightly together. Walking from the opposite direction towards the ever-burning fire, Gaucho was using his own fire magic to soften the sands. A flock of 5 eagles composed entirely of fire flew ahead of the dun, their flaming wings fanning and heating the ground. From his already flaming wings, Gaucho would periodically create archs of fires that extended thirty feet ahead of him, softening the sands in the same way that his creations did. As an emissary and warrior of the Sun, Gaucho would do all he could in his absence to warm and heat the Throat.

Ahead, he spied his newest disciple. It appeared as though she had been praying, that was good. The Wildfire flared his nostrils, picking up an easy canter across the sands. His flock of flaming fowl flew ahead of him, finding Amani and circling around her joyfully as they continued to soften the sands.

"Amani." He called easily as his large body moved easily her way. He didn't believe the two had actually spoken. Of course he called her name and rank at the herd meeting and so new her name, rank, and face, but had the two actually spoken? Perhaps they had, though he couldn't recall when. He didn't think she had been among the few who had disapproved of Midas' choice to make him Sultan the first time, and she surely hadn't said anything when the Sun God gave him back the rank this time around. Nearing her, his folded his flaming wings to his darkened flanks. In his antlers Mara slithered forward, her whitish body peering out through a tangle of black forelock. Her forked tongue dodged from her mouth as she scented the air, spying the girl with interest but slithering backwards into Gaucho's mane for warmth. She hated Frostfall more than most, as it made her sluggish and slow.

"Birdsong is soon. Gaucho glad when frost and cold is gone." He grunted turning away from her slightly and blasting an arch of fire towards the sands as if to emphasize his point.

Just A Picture To Burn

I was almost startled by the eagles made of flame. Was this a sign from the God of the Sun. I smiled, but my eyes brighten as I see our Sultan coming towards me. These birds must belong to him. The heat warmed my chilled bones, I stretch out my wings some before returning them to my sides. Amani I lowered my head slightly before looking up and meeting my Sultan's gaze. "Gaucho" I could not help but smile being in the presence of the one Father Sun had chosen as lead. This was the first time we had spoken on our own, most times I had even seen him was in the herd meetings. "Birdsong is soon. Gaucho glad when frost and cold is gone." I nodded again. "I will be glad when the warmth of BirdSong returns, but even more eager for the heat of TallSun." The blast of fire startled me, as I was not used to being around others who had fire magic.

In the Sultan's presence my own fire magic seemed to flow freely in my veins. I focused, deciding to try using my magic for something different. Three small balls of fire appeared around me, and I moved them along the sand around the Sultan and I to try and help warm the sands. If the sands stayed warm, maybe it would in turn help us stay warm as we stand and speak.

I keep my focus on my magic slightly, while returning to the conversation at hand. "How are you this morning?" My eyes only then focus in on the snake moving among his antlers and forelock. I took her as yet another bonded. "Who is this in your antlers?" What can I say, I am a curious young girl. Anything to get my mind off of Cera.... Oh darn it there I go again thinking of him. Ha, I really must stop this. After all, for one I am in the presence of one of my leaders... For two, not like Cera would ever notice me in that fashion.. Would he?

As the girl mentioned Tallsun, Gaucho nodded reverently. She was correct. While Birdsong heralded the return of their deity in the sky, his reign was not fully recognized until the first Tallsun sun rose high into the sky. Gaucho would welcome the return of those days - like Mara, he was growing tired of the cold. It was a time of death and sloth - foals weren't conceived, and the chill in the air made patrolling a nuisance. Food was harder to come by, and he and the rest of his warriors had to walk a fine line between staying lean and adding on extra fat to keep themselves warm. "Yes." Gaucho agreed, bobbing his antlered skull.

As balls of light appeared, Gaucho's dark gaze widened in surprise. Had he known Amani had fire magic? Had he known she possessed any magic? Mentally he reprimanded himself; Gaucho liked knowing the strengths and weaknesses of all in his family, but apparently he had overlooked the painted girl. Happy to have been proven ignorant about her abilities, he watched as she masterfully moved the flaming orbs to mirror the work he was doing. She was both skilled and astute. The Wildfire grunted and nodded in approval.

Not knowing the trials of Amani's heart, Gaucho directed the conversation promptly to a topic she was trying to avoid: Cera. "Fine. Looking for Cera. Need his help with a project for Throat." He was remiss on the details, purposefully not reveling more information than he had to. He needed the crafter's on board before his plan could truly begin, no sense in worrying the herd with half-baked ideas. "You know Cera?" He inquired, trying to be conversational (something he was clearly terrible at).

In reference to her identity, Mara slithered from the warmth of Gaucho's forelock. Her gunsteel coloured face poked through the black with a dull hiss. She was cold. Still, her bright black gaze regarded Amani with interest, as her head bobbed in greeting. "This Mara. Very poisonous. Can paralyze and hypnotize." He answered, his voice edged with pride as he spoke of his companion.

My Sultan agreed that the warmth of TallSun. Or rather, that is what I assume his yes means. Then again, the old saying goes assuming things can only make an ass out of you and me. Well. Let's hope that was not the case this time. Gaucho seemed surprised at my magic. Had I exactly hidden my talent.. No not at all. But I don't just go showing off to everyone I know... Okay okay, I did show it off one time.. To show Cera that I could be cool to. To try and impress him. Fat load of help that did. I'm no more noticeable now that I was as a nobody. However my leader seems to approve of my magic.

Then the subject is changed. Of course it has to change to the subject that I want to avoid. "Fine. Looking for Cera. Need his help with a project for Throat. Of course Cera... Always Cera. He went on to ask if I knew him... Of course I know him, how could I have a crush on him if I didn't know him. I was really good at hiding my feelings. So I hope. I smile and nod. "Cera is the one who brought me here. If I see him I will be sure to tell him that you are looking for him."

I was greatful at the change of subject yet again. This time to his companion. I nodded to her as well. "It is a pleasure to meet you Mara. I hope I never have to find out just how powerful or poisonous you are." Inside however my heart yearns for the connection these two have. To have someone, always.

Gaucho didn't know that Cera frequented the Threshold ... then again, everyone probably did at one point or another. It was a right of passage almost. When Gaucho had first joined recruiting new members had been a daily activity for him. Although not many who he escorted here remained (Vesta painfully came to mind), some did. Looking at Amani now he was pleased Cera had been there to escort her home, even if it wasn't from the Threshold.

"Mmm." The dun grunted at her offer to pass along the message should she find Cera. "If you find him you tell him. Maybe you stay and help him too. You not have magic that lets you find metal, but if Amani have nothing better to do, maybe stick with Cera. He need help lately."

As the conversation was directed towards her, Mara slithered forward gracefully. The sunlight glittered off of her pale skin as she regarded the child with a polite interest in her black eyes. She nodded her head wisely as Amani indicated that she wouldn't want to find out the extent of Mara's prowess when it came to poisoning. Gaucho chuckled deeply and nodded. "No. You not want to find out." He agreed. Looking to the skies the Sultan sighed. There was much to do today.

His gaze fell back to the disciple warmly. For one so young she held her responsibility well. He approved. "Find Cera." He reminded her, spreading his flaming wings from his flanks. Gaucho nodded briefly before taking to the skies in a flurry of dark feathers and fire.

Figured we should end here and maybe start a new one later with her promotion? :D
