Long, sooty ears hovered nervously as the bright warble of waking birdlife and the steady roar of falling water filled the air. The sentry above rumbled softly as sharp violet eyes roamed, attentive, ill at ease in a land so dissimilar to vast burning desert sands and the familiar, luxuriant oasis nestled into its centre. The sights, the sounds, they were all stunningly unique, overwhelming, and though Africa was well at home in the company of the Gallant, she knew not very much about the Asylum who dwelt by his side, or those who had lingered on after the Foothills had become no more. She drank as much as she dared, the water was freezing and her stomach growled loudly in protest- still near empty, as her appetite was yet to return. Lashes parted slowly, and light-golden eyes fell upon the faintly rippling reflection of a mare she barely knew – eyes were sunken, tired and dull, the expression wrought through her drawn face was strained and sombre, and strange fire licked arrogantly above; a vain, hopeless gamble for affection.

A chipped hoof danced forward to break the image; to see such was pointless, to dwell was inane, and the one-winged mare sighed heavily. All in good time... she thought to herself reassuringly, ...all in good time.

From somewhere high above the unmistakeably strident call of her bonded rang clear above the rest, and Africa’s head lifted quickly, flames whirling with excitement – a stranger lingered near, calling out, eyes wide and fearful enough to strike the same through the dappled mare’s heart. Joints clicked gruesomely as she twisted too quickly to view behind, and she stumbled precariously as the weak bank of the pond threatened to crumble at her clumsy touch. “Oh!” she cried out, and she teetered, but clenched thighs thrust her to safety, to solid, grassy earth, and bewildered to turned back to the antlered mare. “What is it!” Panicked vocals burst from her throat and heart thundered on as confusion set in. Africa could see nothing to cause such alarm, though she certainly was no veteran in these parts, and knew better than to ignore such a clear warning.
