A LITTLE DARK AND A LOT CONFUSING.
Gaucho hardly noticed the distance or time that the flight to the Arch ate up. His mind was far too lost in thoughts of guilt and failure. Elsa had told him that the beauty had died, and he could hardly believe it. It was far harder to stomach than Vesta's death, even though she had been a warrior. Vesta had been gone, off fulfilling her own agenda as she was want to do. The mare was headstrong and mobile as the breeze, and nearly as unpredictable. Her death had been as well. But Phaedra? The glistening mare rarely strayed from their borders. Had Gaucho been so focused on protecting his family that his tunnel vision had actually left them worse off? Was this his fault? Why had she been this far North? Who was it she was with?
These thoughts and many like them tossed and tumbled around his primitive brain as he and the rest of the group from the Throat flew North.
Landing easily in the snow, the dun snorted. Flaming wings stayed stretched outwards from his body, and, in a flurry of wings suddenly released three arcs of fire that radiated outwards upon the ground. Birdsong was rapidly approaching and so the ground was not as hardened as it could be. The fire that spewed from his darkened feathers helped to melt some of the snow making their footing more sure and the walk easier. Ahead, amidst the hoof prints lay the two bodies, preserved by the cold. A chill ran up and down Gaucho's spine as he looked down upon the murdered golden girl.
In that moment, Gaucho reserved to do better by his herd. He would know them all, know their strengths and weaknesses. He would be there for them, always.
