Did Gaucho feel nervous? Perhaps. What was about to come would fundamentally change everything. Although he felt better after having spoken with his herd and the God of the Sun about alternatives to the boats, what was about to occur was daunting. To have his senses retarded while he was completing such an important task seemed a huge handicap. Yet if the God of the Sun gave him this task, surely it was one he could complete. The whole of his faith was devoted to the golden deity, and in this he would not falter.

He would burn, but would never fizzle out. Gaucho would never let his light, the physical representation of the Sun God's power, dwindle or fizzle. He would burn strong, bright, and hot. He would serve his lord, and protect his herd. His family.

Gliding in the moist Birdsong air made Gaucho feel invigorated. Two buckets clanged on his forelegs as he glided, holding his knees to his chest so that the metal tools would not fall. One was crafted with great skill, while the other was awkward and obtuse. Still, both would serve his purpose equally well (the bucket Buce created did not appear to have any holes in it that he could see). This part of the task was simple enough - gather oil from the Endless Blue -

[silence].

Gaucho didn't realize just how much Mara's mind filled his own until it disappeared. The quiet thrum of her mind was suddenly pulled from his as he glided over the sands and towards the water. He snorted, tossing his head slightly to ensure he could still feel her weight on his skull, which indeed he could. Could she still hear him? He both thought and said: "Evolat" followed up by a weary sigh.

Perhaps this would be harder than he thought.

Angling himself downwards, hearing the rush of the air against his skin but not Mara's mind-voice, Gaucho glided towards the sands. As he landed, he leaned backwards so that he could delicately place the buckets upon the sands and remove his forelegs before fully landing. His wings closed against his flanks as his stormy gaze surveyed the beach.

Now all he needed was to find the oil.

[Open to anyone. Gaucho can't hear anything anyone says right now as part of his quest!]

There had been no real need to worry over his brother and fatherly figure, for Gaucho was more than capable of defending himself. Even so, Cera could not imagine the fear and vulnerability that accompanied losing any of the senses that Gaucho had alluded to. Though the Prince had not intentionally followed the Sultan to the oceanside, after his patrol with Amani there had been a desire for fresh air and the tang of salt upon his nostrils. The caves were cramped and dreary, with shadows of old fear and forlorn hopelessness, and with every passing hour that the sun sank down it had only seemed to close in further on the young Forger. Bidding Amani a bittersweet goodbye, laced with promises of further time together, the golden son had let the winds guide him to the widest space he knew.

The air was cool and crisp, Ilaria's absence only felt deeper the further he flew from the southern borders of his home. She was safe with Ryuu, and in turn his nephew was safe with Ilaria to guard him as Fina once had for him during his colthood, but at times he missed their combined solidarity. After all, she had been his only consistent companion throughout his foalhood. A sad realization, but Cera liked to believe that he had grown up to be so much more than a lost little babe with too-long legs and stumbling words borne of abandonment.

Dropping from the currents that held him aloft, he spiraled down, loose and lazy until pale hooves kicked up sand in a spray that stung his lower legs. He spent the rest of his time wandering down the length of the water, the only sounds accompanying him on his trek the shush of the water and the soft cries of the gulls. Until a thump of arrival brought his head to turn towards the newcomer, only to have recognition fall upon him like an anvil.

Picking up the pace, the youth surged towards his leader, already feeling solemn. It would be hard, to see Gaucho indisposed in any way. Gaucho was one of the few members of his family he had left, and Cera didn't want to see the proud warrior he knew brought lower in any way by his own selflessness. In many ways, quests were unfair. His own had been placed lower on his list of responsibilities, sacrificing his personal magic to help his family and strengthen their chances. Maybe he could be as gallant and self-sacrificing as Gaucho someday.

Approaching at enough of an angle to be seen, unsure of which sense Gaucho was to be deprived of soon (unless it was already active), Cera slowed to a halt and extended a wing towards Gaucho's shoulder. A gesture of support and affection, the same glowing like emerald fire in his eyes. I am here for you. And so he stood and awaited the trial that he could not really help Gaucho with. Not really.

In his antlers Mara's body wriggled, pulling back and forth on his tines to try and get his attention. Gaucho's dark ears flickered as his head gradually rose from inspecting the sands to try and discern what it was the snake had in mind. Softly ahead he heard footfalls upon the sand, a sound that his ears were well used to from his years in the Throat.

Years. The dun could scarcely believe it had been so long, and yet to think of having been anywhere else seemed absurd. The many seasons ago that Levi had found him in the Threshold seemed like another lifetime. It had happened to him and yet ... he had come so far. He had learned the language, understood the customs (at least most of them), and had forged a new family. Now he led the family that once took him in. Seeing Cera reminded him of the gulf between who he was when the Throat took him in, and who he was now. It reminded him of why he was in this beach in the first place, why he would willingly give up his senses and dull himself to the world; to protect and serve those who had put their faith in him. And for the ones who hadn't, for the ones who sneered and doubted behind his back ... well, this was for them too.

As Cera approached, the Wildfire watched his lips to see if he was speaking. The prince's lips didn't move, which wasn't surprising. Cera knew of his quest and knew what it entailed. Further, he wasn't one to waste words on the dun anyhow. Still ... "CAN'T HEAR WORDS" Gaucho practically yelled. Without the sound of his own words resonating in his ears he had a hard time knowing just how loudly he was actually speaking.

He returned Cera's wingbrush with one of his own, casting brilliant light upon the golden one's coat with the flames that licked Gaucho's dark feathers. As he regarded Cera suddenly many questions occurred to him. Perhaps it was the inability to hear the answers that caused his brain to formulate so many queries. Things like, Did Cera know or suspect anyone as the murderer? or Did you know I went to see Midas? or What is Amani to you? Snorting, Gaucho pushed these thoughts from his mind. He would remember them, or Mara would (if she still had access to this thoughts during this time, that is), and ask them later. For now, the silence spurred Gaucho to action. He needed to begin this.

"NEED TO FIND THE OIL." He yelled once again, indicating towards the two buckets that were strewn by his hooves; one of Cera's making, the other Buce's. Gaucho knew that oil and water did not mix, which led him to believe that he would not find any oil along the shore. Perhaps it was hidden somewhere? In the caves that speckled the coast? Or did they have to dig?

The shout that crumples the silence like an artist crushing away the ghost of a failed idea has pale golden ears of early morning sunlight slicing backwards, warding away the too-loud syllables. Even so, his smile does not falter, though perhaps it tinges towards a side of amusement. It melts into a brotherly fondness as their wings meet and touch against shoulders, far different yet similar in their desire to hold the burdens of their family. Gaucho's physically were more fitting for the job, but Cera hoped that he was not so far behind in stature that his family would find him weak, unable to defend them. His blood would pour upon every particle of sand the desert had to give before Cera would allow his family harm. Evolving the Throat into an island was no offensive, but it was something he would task himself to helping with if it meant invasions (oh how he detested them, the memory of agonized days watching helplessly as his father's once-broad stature disappeared on the horizon to war while he was stuck beneath the boughs of the magnolia that had gone from home to prison in moments) would no longer be a possibility.

Oil.

He is drawn back sharply, for without Ilaria he is helpless to keep his at times wandering mind on more important tasks. Then again, it's rather impossible to miss the hollering that Gaucho has going on. Cera fears he'll lose his own hearing soon enough.

Instead, he turns to his knowledge of the Throat, of the material he often felt when using his magic to search the earth below for metal of value. Oil was thick, like pockets of wet darkness, and Cera knew the sensation well. So that meant that it had to be below their very hooves. Cera caught Gaucho's eyes first, ruffling himself as if to say look at me. Then, he lifted one foreleg to pound it ruthlessly into the sand, pawing and scoring at the earth heavily. Dipping his long neck, he nosed at the area, bumping his nares into it to signify what he meant. Below. Dig.

It was almost fun.

Cera. He would always be so much more than Gaucho gave him credit for; would always be older, wiser, and more useful. But it couldn't be helped, in Gaucho's simple mind the golden prince was still a youth. The Wildfire needed to constantly realign his perception of the stallion, who was no longer a bumbling child.

Gaucho's dark gaze followed the movement of Cera's feathers, falling to the sands where the prince began to roughly shove sand out of the way. Ahhh.. so they did have to dig. Unfortunately his fire magic would do little good here - it would only fuse the sand together creating glass that would be heavy to move. Snorting, the dun lowered his head so that Mara could slip from his antlers. Her bound wound easily on the warm grains, pushing some out of the way with her steel-coloured bulk. Raising a large blackened hoof Gaucho too began to paw, shoving the sand roughly away. Hopefully no one would come from behind lest they receive bullets of sand headed their direction.

Sweat began to lather on Gaucho's coat, but the dun didn't mind. He found the ache in his muscles pleasurable - it wasn't often that he found an activity that he hadn't already trained and conditioned his body to complete.

"HAVE NEW CRAFTER NOW THAT BUCE IS CHANCELLOR." He bellowed towards Cera between mouthfuls of air.
"SACRE HAS MAGIC TO HELP. SERENITY SAY SHE WILL HELP MOVE ROCKS TOO. AFTER THIS. FIND THEM. GIVE THEM JOBS."

Not the best time for a conversation but ... the information he needed to share was one sided. Cera needed to be aware of the change; he could deal with his new recruits as he saw fit.

Dark eyes bore into the sand. How far down would they need to go?

So many often cast away Gaucho merely because he could not speak their tongue as well as they, the language they'd grown up knowing having been something he'd never tasted before he'd arrived in Helovia. Cera knew that many thought Gaucho incapable of higher thinking, that they found him to be not very intelligent. He recalled when Rasta had such reservations herself, when Gaucho had first been promoted. To them, Cera had a few rather creative phrases. They had never bothered to understand, merely reading the cover that Gaucho represented, but there were a thousand novels inside if one cared to get to know the Wildfire. Cera perhaps had a bit of hero worship tucked away inside to make him so biased, but Gaucho was far more intelligent than others assumed, and the clarity that quickly came as Cera pawed at the ground was only further proof of that. The young Forger couldn't withhold a smile.

Together they silently set to work, and though Gaucho was far more muscular than the lithe, athletic Forger, Cera nonetheless worked until his neck was thick with foam and his nares wide and pink with exertion. Shouting from his partner startled him, and he slowed from his digging to listen to what his sultan was saying. The prospect of help was certainly a weight of his slim shoulders, as he'd often been the only one even mildly interested in the art of crafting, and as such had done more as an apprentice than most of the appointed council. At the same time he had to battle the sudden feeling of possessiveness that sprang up inside him, demanding that he be the only one to carry out the Wildfire's orders.

If Ilaria were there, she would certainly call him out on his carrying of adolescent problems into unfitting circumstances.

Catching Gaucho's eye, he nodded to show he understood and would carry out the task of delegation. Then he gazed back down to the earth and continued to spear his hooves into the now-moist earth. At least they were getting closer.

Sweat glistened brightly on Gaucho's neck as well as he worked away. He was finding it difficult the further down he went to keep the sand from the edges to stop falling back in. His bulk was often to blame, as his elbows or even chest at times succeeded in undoing the work of the past few minutes. Gaucho's dark ears pinned against his head as he began to make the hole wider and wider, focusing some of his energy on the diameter that than just the depth. It slowed his progress but it was certainly a more efficient choice.

Muscle pain began to eat away at Gaucho's shoulders as his movements continued. He didn't have any muscles already developed that had been conditioned for digging. Clenching his teeth together and exhaling breath after agitated breath, Gaucho forced himself to continue. He would not take a break, would not linger and half ass it. If the oil was down there Gaucho was going to bring it up. Besides, with Cera working as diligently at his side how could he not follow suit?

After what felt like hours, the sand which had previously been moist and dark was suddenly slick and black. A squeal of joy left Gaucho's lips as he hauled himself backwards, looking at the oil as it caught the light of the sun. Brilliant and colourful patterns danced and swayed on the liquid that seemed to just sit on the surface of the sand, not mixing with it at all.

"CERA. GAUCHO FIND. YOU FIND TOO?" He hollered, looking down at the oil. Peeling his gaze away to find the golden prince, he noted just how deep his own hole was. If Gaucho had found oil likely Cera had as well.

Leaning backwards Gaucho rose to a standing position, shaking the sand from his legs and giving his aching muscles a chance to relax. His back screamed as it was called out of its hunched over position, but Gaucho ignored it. They had done it! He trotted a few steps away to where he had dropped the buckets. Picking up one in his teeth he deposited it to the crafter. Returning for the other, he brought it to his own hole. After digging down only slightly farther the dun was pleased to see that there was enough oil that it easily filled the bucket.

Snorting with joy and appreciation that his time digging in the sand was over, the Wildfire brought the bucket out of the hole carefully using his teeth.

With Cera's help he had done it.

Step one complete.

This wasn't so bad.
