Lakota
Her smile makes you wonder where she's been

Changing back is almost as bad as the previous process, for instead of shrinking she is inexorably expanding. She wants to scream, because it doesn't really hurt but it aches. It feels so profoundly wrong that she wants to wrench away from it, and yet she cannot. It is over as soon as it began, and she is left winded and standing on shaky legs, a foal in the water as she breathes heavily upon the surface of the arena she'd been trapped within mere moments ago. Ripples form beneath her exhales, until she is steady enough to lift her head.

Before her is Ktulu, in the form she was meant to be in, and Lakota stumbled towards her on knees that begged for a moment longer. Lakota firmly denied them that chance, the drive to check over her mate for lasting effects (or Gods forbid injuries for she would tear apart an immortal regardless of her status) far stronger than the flimsy needs of her body.

The touch of her mate is like an exodus of all her worries, and she breathes in the natural scent of the Constrictor, feeling tension ease from her marrow like the water that drips off her hocks. "Are you okay?" she breathes, circling her mate quickly, as close as she dares without losing too much of her sight to ensure there is no lasting damage on her beloved's body. A lopsided grin comes to her lips when there is nothing found, and she laughs a little bitterly, trying to lighten the mood. They would need it, for the next trial that was surely waiting in the wings.

"Well...that was fun?" A total lie, but she trusted Ktulu to know her well enough to read the attempt between the lines. They needed to be secure, steadfast, and await the next judgment they would have to face. Lakota was not so easily beaten, and she wasn't going to give up on the one thing that would make her happy. She already knew Ktulu would match her step for step, and there was no doubt that they would triumph in the end. "That was pretty fucked up, though. You okay?" Lakota could not even imagine how hard it must have been for Ktulu, as the predator in the situation, and concern flooded her gaze as she murmured it quietly for only her mate to hear. As if there were any other present.

KTULU the CONSTRICTOR
what if this storm ends and leaves us nothing

Finally changing back into her normal form did nothing to lessen the amount of anger that Ktulu felt toward the Earth God. She was convinced that he was playing games with them and it made her all the more tempted to give him a piece of her mind the next time that she saw him. It was, perhaps, not the smartest thing that she could do, but who did he think he was? Didn't he put himself on a pedestal? Wasn't he supposed to be so much kinder than his siblings? It seemed that he was no better than the rest of them, playing with mortals for their own shits and giggles. It pissed her off beyond all rational thought.

The change back did not affect her as harshly as it had affected Lakota, and that was thanks in part to her magic that allowed her to shape-shift. Still, it was uncomfortable and she found herself moving her legs to stretch them as Lakota crawled toward her from the water. True to her character, the Poisoner was soon inspecting every inch of her body to make sure she had no injuries. "I'm fine. Are you?" Ktulu murmured as she reached to press her muzzle against Lakota's neck and breathe in her scent, silently praying that she would not still smell like fish. It would not surprise her if the smell lingered as part of the Earth God's sick little game he was playing.

"I think the Earth God is really a troll masquerading as God." Ktulu said, not bothering to hide the bitterness that laced her voice. She snorted at Lakota's comment about it being fun, though she knew her love well enough to know she thought nothing of the sort. "He has more fun in store for us." Her tail twitched in irritation as the words left her mouth. "Twice more." She supposed the best thing was to get it over with as quickly as possible and have the Earth Troll out of their hair for a while. "Lets get the second part of this quest finished."

Ready for the tables to turn?

Ktulu's legs narrowed suddenly as her body began to shrink in size. Her chest became narrower, her rib cage contracted and rose as her tail fused together and shriveled away. Her horn disappeared, and her nose crumpled together to form a soft and rather elegant muzzle. Her fur paled becoming the colour of straw, dotted by a few spots on her rump.

Ktulu had become a fawn.

Simultaneously Lakota's body condensed as well, shrinking low to the ground as her muscles expanded within a body that possessed far more agility. The blueness of her coat blossomed into a dull orange, as her eyes moved from the side of her head to the front: predators eyes. Sharp teeth snaked out of her mouth as her jaw completely reshaped itself, as it was now able to open much wider. Her hooves split open into great paws, with sharpened claws on the end, while her tail fused and elongated into what would feel like an additional appendage.

Lakota has become a tiger.

Lakota
Her smile makes you wonder where she's been

There is hardly any time for her to recover, as little as she desires to stall. If she pushes onward there is little time to doubt, to wonder and fear and percolate on the possibilities. Instead she leaned subtly into Ktulu's touch, taking strength from the gentle touch, the ghost of warm breath that caressed her skin. Familiar, comforting. She doesn't bother to nod, merely giving a soft noise of assent. "I'm fine. Just frustrated I guess." Not nearly as much as Ktulu, clearly, but the cherry mare had a different, more complex relationship with the celestial being that was orchestrating their quest. Was she disappointed? No, Lakota doubted it. Ktulu was not the type to place false hope and belief into someone like the Earth God, to be subservient or eternal in her loyalties to a being that was guaranteed to work against Ktulu's personal desires when called upon for his "greater good" duties. It was likely she was angered to have been put in a situation where she not only could have hurt Lakota, but was instinctively urged to. Lakota was aware the harsh warrior still held guilt in her heart for the scar she'd given Lakota, the pain she'd caused as a wraith. Her own anger simmered like a boiling pot for a similar reason; protectiveness. Wasn't that proof of their love? That they would feel such intense anger for the God for hurting the other, rather than themselves? Because the sapphire nurse hated him in that moment, for making her mate relive what Kota had fought to get her to let go.

There was hardly any time for laughter before the pain is upon her again, and she whimpers this time, the sensation worse while she was still sore and recovering from changing back already. When she opens her eyes, everything is different, but beneath her gaze is a fawn. Hunger and instinct clench in her bones, and new claws unsheathe, fangs glinting and tail thrashing with the nearness of her prey. Just as she is coiling for the pounce, her heart jolts. It's more painful than anything she's ever experienced, and with a yowl of agony she threw herself bodily away from the figure she at last recognized as her mate.

While she can still control herself, Lakota scrambled for the nearest tree, letting her new body's instincts take hold as she clawed upward. Desperate, nearly deranged, scoring up the bark as she hauled herself up to the higher branches and clung tight to a moderately thick one. She feels like vomiting, like someone has taken a shredder to her insides, has injected her own poison straight into her heart. It hurts, it hurts, it hurts!

She gags and sobs, shuddering on the branch with the intensity of her own suppressed emotions. The shock of what she'd nearly done cripples her barriers. Why would the God change her while she was tangled in Ktulu's embrace? Why would he put Ktulu in such immediate danger? Did he know Lakota's love would catch her in the nick of time? But she nearly hadn't. Her body had been too new, her disoriented state too strong, her mate too close. Far worse than the previous trial, where they'd been separated first.

Her own horror seizes her, until she is shaking and choking, the branch her only comfort. Words refuse to come to her, but she is making pathetic sounds of pain and fear that no tiger (much less someone like her) should be making. She's scared to look down, scared Ktulu would hate her, or worse would fear her. New vocals shake and she croaks out her love's name, broken and clearly revealing the intensity of her pain, her sudden tidal wave of self-loathing. "K-Ktulu?"

KTULU the CONSTRICTOR
what if this storm ends and leaves us nothing

It happened again, all too quickly for Ktulu's liking, but she was not completely surprised when their bodies changed. If the Earth God was anything, it was predictable. She had to wonder, though, what he was trying to do. Was he trying to tell them that they did not belong together? That they were toxic? Neither one of them good for the other? A frown marred the delicate features of Ktulu's face. What did he know? What relationship did he have with anyone aside from his worshipers? He was the God of the Earth not the God of relationships. As the thoughts filtered through her mind they effectively distracted her from realizing exactly what shapes their bodies had taken on. It was only when she heard Lakota's voice speak her name that she noticed that her mate was no longer by her side, but somewhere else. Ktulu looked left then right before finally looking up and finding a tiger in a tree looking down at her.

Her heart felt like it took off at a gallop and was beating against her sternum, desperate for an escape. Fear made Ktulu stumble backwards several steps before she stopped, her legs locked as a thought struck her. If Lakota was a tiger then what had the Earth Troll turned her into? Ktulu's gaze snapped down and the first thing she saw were her pencil thin brown legs and her cloven hooves. "...the fuck is this?!" She screeched angrily. "Really? A deer?" She turned her head to check out the rest of her body and saw the spots that dotted her back and that only made her more frustrated. "A FAWN!" He couldn't have made her an adult with longer legs in case Lakota couldn't control herself?

Wait. What was she thinking? Of course Lakota could control her urges. She was strong, she was reliable.

Ktulu looked back up at Lakota, fighting with the instinct that told her to run and find a place to bed down and hide. "...Kota."her mate's name in as soothing a voice as she could manage. "You okay?" Damn the Earth God. Damn him.

Lakota
Her smile makes you wonder where she's been

From her vantage point in the tree, Lakota shakily watched her beloved come to terms with her own new form. One that Lakota's had horrifically appreciated, for reasons she still felt too ill to consider. Her new claws scored and scratched at the branch she was laying upon, a purely nervous motion as her stomach roiled and riled against her. New, elongated tail curled tightly in coils round her new branch, her perch, and were she on the ground once more she did not doubt it would be tucked beneath her belly in terrible fear and self-hatred. Her emotions were beyond volatile, and she still felt vaguely ill. Were tigers capable of vomiting?

Below, Ktulu was ranting over her young state, bellowing out her shock as she finally deciphered what she'd become. It brought a reluctant smile to the Poisoner's lips, and she found herself ruminating on that. How could the Earth God possibly think they were unsuited for one another, when Ktulu was capable of making her smile even when she was completely consumed by her own fear and self-loathing? Who was he to determine the strength and validity of their love for one another? If he supposedly cared so much, he wouldn't allow relationships that were based on pure lust, nor would he allow mares to be preyed upon by wicked stallions wanting only to manipulate and use them.

This was exactly what Lakota had feared when they'd approached the shrines. This was exactly why she'd hoped for any god aside from the Earth God.

Soothing, familiar vocals caress her ears, and Lakota slowly began to relax. Only, that meant her shock began to wear off, and her anger took over. She was incapable of crying effectively, especially not when she was aware the Earth God was watching over her. "No, no I'm not okay!" She tried to growl it but it came out as more of a sob. "It happened so fast, and you were so close and-" breaking off she choked, claws digging harshly into the branch once more. "I-I almost hurt you, Ktu. He almost made me hurt you, just because I wanted to be near you. He didn't even wait, he did it on purpose so that I was disoriented!" Her distress was a red flag to her mate, undoubtedly. Ktulu always knew when she was on the brink, and Lakota wouldn't even be broadcasting it as much as she was right then.

"I hate him," she whimpered. "I hate him, I hate him so fucking much. I just want to be done and go home, I just want our family," she hiccuped, voice soft and quiet with shame at her own admission. She didn't intend to give up, but it didn't mean she couldn't long for it to be over.

KTULU the CONSTRICTOR
what if this storm ends and leaves us nothing

"Enough, Lakota." Ktulu could not help the hard edge to her voice. She was just as angry with the Earth God as Lakota was. "The important thing is that you didn't hurt me, right?" Her thin legs shuffled as she spoke, instinct preparing her to flee should Lakota be angry with the tone of her voice. Ktulu hated this. She hated being scared of someone that she loved. It wasn't right and she couldn't understand why the Earth God would be doing this to them. If she felt any fear at all toward Lakota it would be the fear that she wouldn't be able to protect her from someone wanting to harm her, or that her mate would die and leave her alone. That should be the only fear she should have to face.

"I hate this just as much as you do, Kota." She fidgeted, her fluffy white tail flicking from side to side. "And right now I hate him for this just as much as you. But we have to do this. We have to. If we back out we're only proving to him that we're not committed, right? So lets prove to him that we are. Lets take our commitment and shove it down his divine throat." She wished she felt as confident on the inside as her words made her, but she was still scared, terrified, that Lakota would leap from the tree and make a meal out of her.

Tired of the constant fidgeting of her body, Ktulu finally lay down and looked up at her mate turned tiger in the tree. "Get a hold of yourself." She really couldn't do this alone. She needed Lakota to suck it up, find the inner strength that seemed to have vanished, and be strong for her, too. "Come down here."

Lakota
Her smile makes you wonder where she's been

Lakota and Ktulu had never had the typical sort of love. They loved with the intensity of a wildfire, and burning was a calculated risk. They were storm chasers, arsonists, and they threw their love at one another like exploding shrapnel that would embed itself in their skin whether they wanted it to linger there or not. It would ache with every movement, a constant reminder of that fierce, powerful love. For them, love was war, and though others may look down upon them and their odd ways, that was why they fit together so perfectly. Love, for them, was not composed of sugared words and batted lashes. So they simply never cared to do anything else with the emotions that resided within them. Few had any actual influence in their lives, so the rest- and their opinions- could burn in the fires they'd set.

As such, their supposed harsh treatment of each other was only ever for the best. Lakota needed the sharp words to kick her axis back into place, settle her world where it needed to be once more. With a jolt, she let the words take hold like barbs in her skin, pulling her like a marionette into the proper position. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Lakota felt her world slowly fall back into place, like sanity snowflakes that took their damn sweet time coating her and calming her panic attack.

When she had come to herself, she let her squeezed lids peek open to look at her beloved, and this time she had the equilibrium to allow herself a snort of laughter. A fawn. It really was degrading.

"Thank you," she said softly, though her voice was more than sufficient in finding her beloved's ears. Ktulu was one of the few to whom she'd express such apparent gratitude, but she'd needed the abrupt shock to her system to keep her from damning the quest to hell and fleeing, or begging her mate to leave with her. It was a warm comfort to know that regardless of how Ktulu personally felt, she'd never leave. Not when she knew that beneath the Poisoner's temporary fear, she wanted foals more than anything. She would have forced Lakota to stay, either way, and though others may have found it to be rather infuriating behavior, the Poisoner only found comfort.

A grin curled evil and beautiful in her fanged face as Ktulu spoke, the passion cowering behind her shock burning away the lingering effects. Obeying Ktulu's request, she slowly clawed back down the tree, far less elegant than when she'd been relying solely on instinct. She must look ridiculous, hair on end and tail straight with her own discomfort and lack of trust in her new form. The poor tree was likely scarred to hell by the time her massive paws were back on the earth, but she abruptly sheathed her claws. The temptation wouldn't help.

Moving closer to Ktulu, her stomach squirmed, but the Constrictor's words rang in her head. They would prove him wrong. They could do this. So she moved closer, until she was within touching distance, but allowing Ktulu to take the last step and find her own comfort level. Sitting on poised haunches, Lakota gazed out at Ktulu from vibrant violet eyes, going very still and allowing her mate to find her own boundaries.

"Nobody is going to keep me from my babies," she quite literally hissed, determination strong in her gaze once more. They were not even conceived, and already she held a fierce protective instinct for them. All traces of her previous meltdown had disappeared, all because her mate knew her better than she knew herself. Take that, you glorified fucker.

KTULU the CONSTRICTOR
what if this storm ends and leaves us nothing

Ktulu merely nodded her head as Lakota thanked her the verbal slap that knocked her back into line and made her become serious about their situation once more. "I need you to be strong." she said, looking up to the tree as Lakota slowly made her way down. "Think of it like war. Us against him and retreat is not an option." She knew that Lakota would understand better than anyone because everything in their lives had been a battle from taking over the Foothills to fighting to be together. This was just one more battle waged against them, one more victory on their belts. They needed to fight the instincts that came with their new bodies and stand together against everything that the Earth Troll threw at them.

The hardest part was the natural fear she felt when she looked at Lakota. It was that fear that set her heart to galloping wildly in her narrow chest, made her muscles tremble and shake with the desire to flee into the woods. Ktulu swallowed and rotated her large ears forward as the sound of Lakota's steps became louder. It was like alarms screaming at her to move, to run. She knew that if she was warring with the instinct as badly as she was that it had to be worse for Lakota.

"Come closer." Ktulu spoke. "Lay with me." She did not trust the frail body that she was confined to to not run once she stood. She trusted Lakota far more to control the body she was locked inside of and the instinct that came with it. Her dark nose twitched as Lakota spoke of their babies. "Tell me about them. What do you want? What do you want to name them?" If they kept the conversation along the lines of their children she thought the instincts could be better controlled. Hopefully Lakota would prove her right and relax, which would allow her to relax as well.

Lakota
Her smile makes you wonder where she's been

A feral grin crossed her feline face at the analogy Ktulu had used. War. Lakota knew war well, and knew it even better when by her mate's side. She could still recall the taste of death on her tongue, the promise of blood when she'd seen her beloved fall on the battlefield. Nothing could have separated her from Ktulu even then, long before romantic sentiments had taken root in her soul.

Leaping down from the tree with as little real distance achieved as she could manage, rounded ears kept themselves rigidly on her lover's new form. Whether it was her new form's instincts or her own desire to be aware of whatever next fell from her lips was uncertain. There was little doubt that they would win what Ktulu had dubbed their new war. Nothing had stopped them in the past, and Lakota would see this particular battle through no matter how hard it got. With Ktulu supporting her and wading through it simultaneously at her side, she wouldn't fail.

Lakota's new sensitive hearing caught the tremulous swallow, and instead of a new surge of bloodlust, she instead felt sympathy and an overwhelming surge of love. Even overwhelmed by her own fear, Ktulu was still her rock, her guiding light in the maelstrom she'd become for a few moments. She loved the stupid, foolhardy warrior more than she'd ever imagined being capable of. All she wanted was to be just as stupid and foolhardy for the rest of her life with Ktulu.

Stepping slowly closer, Lakota forced her tail to sink and her frame to minimize, hoping to console her mate's instinctive side by showing herself as less of a threat. Not that it was easy, considering their sole size difference. Fear choked her throat at the idea of moving closer, the fresh memory of how she'd almost hurt Ktulu making her reluctant to be so close once more. Still, she could not reject the Constrictor, could not stamp down on her wish for her own selfish weakness.

Slowly lowering herself, Lakota wrapped herself partially around the little fawn body and couldn't help but laugh. "Who's the little one now, huh Ktulu?" she chortled, fangs gleaming in profound amusement. Lakota had grown used to Ktulu towering over her, had even learned to take comfort in being protected and held by her mate, but it was still amusing. Especially because Ktulu often lovingly teased her for her petite form. Perhaps it would distract the both of them to revert to the easy banter that had first led to their friendship, and founded the base of their relationship.

Her heart swelled when Ktulu's mind conjured a similar idea, and she sighed longingly at the mere idea of her future foals. Their future foals. "Oh, Ktulu. I don't care what they look like or what gender they are, I already love them so much." It was wistful and so full of love it nearly hurt to hear it come from her own mouth. Her tail swished in a relaxed, distracted manner as her heart opened to reveal everything she could wish. "If it were a boy, I'd name him Firenze, or maybe Dante...Nari, D'Angelo..." she sighs them like they're reverent, like she's praying, a future of a potential son. But there was so many other possibilities. Gods, what if they had two?

"If it were a girl, I'd name her Paolina, or Xenia, or Temperance...strong names." They were almost all derived from her own language, from the language her and Alleo and Hana spoke. Had Ktulu ever heard her speak it? Huh. She'd never even bothered to think about that. "The names don't matter to me. Il mio bambino...they will be beautiful. Aodaun and Eytan will play with them and protect them, and we can sleep together by the springs. I can teach them everything I know, and we can show them where we first met. We can watch them grow strong, fight us, find love..." realizing she'd gotten carried away, she cleared her throat softly and looked down at her...er...paws. It was so easy to think of her beautiful future child, to get swept away in everything she wanted to do, to experience. Maybe that was why Ktulu had asked the questions in the first place.

KTULU the CONSTRICTOR
what if this storm ends and leaves us nothing

"Who's the little one now, huh, Ktulu?"

Ktulu's large ears flicked backwards and she fixed Lakota with a glare that, honestly, looked about as threatening as a baby rabbit. "Enjoy it while it lasts." She grumbled, still none too pleased about being so tiny. Being reminded of it by Lakota didn't make her feel any better about her skinny legs or the rest of the frail body she was stuck in. She just needed to keep reminding herself that it was only a matter of time before they were changed back. That and she was bigger than the last shape she had taken. Just not bigger than Lakota who had sharp claws .... and pointy teeth...

No!

It was in an effort to distract herself as well that she asked Lakota about their future children. She listened as Lakota spoke names, though she didn't care for many of them, especially the girl's names. "I like Nari." That much was true. But as for Temperance? Xenia? Paolina? D'Angelo? Ktulu thought those names were very strange even if they weren't any stranger than Hototo or Ranjiri. "What about Chakotay?" She said in an effort to keep their conversation going and, also, keep their stress level down.

"Il mio bambino..."

"What does Il mio bambino mean?" She had never heard Lakota speak in another language. The words felt strange on her lips and she only hoped that she hadn't butchered them too badly. But there was more that Lakota spoke of and Ktulu could imagine them watching over their kids. It was a happily ever after ending that she'd never pictured for her life and it was nice. Really, really nice. She didn't want to picture their future together any other way. "I love you." She whispered as she reached to touch her dark nose to Lakota's cheek.
