Kahlua
May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your day

A tilt of the queen’s head once again placed her confusion on display for all of the world to see, although at this point the whole world seemed to be made only of the newborn and herself. The moment was intimate, frightening, and yet somehow very… soothing. Kahlua’s body was tired, her mind was tired, but the more that she tried to see chains in the grass around her, the more she began to realize that they weren’t there. She could not conjure them because nothing about this child embodied her fears. This newborn was not needy, it did not seem that it would rely on her the way she had imagined. Could it be that her phobia of children had been wrong all along?

Furrowing her brow, the queen was almost ready to delve into the history of the naming tradition when she was stopped short for not the first time in the last few minutes. The male specimen? Her furrow grew deeper. Instantly, her mind went to Kaj, the man who would play the role of father when the Father Earth could not be around. But he was surely not what the newborn meant. And really, it wasn’t confusion about whether she should tell Isopia that she was the daughter of a god or not, but rather the choice of wording. Where did she even learn such things?

“I’m Kahlua,” she started with, not sure where else was appropriate to begin, shifting a few more times but ultimately settling into something of a comfortable position as she continued to watch the grass advance up the limbs of her child. Would it suffocate her, if she stood still too long and let it grow over her nostrils? How would the child sleep, if she could not breathe? A philosophical question for another day, perhaps. It was surely not one the queen was particularly well suited to answer.

“The first born daughters in my family have all had names starting with K.” And though it was Isopia’s family too, it was easy for the queen to distance herself from that realization, in a way. This was almost like having a conversation with a small adult, if not for the gangly limbs and the fact that Isopia had literally just fallen from the Sunshower’s uterus. “I was Krystal Nacht’s firstborn daughter, and she the first daughter of Kalea. And before Kalea there was Kalianna.” Pursing her lips for a moment, she added on, “That’s as far back as I know.” She had never met Kalianna, only heard of her. History before her was long forgotten.

Then there was that other pesky question to answer… “The male specimen is the Earth God.” Using the newborn’s choice of words- the male specimen- also made it easier for the queen to pretend that this wasn’t happening to her. The Earth God wasn’t this child’s father at all, just… just the specimen. Just the donor. “But Kaj leads the Edge with me. He said he would help…” trailing off, the queen specifically avoided saying ‘raise her’. More distancing. Whatever helped her cope. Absently, her eyes turned to the woods, wondering if the king would come, still uncertain if she wanted him there or not.
