who's to know if your soul will fade at all

The coming rains? What could the Earth God possibly mean by that? Was the world to be submerged, drowned, carved and cut and reshaped anew? What might happen to Helovia under the onslaught of sundering tides and vicious waters? Would his home be recognizable, would the mountains bow beneath the pressure of the elements, fold into the earth and crumble away into dust? Roland hated to think of what they might find once they stepped off the boat again, no matter what the God had promised. Where he might once have felt awe and rapture in the company of a deity, he felt only a sickly sort of emptiness, the kind that came with betrayal, with faith lost and foundered upon the shards of a broken trust. The ship truly was a remarkable work of art, and unlike anything the Thief had ever seen before, but he still balked at the thought of stepping foot onto it. He spared little more than a parting glance towards the Earth God before taking in the sight of the ship, rising from the ground like a mountain itself, curving, reaching up towards the sky. His ears swivelled to catch a familiar voice as it called out his name, and he retreated from where he had been tucked away under the shadow of the vessel, hidden from the sun's heat. His gaze settled upon the form of Lena approaching through the crowd, Imogen at her heels. Roland smiled at them both, glad to see the Mender in good health once again, a spirited look in her eyes. Perhaps this impending downpour would not be so disheartening when he had friends at his side. The Thief tilted his head towards her in a brief nod, flattered that she would ask him above all others. "Of course," he responded, gaze flicking down to the kitsune and offering her a crooked grin. It was going to be an interesting ride. (Roland and Lena!) |
