On the hunt for gold. Yippee! Not to mention it was a warm, blue sky day to boot. This trip was turning out to be a little less exciting than he figured it would be. The trio had been trotting across the middle of said gorgeous abyss for a few hours. Resting, munching at will, walking—In that order. His little questing company was a young colt, and a fellow herd mate from the belly of the throat. A herd mare he was resisting upon thanking every few hours. Of course this did give them the opportunity to explore wild territory in fine detail.

“You need to find gold, hidden in the bed of the river in the Thistle Meadow.”

Well, he wondered silently. This was Thistle Meadow, and they were getting close to the streaming river his lord had mentioned. The sounds of predicted flow grew with each pressing step they took. A hot afternoon sun beat across their backs; knees shifting through tall brown grass finally found an exit and came faced with soft river bank. Neck twisted down to quench body of physical thirst. Golden orbs peered into the muddy water while pink tongue lapped away, curious of how difficult it would be to find, ‘gold.’ His lord had said it would be hidden.

Ktulu had agreed to helping Midas with his quest partially because she was beginning to grow stir crazy being cooped up in the Throat and partially because she wanted her son to explore the world under her supervision. She had requested that Midas keep the pace slow because of her poor child's legs and for the most part he had heeded her request. At times she and Hototo did fall behind, but she knew where the Thistle Meadow was. She had practically grown up there with her sister so there was no fear of getting lost.

When they reached the meadow she joined Midas at the stream and lowered head to quench her own thirst. Moments later she raised her head and looked around. "Where is this gold supposed to be?" She asked the stallion. He had shared only a little about his quest, leaving her mostly in the dark about what they were searching for.

In the bed of the river sparkled some small, gold nuggets. They rested deep beneath the water's surface and only glimmered against the grey bed rock when the sun shone. A few fish swam by, but otherwise, the river is undisturbed.

Yellow pits caught sight of flashing hues of yellow beneath the trickling stream, a small smile fashioned itself across his maw. The soft voice of his female friend arose, "Where is this gold supposed to be?" Motioning with twisted neck and lowered skull he responded with lightened tone, “Within this stream,” softly he added, “Look….” Gaze followed each flashing nugget, they bore a dirty a color; not like the glimmering shades that trailed his feathers. Dull hues couldn’t hide an unmistakable shine that was evidently present; surely this was the first of his quest. Now the question was—how much was needed to fill his quarry? Oh, and most importantly; how to carry such treasures.

Foreleg rose with one hoof gently tapping through the water and moving one of the delicate looking stones—the motion stirred water but did little else. Muzzle lowered with a deep inhale filling his lungs, widening his breast; skull fell forward with jaws opening. Feeling the rush of water across the length of face he used lips alone to pull at the stones below. Mouth trailed and rough ivory grasped a few small stones. He turned toward the shore and dropped them onto the bank; turning round Midas repeated this task maybe a dozen or so times. Muzzle dripped and vocals filled air, “Do you think the lord of earth requires more than a few stones?” Midas didn’t want to get too few—or too much; like a foolish colt he had left his masters side without asking further questions.

An idea had already formed for how he was going to carry such precious stones around with him. Medics in the clan had often fashioned bundles of long rod leaves together to make a bundle of sorts. A medium bundle could be carried in his mouth, or along the soft layers of his back were feather met flesh.

Ktulu looked down at the water again when Midas told her to look. At the very bottom she could see gold glinting up at them. Her head lowered until her muzzle was nearly touching the water as she studied it. So all they needed was a few gold nuggets? Or would they have to scour the whole bed of the stream until they had enough?

Midas echoed her thoughts, causing her to lift her head and snort. "The Earth God is mighty." She said. "He will not need an immense amount of gold." Her gaze turned down to the water again, one of her ears tilting toward Midas. There was only one thing left for them to do, really.

The dark mare took a breath then shoved her head under the water, her mouth opening as she scraped at the bottom with her teeth to try and grab some of the gold nuggets in her mouth.

"The Earth God is mighty."

“That he is,” Midas thought. After all, each step of this quest was guided by his lord’s hand. "He will not need an immense amount of gold.” Great! Head turned back toward the water. He wasn’t expecting Ktulu to help, so when she stuck her nose under he glanced over in surprise. Such a good friend. A soft nicker trailed out, fondness and continued appreciation evident in tone.

After several mouthfuls of water were swallowed, and some unwillingly inhaled; the pair managed with combined efforts, to gather a small pile of golden nuggets. Coal splashed chest heaved as a restrained cough threatened to burst past tightly clinched lips. A second before it did, Midas twisted round and spat his bundle onto the ground. Throat rumbles rose forth and a sneeze followed. Facial features twisted, orbs shifted to focus on their, ‘collection.’ Muzzle lowered to knock river stones away from the prize.
They had collected enough.

“I will fly these to the shrine,” Midas murmured quietly, ears swiveling forward to catch any opposition. Withers trembled as the muscles along his wings flexed, they itched to take him sky born, “Be back in a moment,” It wouldn’t take him long to reach his lords monument. Body leaned forward with limbs propelling him out of the water and dry land. Reaching down, jaws opened to receive their work. He rose, with wings fully spread and with a kick in his step Midas took off along the pasture. But after only making it ten or so feet giant wings caught a warm updraft and slung shot him skyward. Orbs scanned the area around them; body circled the grounded pair once before angling to head in the direction of their vein.
