... tomorrow we'll be free

The sun was beating down on the small mare that roamed the Threshold. She was a newcomer, unfamiliar with the land that stretched before her eyes. It looked like a wonderful day, the birds were chirping and there was barely a breeze. A day where one would run around in the meadow, maybe roll a bit, share a day with a loved one perhaps? Well, there was nothing of that sort left for the palomino mare. It had been taken away from her some months ago. Her whole body still felt numb, the pain was just as bad as yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. It seemed like the wound would never close, it constantly bled, but she couldn't feel the liquid running, she was completely numb.

The outside appearance did nothing to suggest what was on the inside. The mare had joined many herds before in her life, she knew the words, knew the method, she knew it all, but she didn't feel it. There was a soft smile on her face, it didn't quite reach her eyes though but was good enough either way. Her steps were soft but not heavy like they felt. Her tail swayed from one side to the other, slowly, rhythmically.

A melody was playing in her head, like every other day. It was soft and sweet but achingly painful. She had never attempted to hum it herself, she wanted to keep it for herself in her mind, the way it was supposed to be, the way she heard it the first and the last time. Her two-colored eye glanced around her, she could only see things on her left so she had to count on her right ear for any danger. The mare was not so sure if danger hid in these places though, it was early morning, the sun was high up in the sky already though. Ísfold could imagine the dangers creeping out at night, it was always the night that caused the damage.

After some minutes of wandering this newly found land the mare came to a halt. The mare had no plans at the moment, she wasn't sure if she would wait here until she spotted another equine or if she would continue on her own. For now though, she would take a break for a moment, fill her stomach a bit before continuing whatever path was presented to her. Her head dipped low and her lips hovered over the grass, soon parting and the mare began to graze.

It is a lovely day and I have devoted it to flight. The weather is perfect for it. Riding a playful breeze the only thing that soars higher than me is my mood.

I may have the wings of an over-sized slighty gawky bird but I wasn't also gifted with a bird's song. So rather than allowing my simple joy to escape in song I hum a little tune as I circle the Threshold. Every so often at the higher points I add in little huffy chirping noises to the humming.

Although repetitive, and not at all complex, I feel a touch of pride in my made up song as it is rather catchy. I only pause my humming and chirps momentarily as I watch an equine pass into the Threshold. Gliding above what I think to be a "her" I change my song to match the rhythm of her gait and swaying tail. Laughing softly at the unknowing dancer I pump my wings and flatten my neck trying to speed ahead of the newcomer.

I land a few lengths in front of her. My new tactic in the Threshold? Grand entrances.

I finish hummimg the last line of my made up song and I sweep into a bow. One wing one wing remains tucked to my side and the other spreads as I kneel.

"Ta-da!" Grinning brightly at the mare I stand back up, "Welcome to Helovia! I am Rei of Dragon's Throat. May I ask who you are?"

I give her a moment to answer while I settle my wings into place and catch my breath.

"Look around you." She had looked to be happy and it was when I caught her I eye that I got a glimpse of sadness. "This moment is one to remember. Take in the sights, smells, and sounds. Today is the beginning of your future. Pretty crazy thought, right?" My own eyes soften as I remember my own arrival into Helovia.

"This place is full of things that you would not believe unless you saw them for yourself." Gently I bump her shoulder. "I know from experience that whatever past brought you to wander here is nothing compared to the possibilities that lay before you."

The fresh taste of the grass filled the mare's mouth, it tasted slightly dry but it was better than what she had been eating for the past months. Even though she had grown up in the mountains and knew well how to scavange food it was still not the best she could have. Though it did seem the best was never meant for her. Maybe for a short while though, which is why she would enjoy what she had this very moment and appriciate it.

Her ears rotate when a sound of flapping wings reaches her ears. The mare did not bother with looking up until there was a thud as whatever creature it was landed in front of her. Ísfold's left eye gazed at the winged equine in front of her, a beautiful one indeed, and if she was right it was a mare like her. A soft smile touched her lips when the mare seemed to kneel, her cheerful appearance and happy words were contagious and for a moment Ísfold allowed joy to seek into her heart.

"Thank you! That was quite the enterance," Ísfold said with a praise in her voice. "My name is Ísfold," she then added with a soft smile and a gaze which could only be seen from her left eye. Her right eye seemed to stare into the abyss.

Her ears perked forward when the spotted equine began to speak again. The way she spoke, the words some inspiring and hopeful for a moment Ísfold actually believed them, though what if it was true? Could she really start over and leave the past behind? Ísfold did not want to leave her past, it was still a part of her, but a painful one, but she hoped she could find something here without feeling guilt. The palomino took a deep breath, her nose fillled with mysterious scents, nature and equine, it was mixed together but made a glorious scent. A genuine smile crossed her lips as she gazed towards Rei. "Helovia sounds like a magical place," Ísfold said, "I am excited to see what it has to offer," she added with a soft voice.

“In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.”
― Michael Jackson

"Thank you, thank you!" I dip into several mini bows to a mock audience. "And thank you m'lady." I laugh and face Ísfold. "Did it all for you, and maybe a bit for my own enjoyment."

A knowing smile spreads across my features as Ísfold mentions her excitement for her time in Helovia. Whenever I had first entered into the Threshold a season or two ago I had been filled with the same feelings; breathless excitement fueled by wide-eyed wonder. Ísfold has no idea of all of the magic that thrives in this land. None have a clue what they are getting into whenever their hooves cross into Helovian borders.

"Ísfold,"My eyes glimmer and widen and if my ears were to stand any more perked they might snap, "I see something almost every day that blows my mind. Sometimes I question the possibility of things that are happening. Even as they take place right before my eyes!" Scrambling I try to bring to mind the most awe inspiring moment during my time as a Helovian. So many tidbits come to mind; some I hesitate to tell her in fear that she may think me to have gone mad.

Taking a deep breath I try to shake off the nervous feeling that envelops me every time that I offer to escort a newcomer into the Throat. "I could show you Helovia better than what I can tell you!" I have to slow my words down or she will never understand me. "You would never believe me if I were to only tell you of all of the happenings in Helovia. What if instead I invite you to my home in the Dragon's Throat? The name is intimidating I suppose, but it is a wonderful place to call home."

When the mare spoke Ísfold's name her focus shifted towards Rei. For a slight moment her mind had wandered off to the moments she was leaving behind, she wasn't ready to let go though, probably never would be. It often hurt her to know she was leaving Hrafn behind and her sister but life goes on and you just have to move with the flow. The spotted mare's eyes were wide and glimmering with excitement and as she explained how wonderful this place was and the opportunities laying around every corner Ísfold couldn't help but get sucked in. It also sounded like a great distraction.

Ísfold's eyes brighten when the mare presents her offer. Being alone in this unfamiliar world did sound intimidating even though it was exciting. She had never traveled long without a companion and now someone had just offered to go around with her. Ísfold was even offered a home, maybe it was time to settle down? The idea played around in her mind and it seemed to warm the mare's heart. One thing that made her hesitate was that it seemed like whoever you met, goodbye was inevitable. Ísfold could however not wallow in self pity all her life. She knew what she had to do. "I would love that, thank you so much for that offer," Ísfold said, her smile that of appreciation and gratitude.
