There was entertainment enough to be found within the Basin at night, when the Thief was restless and sleep was stubbornly evading him. He could stand for hours upon end and observe the reflection of stars in the lake, the shimmering light reflecting off of its mirror-smooth surface. He could be pacified by the entrancing waltz of northern lights from horizon to horizon, bathing in brilliant colour every last patch of snow that had escaped the sun's pressing warmth. Yet after so much had happened, and being given a moment of respite, the Thief's mind would not rest, could not settle. He was not often one for midnight adventures, daring escapades and crusades away from the promise of comfort and protection of their borders. Only as a child had he been so courageous and stupid, so ignorant and blissfully unaware of the dangers that might await him; but Roland strayed from the familiarity of his home under the persistence of a late night wakefulness, an unrest that had burrowed its way into the very marrow of his bones.

He had not expected to return to the ocean again so soon, of his own volition. So soon being many months after the incident, which they had not spoken of since. They had returned to the beach to gather materials for the God of Earth, to prepare the vessel for when the floods came, but had made it as succinct as possible, delving into its rocky shoals for only the briefest of times before hastening back to the waiting ship. Now he walked along the shore under the cover of night. The air carried no hints of the wintry cold that had once laced the waters and winds. Moonlight shone off the sweeping waves, littered the sand with shards of light, reflecting off of every polished stone. It was peaceful, almost, as nightmares can sometimes be. Roland had believed he would look upon the ocean evermore and find it haunting, a ghostly reminder of the fires that had once burned along the shoreline.

Finding a familiar form chest deep in the water, however, was the last thing he expected at such an hour. For a moment the Thief forgot all of his preoccupations in favour of bemusement, discarding his concerns to watch the golden stallion lunging through the waves with some purpose driving his steps. What exactly that might have been, Roland did not know. There was an unfamiliar companion with him, frolicking in the spray like a carefree child, a rack of antlers sitting proudly upon its head. The Thief found himself smiling, head tilted in amusement as he watched, reticent and curious.

After a few moments he moved closer, unwilling to conceal himself any longer. He had not expected, nor had he wanted for company, but there was no harm in making conversation when it had been so long since he'd seen Thranduil last. It was not that he was particularly well acquainted with- or fond of- the stallion, but as they shared the same profession he saw no harm in getting to know him better. If they worked alongside each other in future, they would do well to be on good terms with one another.

The Thief took his time drawing near, only toeing the edge of the water, unwilling to step back in quite yet. He glanced at the shells scattered around his hooves, the washed up twigs and calcified detritus, trinkets from the ocean floor that would be snatched by gulls to weave into their nests, tokens of the sea that had caught their eye. To him, it held none of that beguiling charm. Roland lifted his gaze to regard the distant form of the golden stallion, moonlight pouring off his back, waves frothing around him. "It's been a while," he called out, almost disinterested. He hoped his voice would be heard above the hiss of waves over sand, the rough skip of the summer breeze over the water. "Who's your new friend?"

Push your luck if it makes you a promise
that turns con men honest.
