No Time for Lies and Empty Fights

Much time had been wasted searching for the Diviner of Dragon’s Throat – she was rumoured to wield the magic of the Sun, along with the Forger – though after nearly a week, frustration had well and truly reached its limit. Hector broke into a drumming gallop north along the gravelly desert terrain, determined not to sit idle in waiting while the God of the Sun awaited proof of his capacity to serve the Sultan’s army. It was the task that had taken priority in his mind, and as soon as the moment of freedom arrived (no shift had been scheduled to man the border), the stallion set forth with his eye trained to the north, the mountains which harboured the finest copper Helovia had to offer.

He would have enjoyed the company of the painted filly, but the journey already was expected to take him all of the night and part of the morning beyond, and he could really not afford to be held up.

Enormous wings beat regularly to maintain steady momentum, and he rode the thermals whenever he could to hold high altitude above the land. He travelled swiftly, skilfully, but by the time the rocky, jagged peaks of the mountains grew close, midday had drawn already a thick sweat to stain his rust-red pelt. Fiery eyes spilt down across the landscape below, the steppe beneath with his prized commodity was hiding. Hector was hot and horribly weary after the lengthy journey, part spent beneath the blazing orb. He fell heavily at last upon the snow buried landscape and trembling knees buckled quickly, body plunging eagerly towards the wet, cold blanket. For a long while he rolled, relieved and grateful for the comfort it offered.

Still, he had not long to accomplish the task, and through the early afternoon he chipped and gouged away the frozen mountain with hooves and horn, in a conscientious effort to extract enough copper for the armour he sought. It was gruelling work, hindered by the cruel intensity of the day, and he paused often to lap up the powdery ice or lay in its cooling embrace.

White December

Perhaps she was an addict, the way she craved the snow like clockwork. She would wake in the blistering mornings groaning from sweat, having to force Carl a number of times away from her side, as the companion's wooly coat only added to her dilemma. She had finally had enough, ready to tear out her hair in such agitation, and without waiting for the llama she was heading out to her beloved Steppe. It was like heaven when the cooler breeze pricked her skin, freezing the sweat on her white hide and sending a minor shiver down her spine. Carl lifted chocolate eyes to his forced bonded briefly, registering her emotions before continuing forward, not at all pleased with having to deal with such a tiring journey. Although she had given him chance to rest and catch his breath a few times, they had been brief and rushed by her anxiousness to get to her destination.

As soon as she stopped he flopped down in the snow, ignoring her movement forward a few more steps before she copied his motion. An audible sigh escaped smoky lips, rather feminine for her vocals, and it echoed softly around them. Moments passed before at last she released herself from her euphoria, falling from her crystalline high of cold and ice against matted skin. If she was an addict, she was a rather high functioning one, and she had no intentions of quitting her habit. Her mind was alerted from its mellow world to the sound of digging, causing dials to swiftly flicker in the sound's direction. Before thinking she moved herself around, lifting her massive skull still laced with white powder to investigate the cause of interruption. With fluid and slow movement she led herself closer, calculating in her mind what exactly the noise was. As she moved in closer it became apparent someone was making them, scraping grating her ears as she finally rounded the large boulder to find... well shit.

There he stood before her, copper bodice slicked in sweat from laborious work, hooves and horn working their way into a small section of the mountainside in search of something. Images flashed into her mind: the painted filly, those deep blue crystals thrusting themselves from the dirt, the look of terror in those brilliantly teal eyes. Carl didn't know how to take the sudden onslaught of sorrow and pain that racked his bondmate's body, lifting his head momentarily to glance at where the mare had wandered off to. Soon he was at her side, following her gaze to the hard working brute, then connecting two and two together. Floppy ears flattened upon elongated skull, before a missile was launched in the direction of the hybrid. Carl had made his point very clear to the stranger and December, before walking back to his spot in the snow to rest once again.

The sudden sound jolted the ivory maiden out of her thoughts, feelings, whatever was going on in that head of hers, looking up to see where the assailant's attack had landed. Fortunately it was only on the ground about a foot away from the brute, but nonetheless she stepped forward, eyes suddenly filled with anxiety," I apologize. He hasn't learned his manners yet. He does that when my emotions get too-" she halted her sentencing. Did she really want to so openly admit that whenever he saw him she only thought of pain and rejection? Of how that time in the threshold had royally fucked her so hard that she didn't know how to even begin building new relationships with others out of fear of scaring them off too? Sure, it hadn't been his fault, but he was still a reminder of what she lost, of what she couldn't have because of an accident, of what could have been in her life that maybe would have changed her for the better.

She had no physical or familial investment in the winged child, nothing to tie her as her own or to give her reason to even bring her home. It was all in her mind, the promise she had made to herself that night; that she would protect the scared girl no matter what because she understood, she could relate to the sense of loneliness the splotched girl must have felt during her time in the dark woods. That's what had made her drawn to the teal-eyed girl, and the way she seemed to beg for a sense of belonging. She had found it with this beast, and she couldn't be happier that she did, but inside part of her was still dead, mutilated from the wound the girl had never meant to inflict upon her. If anyone knew how she truly felt, the way her mind worked through about the subject matter, she would probably be locked up, never allowed to see the outside world again. Part of her really didn't care, perhaps it was for the better.

She ignored the cold wind that bit at her side, the chill that stood her hairs on end for she was simply numb, staring with those dark eyes at him, not entirely knowing what to say next. What was it that they had, besides a deep fondness for the girl they had come upon that night; were they similar at all, or was that their only common interest. He had no obligation to offer her anything, to even acknowledge her presence here before him, but she couldn't keep her mind from inquiring, or her voice for that matter," How is she?" Where was she now? Was she safe and warm? Did she have any friends, and did she finally learn how to walk with those silly wings of hers? Was what she avoided adding onto her first simple question. So many things she wanted answers to, all for a foal that wasn't even hers.

No Time for Lies and Empty Fights

A brisk zephyr laced with the bitter chill of snow, alerted the toiling stallion to the arrival of the scarcely familiar shire mare, and his sodden skull lifted from the sludge to view her arrival. Though his fierce tangerine gaze narrowed more out of caution than curiosity, and his nostrils pinched and puffed sharply at the growing taste of her upon the cold air, Hector’s ears were tipped forward enough to alleviate the otherwise unwelcoming expression he had unintentionally adopted. He could easily recall the few times their eyes had fallen upon one another - the Threshold, during the Earth God’s quest - and neither had been terribly encouraging experiences. In fact, it had become quickly apparent that their personalities simply clashed (even despite the wicked influence of one mischievous Boggart)…

Nevertheless, unfortuntely, it seemed that fate again intended for their paths to cross.

A murmur rumbled deep in the cavern of his chest before visible acknowledgement broke the tranquility of the northern steppe. “Afternoon December..." he crooned politely, as un-awkwardly as he could possibly manage, while sinew squirmed apprehensively beneath the glimmering, sweat-drenched pelt. Hector swiftly turned both ear and eye towards his bonded - Veci’s interest had rapidly reached a climax, thoughts spinning with intention - and the stallion made certain to train the creature then, to the spot. Stay put, he instructed firmly, and the Boggart slumped down sullenly; watching and waiting instead.

Horned skull angled afterward to look at the strange animal in the mare’s company. It was peculiar - a stunted horse, with too much hair, a deformed face, and a smugness that set Hector’s consciousness on edge. They were side by side, staring unabashedly his way and he wondered with some reserve (a dash of guilt) if this was December’s substitute for a child. Isara’s decision many months ago had been unfortunate for her - ideal for him, though as he stared candidly at the foal his stomach began to twist beneath waves of nausea. Surely there were less mutant children needing care… he mused grimly, recalling the law of nature - only the fittest survive. He felt almost sorry for this mare; for the babe she had taken in.

Then something more absurd happened…

Did he just…

Veci’s invisible form rose from the snow once more, spurred to life by the potent creature’s rude, crude behaviour. It was intriguing, infuriating, and though he was tempted to retaliate and defend his partner, he held position carefully - a soldier rigid and waiting on the frontline.

Disturbed indeed, but not swayed from nonchalance, Hector realigned his focus onto the pallid mare when she began to speak. Her distress was transparent, written through the pained twitch of her rich eyes, but the copper soldier was little in tune with the feelings and emotions of the complex fairer sex. “Never mind,” he answered carefully, presuming that the actions of her younger was intact the cause of said unease. “Children… they have no filter.” It no more warmed him to refer to the freak-colt as a child of their kind than it did comforting the mare who had been so unjustly hurt by his company previously. His enormous frame swayed in place and he offered a small smile in earnest - even if it was motivated by guilt.

As the wind whipped the silken threads of his shining mane into a frenzy about his regal features, an uncomfortable silence rose between them. The giant was relieved when she spoke again finally, no matter the briefness, and nodded - realising after a moment’s consideration, that it was the pretty paint filly he had left behind she was now referring to. “Isa is quite well,” he offered in short as memory of the ice-spike dulled his tongue - he nodded quickly. “Congratulations,” he offered then, gulping, shifting his eyes beyond December’s form to find the ugly foal again… “So much hair!”
