She had imagined motherhood as death- a trap that she could not escape, a burden that she would be unable to bear. Strangely, she had been proven wrong. Perhaps it was that her child was hardly a child at all. Most days she was a raven, flitting through the trees, a flighty creature that preferred solitude. Kahlua didn’t understand this exactly, being gregarious as she was, but she could appreciate it, in a way. And regardless of that, when her daughter was in her equine form, she would never be mistaken for a newborn. She grew faster and larger than any of the other foals Kahlua had known, perhaps a quirk gifted to her by Father Earth himself. Kahlua had no time for contemplating such oddities, but she appreciated them. Isopia was strong and independent, she did not need the queen to guide her or teach her, did not rely on the Sunshower for anything.

So it was that Kahlua, who had never imagined herself as a mother at all, found herself comfortable with the arrangement that had been struck between she and Father Earth.

As she saw her daughter ahead in the trees, the queen thus happily picked up a trot and approached the girl. She had not found time to speak with the child for some time now and it was only fair that she did afford the girl some time. Noting the glowing acorn around Isopia’s neck, the queen tossed her head slightly, feeling the weight of her own water charm in her mane. Khan had tied it there when she had been gifted, and now a small strand of her mane was permanently damp with the water that leaked from the charm. She didn’t mind- it was a gift from the gods that she would always cherish.

“Hello!” she called happily as she trotted up to her daughter, bouncing as she always did on her striped hooves. “I see your father rewarded you. Did you get a chance to speak with him?” Kahlua did not know if the child had named herself yet, but some part of her was afraid to ask. She had only asked one thing of the child. If she asked and found that the child had not obliged that one small favor… ah, well, there was no point in worrying about it anyways. Smiling contentedly, she slowed to a walk and settled in beside her daughter, proud to walk along beside her. Above them, Khan flew slowly, perhaps guarding or watching, but giving them the space that he was sure they needed.
