The Poisoner

Home. They were finally home.

Violet eyes soaked in the view before her, an oasis before the eyes of a man lost stumbling in the desert for days. It seemed seasons ago she'd stood in the Fields gazing across it, Archibald at her side. Finally she had returned, and though it had changed, had adapted into something she didn't recognize, it was still Lakota's home nonetheless. And she was there to take it back.

Though she was Grey no longer by title, she always would be in her heart. Lakota hadn't found her niche in the Edge, hadn't found peace or titles to fit her. She'd been erased, left behind in the shadows of her mate and her brother. To be standing on the precipice of change, a chance to make things right, was almost all consuming. She trusted Archibald, to lead her into the field safely and with a good head on his shoulders. It made her nervous to know Ktulu was lost to her in the Basin, further lost in a grief Lakota was helpless to fix. Would she be fighting? Would anyone tell Ktulu they intended to invade? Her stomach was in knots, making her dance and shuffle restlessly in place. The new metal upon her brow felt weird no matter how she tried to get used to it, but she was thankful for it nonetheless. It had been quite some time since her last battle, longer still since her last invasion.

A quiet glance over the horizon and she felt her heart race with excitement, a sudden pulsing thud thick in her chest and throat. This could be where she raised her children. The only home she'd ever truly wanted before. She could raise them safe, far from the reaches of the Moon and her unwanted patronage. She who had taken from Lakota her best friend, had shattered her brother into pieces that Lakota could not heal. She'd had to watch as her family fell apart, just as useless as ever. No matter how hard or how diligently she loved them, she could not fix the damage the Goddess had done to their souls. Perhaps this was the first step. Maybe she could help them here.

Except...her hide began to crawl with a sudden plummet of nervousness as she recalled immediately who lay within those jungled borders. A soft whimper caught and died in her throat at the mere notion of facing her big brother on the battlefield. She felt horrifically sick in that moment, jelly knees and terrified. How could she face him? Fight him? Would he fight against her, for the meager home he'd built with his blind mate? Would he understand their reasons behind the invasion?

Before she could stop and think about it, even attempt to work through it, Archibald gave the thunderous call and the earth shook with its passing. Lakota lurched unsteadily into action, fear that had nothing to do with war or death clenching in her belly. The Poisoner had no reason to fear those. But disappointing her fratello? Having to hurt him, really aim to injure, to win? Lakota would rather commit treason or run like a coward than do so. Aodaun nudged into her mind, distracting her from where she was mechanically running across the greenery into the half-dark. His distraction gave her clarity, and she began actively searching for a target.

Kota! The Poisoner stumbled on the thick, unfamiliar foliage, mere dark shapes in the light as Aodaun shot her the alarm. Turning she caught sight of the nearest defender, a faceless foe to turn her fury and desires upon. Nobody would keep her paradise from her, the home of her children and the only place she'd ever loved. With a battle cry that rang in their throats as a combined sound, Lakota and Aodaun sprang for KIARA with claws and hooves outstretched. Lakota ducked her head at the last minute, the horn still unfamiliarly weighted on her brow, intending to scrape into KIARA'S left ribs. Aodaun moved at her side, claws aiming for the lower left foreleg of their chosen prey. Together they descended, a love too strong for their beating hearts driving them onwards with an outlet finally found.
