Scream for Me

Stepping through the fog felt practically comforting. No one ever said that shadows or nighttime were the only ways to hide. You might think that the fog would be suffocating, but instead I find it reviving. The moisture in the air is heavy, and it doesn't surprise me that my coat seems slightly damp. Out of nowhere, a white wolf appears in the dense fog, and between her paws lies an egg. I stop not far off and watch as others gather as well, though their forms are barely visible, and only the ones that are next to him are ones I can clearly make out. I see Colt, my partner in crime, and I deliver her a curt nod with a devilish smirk as well.

I turn my attention back to the white wolf and lower my head to watch her closely. Though I'd much like to gnaw at the nerves of the others, there is something more interesting demanding my attention. She lies upon a moss-covered rock, and after a short while begins to speak. Her first words are a sharp jab at the obvious lack of intelligence of those of us gathered. But instead of taking offense, I cannot help but chuckle. She insists on a game, and green doors begin to materialize out of the fog.

I may have thought this to be a silly exercise, except that it is a mind game, a game of intelligence - and those are my favorite games. The pretty wolf lists out the clues, and it doesn't take me long to understand, though picturing the items in my mind takes me a second longer than if perhaps I had seen it spelled out. I echo what others have already spoken. "It is what they have said. Those with a double letter in the name - a deer, a poodle, a raccoon - can pass through, others cannot." A small sigh passes through my nostrils like a rattle as I express almost silently my disappointment that she has not presented us with something more difficult. "Now please, give us a true mindbender!" My eyes glitter with the possibility of a challenge, and I glance around at the others to see if they are chomping at the bit as I am.
