a light from the shadows shall spring

Mesec was trying to be objective, trying not to let his heart get in the way of his mind and to ignore the way his skin crawled whenever the topic of his mother was brought up. It had been great, for a time, to ignore that part of him - to live in the sun - but he did not begrudge Ampere (too much) for dragging him back into the shadows. It probably wasn’t healthy, ignoring his parents and pretending that everything was fine. Slowly, his ears flicked forward again as she gave her answer. Blurting it out as though she needed to get it all out right away. How long had Ampere been thinking about bringing up this topic?

He reached out now, as he should have done when he first found her tonight, to touch her gently on her neck as her words faded away. The action serving dual intentions: to soothe her impassioned state and to - what? show that he was okay with this topic? Maybe the touch was to soothe both of them.

“I think you underestimate her.” A dry smile and what was - hopefully - a convincingly calm voice though it was hard to feign easy indifference on the subject. “I have no doubt that she’s using this time to her benefit, that she will not be kept out of the game for very long. We’ve seen what it’s like when one god leaves, eventually she’ll be required to return… the others must know that.” The Moon would have them all believe that she was driven by balance, and Ampere was right - without her, there simply was no balance. She was cruel and she was deceitful but the other gods needed her. Helovia needed her.

“What else can we do but wait until she returns?” It was not laziness or indifference behind the question, he really wanted to know if Ampere had an idea to restore his mother to her Goddess station. Mesec was convinced that the Goddess already had her own plan in motion, it hadn’t ever occurred to him that she wouldn’t or that she would need help in gaining freedom. “Petition the other gods to release her?” There wasn’t any hope in his voice at this suggestion, if the other Gods wanted to free her they would and Mesec doubted that trying to convince them would help at all.
