This was the place, you were sure of it. Makeshift shrines dotted the dark rocks, and eerie, electric blue lava was seeping down the side of the volcano below you, a stark contrast to the gray blanket of clouds from which you dropped. Wings flapped silently as you spotted the ledge, before circling once, twice…yes, this was it.

• • • • •

So, the past few months have been…rough. First there was that thing with the wings-and-horns on the beach and the way you kind of totally lost your mind before (surprise, surprise) running away. Then, there was Muriel—that had been a bright spot, you won’t deny it—but then the floating island had spontaneously exploded. And then, while you were looking for her (or let’s be honest, her body, because you’d barely made it out alive), you’d found Bellona, who’d been avoiding you for months. But for some reason, your feelings hadn’t gotten the memo that she just wasn’t that into you, dude, so there you were all of a sudden, trekking after her as the world literally had ended around you…and don’t even get you started on the flood and the time you’d had to spend in that awful rickety boat. Oh, and did you mention that you’d been forced to bunk with your worst enemies? At the time, it had all seemed bearable because of her. Who knew why; what had she ever done for you? Nothing. Yet you would have followed her to the ends of the earth all the same.

Still, you should’ve known better. As soon as the boat and its supernatural captain had dumped you out on terra firma and sent you to repopulate the earth, guess who disappears? It seemed like little Miss Thang had a penchant for heartbreak, because she’d vanished without a trace, and this time, you got the sense that it was for good. You’d seen the way she would stare off into the distance, eyes flashing before stalking off, pacing like some caged animal. She was too wild, her spirit too free to be tied down by an emotion as feeble as lo—no. It had never been love. But it had been just as dangerous, whatever had grown between you. When you’d finally come to your senses and realized that she was gone, you’d seen how dependent you’d become on her, how weak you’d been. Though it pained your most macho of hearts to admit it, you’d been whipped. Your lust had enslaved you to that agile peacock body and unforgiving tongue, and it disgusted you now to think of how you must have trailed in her wake like that shape-shifting dog of hers. You vowed that you wouldn’t let it happen again.

• • • • •

So what were you still doing here, then? You had been on schedule to fly the coop yourself before this whole trainwreck of events, hadn’t you? But the flood had changed everything. This place was full of magic, and you had always accepted it as a state that came with the territory, but that flood had been decidedly freaky. Supernatural, even. You had never been one to believe in anything you couldn’t see, eat, or *ahem* bang, but even you couldn’t ignore the rumors that circulated on board: the ones controlling all this were gods, and the giant you’d glimpsed at the helm was one of them? At first, you’d rolled your eyes; Helovians were strange creatures with stranger customs. But then: there in the dark, amidst the creaking of the wood and the howling of the wind, you’d heard it said that the gods would grant power to those who asked. Of course, it had all been a lot to take in at the time, and you’d been to busy trying to accidentally-on-purpose bump into Bell, but a seed had been planted. And now, with every distraction weeded from your life, it bloomed.

Months later, here you were. If the rumors were true, your life would never be the same.

The GOD of the SUN

Burn the whole world down

The God watched the stallion circling his shine, it was as if the stag was double checking that he had arrived at the correct shrine. It was clear the stallion knew who he was seeking; true, it was not in any way, shape or form worship but as the sun broke over the horizon The God of the Sun chose to appear. At first he was simply nothing, then ethereal beams shone down from the sun itself.

The light grew, all around his shrine was illuminated by the celestial beams that descended from the heavens. They gathered, weaved and bound into each other to create a fire portal in front of the ledge- which The God of The Sun stepped through. As his feet touched the earth the fiery portal behind him burned itself out and gradually vanished into small clouds of smoke. The God stretched his wings to their full breadth before setting his unnerving gaze upon the stallion that had traveled so far to visit him. Tucking his wings against his side the God waited, metallic eyes had become narrowed as he studied his subject, inspecting every thing from his features to the seemingly confused feelings within.

The stallion was a far cry from being new to Helovia but it seemed that he desired little other than a certain mare and a new ability. Something that would most certainly change his life. "So, you come seeking my power." The God finally speaks to the stallion, his voice is rigged with tones of boredom and indifference. It is not a question, he had already dipped into the stallion’s mind and seen his desires- The God was well aware of the stag’s purpose here. "Why?" While The Sun God felt no anger or ill will towards the stallion (in fact he was rather apathetic toward this entire situation), he did wish to know why he should bestow his glory upon the stallion before him. Majestically and powerfully his voice echoes around the veins, as the sound vibrates the blue lava around them begins to spark, bubble and churn through the cracks. It is a spectacular display of beauty and strength. The God however remains in his completely unperturbed state, continuing to watch Gull. The flames around him flickered, their light however never faulted as The God waited.

Now, you’ve seen some pretty weird things here, but nothing, nothing in your time at Helovia comes close to this. Even before your hooves touch rock, the clouds above begin to part, bathing the shrine in light. And then, as you land, the light materializes, spontaneously combusting into a floating ring of flames that singes your whiskers and makes you jump back cursing, precariously close to the ledge. But you do not fall, for you are rooted to the spot as a giant steps out of the flames.

At first, he seems vaguely reminiscent of that—what was his name? Gau-something? –you’d seen on the beach. It must be the flaming wings and the horns, and maybe the size…but if you’d thought Gaucho was huge, he didn’t even come close to the space this creature filled. Not only was he physically large, with a wingspan so vast that it seemed to touch both sides of the horizon, but he had a presence about him that signaled a power that no mere mortal could possibly possess.

Your expression is quite comical as you gaze up at him stupidly, speechless for once, with your own puny wings drooping at your sides. “You’re real,” you breathe without realizing you’re thinking aloud, eyes practically popping out of your head…because let’s be real, even if you’d seen the things that went on here, you hadn’t really expected a god to show up. Heck, you weren’t even religious. Were you supposed to bow or something? Awkwardly backed against the cliff’s edge, you settle for a jerky head lowering, accompanied by what can only be described as a cross between a cough and a squeak. “Um…”

Because what does one say to a god—or if not a god, a creature who could easily barbeque you with a flick of his tail? Oh hello there! So nice of you to drop by! Lovely, er, shrine you’ve got here… No. Mentally, you visualize yourself getting incinerated in a matter of seconds, flesh vanishing in a column of flame until only a charred skeleton stands before the god, grinning blissfully before collapsing into a pile of bones at his feet. Now might be a good time to tread carefully, Gull. As much as life may suck right now, you don’t really have a death wish either.

So there you are, choking on your words, when the god (or whatever he is) must get tired of waiting for you. “So you come seeking my power,” he intones, in a bored voice, piercing golden eyes honing in on you. “Why?” Well, good question sir. So much for small talk, then. “Er…” you begin, unable to meet his gaze no matter how hard you try. “Ah…” Your eyes slide to the lava behind him, which has begun to bubble and boil in a most uncomfortable way. Better get it together, Gull. “Because it’s unfair,” you say finally, tearing your thoughts away from the magma. “Because if I’m going to survive in this place, I deserve a fighting chance.” If everyone else had magic on their side, then why shouldn’t you?

The GOD of the SUN

Burn the whole world down

The God allows Gull time to adjust, clearly the stallion was shocked, baffled that gods where in fact real. A deep majestic laugh rumbles through The Sun God’s chest in response to the stallion’s spoken thoughts. Perhaps this one may interest him, for a short while at least. Ruffling his wings before settling them at his side once more, he waits for the stallion to gather his wits. The God’s eyes are fixed upon the stunned Gull, watching his reaction with a mild interest. Finally his patience expires and The God sighs quietly before speaking up. It is not unusual for The Sun God to be the first speaker, this time he breaks the silence with a question that demands a response from the stag. Hopefully this would spur Gull into action, forcing him to collect his thoughts in order to answer his query.

Finally he is graced with a response, one that causes a brow to arch. It was unexpected, The God smirks silently and repeats the stag’s answer in an amused tone. "Because it is unfair." The god muses for a moment, listening as Gull speaks again. "And what," The God quickly responds peering at Gull with now vague interest, "makes you worthy of this chance?" Many wondered if they where deserving and came to him seeking a way to discover if they where indeed worthy of a magical gift. Smirking to himself he peered into the stallion’s wants, discovering the kind of magic that he would seek from The God. Interesting.

"You believe that magical abilities will help you survive." His deep voice stated. The God pauses and he rolls his shoulders, wondering what gave the stallion the impression others where hunting him. "You must also believe to have made some enemies. Why not seek a herd’s protection?" The question was asked pointedly, the molten eyes of the God burned within their sockets. "Perhaps you could attempt fixing the error of your ways?" A boring way to bring peace into your life but it was effective most of the time. "There are other ways to increase your chance of survival." Taking a step closer he narrowed his eyes at Gull. "Why do you want magic above all these other options?"

Over the history of this land, perhaps it is true that many pilgrims have visited these shrines to beg for blessings and prove their merit to the Helovian gods. But you are not one of them. Certainly, a more devoted follower would be scandalized by your irreverence, but you don’t know any better. It is only a healthy respect for the creature’s flaming body and massive size that keeps your tongue in check, but even then you cannot suppress the feeling of exasperation when the booming voice asks you why you are worthy. Hadn’t you just explained how unfair things were? If worth had anything to do with it, you certainly didn’t understand why the unicorn scum here had been handed the keys to the kingdom.

Luckily for you, the god moves on before you find the words to reply. “You believe that magical abilities will help you survive,” he restates neutrally. You nod impatiently. He continues, guessing that you’ve made some enemies. All right, you’ll give him that. “Why not seek a herd’s protection?” he asks, giving you—wait a second, that is definitely a death glare. You don’t know what you did, but instinctively you shrink back under his gaze. “Perhaps you could attempt fixing the error of your ways?” The error of…how did he know about that? There was no way anyone could…that had to be just a coincidence. “There are other ways to increase your chance of survival,” the god rumbles, stepping closer. There is no more room to back up, and his voice rings like thunder in your ears as he delivers his conclusion: why do you want magic above all else?

But though the god is intimidating, your resolve is strong. To you, the answer is obvious, and you reply without hesitation. “Because the herds here are blind,” you tell him, eyes narrowing at the thought of the vipers in their midst. “They don’t know what’s to come, or they’re idiotic enough to believe that it never will.” Perhaps here, the land was still young, you muse, thinking of the equines that roamed Helovia. In the home you had fled, horses had been nothing but a distant memory, nearly mythological in nature, creatures that had existed once before those with horns had wiped them from the earth. But no one here seemed to understand that. “The unicorns are dangerous, but they live with them,” you go on, nearly beginning to growl as your anger increases. “They eat with them, call them brother and sister—“ you spit the last two words from your mouth with flaming eyes, “even bre—“ But no, here you catch yourself at the last second, remembering the creature’s own horns and wings, and for a moment you are silent, apprehensive. “Joining a herd wouldn’t help me survive,” you finally conclude, refolding ashy wings on your back. “It would only mean my neck gets slit that much sooner.” You would not tie your life to those of your enemies.

“I want magic, or powers, or whatever this stuff is because even though this place is messed up, I want to stay here.” Having magic meant being able to protect yourself, to fight for the ones you loved, past and future.

Having magic meant not feeling so powerless.

The GOD of the SUN

Burn the whole world down

The molten orbs narrowed at the stallion’s exasperation, usually one kept their emotions in check when conversing with a God. Still, the annoying mortal would soon be dealt with and The God of the Sun would be free to return to more pressing matters.
"You seem to make many enemies," The Sun God pondered out loud, wondering if this meant that Gull was dangerous or stupid. Paranoid more likely. The God’s laugher rumbled in his chest and the flames along his body danced with his amusement. Eyeing the mortal, The God of the Sun paused for a moment before he turned his great body out towards The Veins. The land of prayer and devotion. Not too far from them the active volcano spurred out more lava, it rushed down the side before finally resting at the bottom of the huge rock.

The Sun God had to give the mortal credit, he held on to his determination with an iron grip. Listening to the stallions answer, he could not help the sigh that escaped him. Doomsayers came and went all the time. Turning away from the land, The Sun God responded to Gull's statement of danger. "Oh?" Humouring the stallion, he began to question what this great danger was. "Are we under attack?" Allowing the stallion time to think, the Sun God peered into Gull’s soul, searching for his memories and just what it was that haunted him.

Now as Gull spoke, the anger within him grew with every word that he spat. Clearly the stag had a lot of hate growing in him, the heat from this was burning away in his soul. A smile twitched it’s way onto The Sun God’s lips. The further he ranted, the more the words are heaved out of his mouth as if the weight of them has been burdening him for quite a while. Amusement burns in his eyes as suddenly Gull falls silent, clearly feeling apprehensive. As if he would feel insulted by a mortal.

After some unsettled silence between them "I see," was all The God said in response to his rant and concluding statement. Rolling his shoulders the God of the Sun pondered in silence, he turned his golden gaze back out to the veins, the smile still in place.

Finally Gull answered his last question and when he finished the silence settled for a moment longer. It grew between them, The God wanting Gull to feel out of his comfort zone. 'Because even though this place is messed up,' just what had this stallion been up too? "Well you haven’t bored me entirely." Chuckling once The God of The Sun turned back to Gull. "That works in your favour. Still The God was not quite ready to send the mortal on his way. "If you receive this gift," the God began, eyes burning their way into Gull’s soul, "and you find yourself and a lover in a…complicated situation." Pausing, The God allowed the silence to fill their ears before he asked the final question. "Who would be the one you saved with your new found ability?" There wasn't really a right or wrong answer to his question... "And why?"

“…I want to stay here.” As soon as it’s out of your mouth, the declaration surprises even you. Abruptly you fall silent, wondering: why on earth would you want to stay in this upside-down world? You have no ties here; you’re free to come and go as you please. Isn’t this the life you wanted? While you second-guess yourself, the silence between you and the god stretches thin, and you shift your weight, uncomfortable. Does he think you’re lying? Thus far, he has been carefully neutral, but you cannot ignore the flames that he can obviously manipulate, and you’d prefer that Gull Flambé isn’t on the menu tonight.

But no, the more you think about it, you realize that you’re telling the truth. You do want to stay here, powers or no. You won’t let the horned bastards push you out, even if there comes a time that you have to fight to stay. If there’s one thing you are, it’s stubborn, and the thought of your life here as an act of defiance appeals immensely to you. You’ll look danger in the face and spit in its big, stupid, metaphorical eye. No boneheaded Blade Head’s going to keep you from your chance at starting over! Yeah! Taken with yourself, you puff your chest, snorting subconsciously at all of your imagined acts of rebellion.

Just as you’re really starting to feel yourself though, the god interrupts your thoughts with a hypothetical situation of his own. You haven’t bored him completely, he tells you, but how will you use these supposed powers? There is a note of solemnity in his voice as he poses his question: “If you receive this gift, and you find yourself and a lover in a…complicated situation, who would be the one you saved with your newfound ability…and why?” If he intends to hit home, it works, for the question brings you back to earth with the familiar pang of loss. You know who you’d save—how many times have you replayed Her death in your head, wished you could have given Her your strength? And how long did you search for Muriel after the explosion? Perhaps a lover is not the same as a mother, but your loyalty runs the same. You may have failed them both, but the memories haunt you every night.

Though the god may have exposed a more tender side of your heart, the laugh that escapes your lips is short and bitter. You may know who you’d try to save, but given your track record, you think you know how well that would go. But it doesn’t matter. You know better now than to take a lover, and so the situation will remain as the god has framed it: purely hypothetical. “I’d save this so-called lover of mine,” you reply, voice clipped for fear of it breaking. If someone could love you, she’d be worth it. You’ll never verbalize the thought, but if the god chooses to look into your mind, he’ll see. A flash of four pink wings and the whisper of Muriel’s voice are stamped into your memory. “Too bad that it’s too late for that.”

The GOD of the SUN

Burn the whole world down

A short, bitter laugh sounds from the winged stallion that stands before The God but he knows that he’s hit home with his question. A clipped reply. The silence after his final response. The God’s gaze remains trained upon Gull, sizing up the creature that had presented itself to him. Then the God rolled his shoulders and gave him a gentle nod of his great crowned head. "Very well." Once again he peered into the stallion’s soul, seeking out the wishes and desires of Gull. "Before you receive anything remotely magical, we will first discover just how worthy you are." He had just claimed to deserve the God’s gift, now it was time to put action to his words.

Leaning forwards the god breathed on to Gull, bestowing his own gift upon the stallion. "You will experience what your new ability will be able able of." Laughing the God of the Sun took a few steps back and looked down at the stallion, if he was weak he would not survive the path he had just been set upon. "When it is over, return to me and we will discuss your ability." For now the God was bored of him and this conversation and it was time for him to leave. There was a burst of flame as the God burned away into nothing. Not a single trace of him remained, there was simply Gull talking to no one.

Gull will experience the effects of smoke inhalation first hand! The effects are a cough, shortness of breath, hoarseness, headache, and acute mental status changes. Each condition should be experienced in at least one completed thread, the longer the thread is the worse his condition grows and each condition will follow directly after another.
Return to The Sun God once you have completed this quest!
