Htar was watching water drip from the rock overhead when a figure emerged from the tree line. He watched her prance about, completely unperturbed by the cascading rainfall. She even seemed to enjoy it.
A small sound came from behind him, his ear flicked back from the filly to catch it. The rabbits had reluctantly accepted his nonthreatening presence, but the young newcomer was frightening them once more. He arched his neck and drew himself to his full height, while sweeping the damp fan of his tail back to shield the little creatures from the filly's prying eyes.
But as she drew closer, the sight of her halted the challenge in his throat. She looked like him. Her antlers were tipped in bright cerulean, matched by a handful of feathers tied to them. Her coat was soaked, but the color of a newborn fawn splashed with white.
She was speaking to him, but he barely heard her. He hadn't seen another antlered horse since leaving his herd, years ago, and he couldn't stop staring. The rabbits were long forgotten behind him. Surely they wouldn’t need protecting from someone so like him.
Tiva, she said.
He bent a knee formally and offered, "My name is Htar."
Htar hesitated drawing himself back up, realizing her wide eyes were silvery and blank. Was she blind? He couldn't imagine that she was, the way she'd woven through the trees without hesitation, even in the lowered visibility brought by the storm.
He thought it too rude to bring it up, and pressed onward with a more pertinent line of questioning. "What is this place? Are there other horses like us here?"
His eagerness was too apparent, and he had to physically draw himself back and take a calming breath. She'd said something polite and neutral, commenting on the weather like it was normal. Perhaps it was here.
"Yes, I've never seen it's equal. I hope the lightning strikes don’t come too near the forest. There are many tall trees that would attract the electricity."
