Since your family has settled in the Falls, you find your exploring territory considerably expanded. You’ve given the streams and precipices a nice preliminary poke-around, but the land is still new enough to you that you don’t realize when you’ve crossed the border into the Wilds. And it is there that you come across the narrow trail to the Heavenly Fields.

At first, the rocky path is of little interest to you. There is no babbling stream nearby nor sign of life ahead, just a thin line of dirt disappearing upwards into the mist. But since there’s not much else at the base of the mountain, you decide to explore, and soon you discover that you’re much higher above ground than you’ve ever been before. Thankfully, it’s too cloudy to look down, for if you had, there’s no telling what you’d have done in the face of the dizzying height. You’d much rather turn around than continue, but there is little room on this section of the trail, and so you have no choice but to press on in the hope that the path will lead downhill eventually.

As it turns out, you have no such luck, but the difficult climb is worth it. Though your skinny chest is heaving as you reach the summit, the sight of the vast field spread out before you still makes you catch your breath in delight. Perhaps it is your mother’s blood and natural instinct, but this wide-open space so close to the sky seems to make your fledgling wings tingle with a yearning to take to the air. One day, you think wistfully.

Perhaps there is a moment of regret, but your melancholy is quickly overcome by the desire to stick your nose into every wildflower in the meadow. Trotting clumsily from blossom to blossom, you sneeze and sniff in turn, running from grumpy bees and chasing the last of summer’s butterflies. It is a prime playground, and you frolic with abandon, reveling in the golden afternoon light. The only thing that could make this better would be a playmate to share it with.
