It was something he hadn't considered before—allegiance theft. And.. damn, it had almost worked, hadn't it? Coming to the Threshold and instead of (or along with) trying to convince newcomers to join you.. his gaze lingered on Rexanna, her delicate black markings, her blue eyes (we're all blue-eyed here)... But of course, every success has to be balanced by a defeat, no?
Not that he could call it defeat, really—it had been a long shot, but that she took it as well as she had was both relieving and made him curious. Then again, what was it she had said about the Basin? You have to fit in.
Had it been like that in the Edge? And when Mauja had been Lord? Had they, whether he knew it or not, kept that air of.. of oppression? Did it affect her? If a position was all she wanted—
They were both itching to leave, to get on with their lives, but he was itching to stay and figure this out—so he made some silent promise that it would take him five years or something to follow up, a promise to seek her out again and see who she was, what she did, what she wanted, what she.. felt.
"Of course," he rumbled, again feeling like someone had surprised him with the natural pace of conversation, eyes drifting from one to the other. "The offer stands, indefinitely. Take care." And then she was gone in the way that only the Threshold can achieve, swallowing you up and merging you with the scenery of pine and things and newcomers and scents. If you tracked someone to the Threshold, you had one hell of a task not to lose them in it.
He peered after her a moment longer, before turning to Tembovu, light and something pleased swimming around his pale irises. Silently he nodded to him before turning west—the way of home—and began their trek.
