and life will never be the same
without you by my side

The days were long, the nights sleepless, but Kaj soldiered on through his constant vigilance uncaring of the havoc it created inside of his body. He could not sleep for fear that Rue would somehow disappear from beneath the tight, protective canopy of his wing. Lost to him once more, a mere taunting memory and reminder of his persistent failure. Both of her and her mother. Though her weight physically was far from substantial, the continued bearing of it across the unforgiving, diverse landscape was hard on his body. Even as aches and pains spread throughout his frame, Kaj never ceased nor faltered. He would return Rue to her mother as speedily as his body could handle. Were he certain she would not fall, he would have flown her the entire way regardless of the length of the journey.

Though she chatted into his ear to pass the time, Kaj did not allow her mood to become too uplifted throughout their travels, always pressing upon her the wrongs she had committed and the worry she had subjected her family to. The Czar would not have her run off again, even if it meant hurting her a little, making her feel guilt and shame for her actions. They were the best teachers after all, and he would utilize them to their fullest capacities if it kept her safe and within the Falls while she was still defenseless. Kaj doubted he would ever stop regarding her as such, and the notion of keeping her border-bound was tempting. Resplendence would likely agree with him, he mused with a great deal of amusement.

By the time the Falls was within sight, Kaj was sore to the very bones of his chest, shoulders aching and pinched with his desperate attempts to keep Rue as comfortable as possible. Though he allowed her to walk whenever she found herself in need of expending energy (lest she drive him mad, too), most often he carried her, longer strides consuming more ground than his shortened ones could offer when he waited on her. The sooner she was within the borders, the sooner she was safe. Home.

Crossing them felt like a revelation, even when there was still some traveling to do. Resplendence had set up shop with great expediency, and Kaj was already aware of where he needed to go to find her. It was the first place he'd memorized, with how often he visited his gentle sister. Especially in the wake of Rue's (and Quilyan's, again) disappearance. They'd needed the support of one another, and both had been silently aware of it. They hadn't falsely comforted one another with words of hope. But Kaj finally had the evidence to secure it.

"Aardbei!" he called into the coven she'd claimed, her tent aloft and little furrows prepped for gardening. "Come quickly, zus!" He waited until he was sure she was approaching, and slowly knelt down in the grass, as fluid as he could manage to make it easier for his tiny passenger. Kaj made sure to clear any tiny flailing hooves as he awaited Rue's departure, standing and rolling his aching shoulders as he kept his eyes on where Resplendence was sure to be emerging. As she came into sight his eyes softened, wing descending to urge Rue forward from behind with an encouraging bump. Displaying her proudly. Perhaps Resplendence could finally stop crying.

"I found her," he whispered, just loud enough for the brindled mare to hear, but incapable of anything more. It was still an emotional reunion for him as well.

Resplendence
it's what you feel but can't articulate outloud

Resplendence had been pacing back and forth. Quilyan was gone - for now she was assuming that he was searching relentlessly for their daughter, who had managed to sneak past Apollo during the invasion. Kaj had gone off, patrolling the lands and searching for Rue as well. And no one was back. Nightmares flooded her brain, and little sleep was coming across her brain. When she did sleep, it was restless, and only for short periods of time. Not nearly enough to sustain her should anything actually happen. The way she moved, the way she spoke… if anyone who didn't know what was going on saw her they would think she was near the brink of death. But, if they knew her and the terrors of her past they would know it was simply the lack of sleep.

She had tried herbs, to numb her mind just enough to allow her to sleep - but it would still never be for long enough. And, with it now weeks after the invasion it was definitely beginning to take a toll on her frame. For the past few hours she had been hiding beneath her canopy - frame uselessly collapsed against the ground, back pressed up against her glass herb box and curtains closed to keep as much light out as possible. It was Valiance who moved first - who heard the foreign call that only came from Kaj's lips, and then the call to come quickly. He shot forth from Resplendence's side and toward the call immediately - her collapsed frame moving slightly and her eyes blinking open uncertainly. It was only when Valiance flashed the image of Kaj and… Rue! Valiance clicked, swooping in front of Kaj to alert him that he'd grab Resplendence before careening back toward her.

She clambered to her feet with the confirmation coming from Valiance. "Kaj has Rue. Come! Come quickly!" Her steps were uneven, but still sure as she cantered forward. As she arrived Valiance swooped back down moving immediately toward Kaj, with the instruction to begin to knead at Kaj's shoulders, which he had already been rolling in an attempt to loosen. There was pride etched in the lines of his face, eyes soft as he whispered that he had found Rue.

"Kaj! I can't thank you enough!" she chokes out, eyes locking with his as she slams to a halt - frame swaying awkwardly as muscles shake. Yeah. She probably needed healing but, she was a masochist so obviously she hadn't any care when it came to ensuring she was fine (regardless of the bickering Valiance gave her). Then, she turns her attention immediately to Rue. She was thin, far malnourished, but alive. She calls forth what was left of her energy and covers her daughter in vines, trying to heal whatever sickness wasn't allowing her daughter's frame to gain the nutrition it needed. Still, she knew that it would take a few weeks before she looked normal again.

But, there wasn't a "I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE ALIVE" coming from Resplendence's mouth as she moved in toward her daughter. Ears were pinned, eyes narrowed as she nips toward her child. "I told you to stay with Apollo," she says, eerily calm. "I told you not to leave, but you clearly disobeyed me." It was that voice that only mothers or girlfriends can manage to perfect, the one that clearly shows you are in trouble without ever raising their voice or sounding harsh. Yeah, the one where you know you're in for it. "Do you know how much pain you put us through? Do you understand how much danger you put yourself in?" Her voice was so quiet, no one else would hear her chastising her child. "You will not be leaving these borders for a long while now, Ruta. And if you even so much as attempt to sneak past the border I can and will make this worse."

Inside, her heart was swelling, breaking, tearing. Her nightmare's were not coming to fruition, but if her daughter knew of the pain of the lost twins, of her lost mate then she would understand why she couldn't bear to lose her. Outside, though, she stood strong as steel (okay, maybe not strong as steel, she still looked like she could be snapped in half with her weak body trembling due to lack of sleep - but she still had that motherly look of disapproval).

Rue

Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.

-Anne Frank

On the trip here Rue had mostly slept and chattered on Kaj's back, except when he'd let her down to do lady things(Mamma said peeing wasn't nice, but she heard other kids say that so... she didn't quite understand). However Unca had been... angry most of the trip, so after about halfway she gave up on talking, instead watching their surroundings with a drowsy-sort of wonder in between naps. She didn't really recognize anything, but that was okay, Unca was with her so wherever they were going would be safe and Mamma would be there and Pappa and all would be well.

Oh, she was wrong.

Unca let her down, and Rue stood on shaky legs before she regained her balance, stretching after so long upon her godfather's back. Red caught her eye, and the girl looked up with an eager squeal as Valiance swooped overhead, the filly rearing up towards her mother's companion with excitement. Valiance meant Mamma was nearby, which meant food and family and warmth and safety an- Mamma appeared. Rue whinnied happily, stumbling towards her mother, only pausing when strange plants covered her, restoring energy she had lost stumbling in the dark, searching for them. However the plants didn't stop Rue long, and she took a step forward, eyes bright and face beaming with utter joy.

That shattered when Resplendence's ears pinned back, her eyes narrowed and she took a step towards Rue that just bled anger. Rue's own ears pinned back, the flowers in her mane snapping shut into tight buds, rapidly shifting from their joyous gold to terrified yellow, confused navy blue, then to a dark, indeterminable color that seemed a mix of the last two shades. Her Mamma's words were quiet, but they were hissed out in a way that had Rue frozen in place, head lowering with each scolding word. Why was her dam so angry? Unca had already laid into her, already told her how bad she had been and Rue had swore again and again to never do it again(well at least next time not get lost). So to return to Res's anger just puzzled the filly to the point that her thoughts froze, gaze locked on Res's hooves. Slowly she looked back up when Mamma used her full name, ears pinning back so far she thought they'd vanish into her neck.

"I'ust wanted to help..." She said quietly, finally. Her stomach hurt, her chest hurt, and all she wanted to do was press against Resplendence and suckle until she burst and sleep, but she didn't move, frozen in place, her little legs locked up. First Unca's anger, now Mamma's... to her brain it was all too confusing, too wrong. Never had Mamma gotten angry, never had she taken that tone with Rue. Unca was always telling Rue to behave in some way or another, so that hadn't been as much of a downright shock as Res's scolding had been. "I'm sorry." Rue said quietly, but still didn't move, but her gaze slowly lifted back up to Res's face, her flowers unfurling just the slightest bit, flecks of hopeful rose barely coloring the petals before they flared a bright cherry red.

She didn't care about leaving the borders(this was a new place, which meant she'd be plenty occupied for some time), or about the fact that Mamma's stuff was here and not at home, or really that Res had been angry at her. No, all that began to vanish as the girl took a step towards Res, lips trembling. She missed her dam, missed her. That step broke whatever paralysis shock had placed upon Rue, and in a rush of white and cream she ran to her mother, pressing herself against her dam's legs, cheek rubbing up against Res's shoulder as the filly did her best to envelop herself around her mother, faint whimpers in her throat, a giveaway to the tears that threatened to spill over. "Not go again. Too dark, too scary and hungry and cold and and and-" Her voice stumbled, not knowing the words to describe the fear and desperation that had forced the child to keep moving, to keep wandering until she'd find her mother.
