Merikh prowled ahead of the mare as they crossed the meadow. It had only been a few days to a week, maybe, since she had successfully bonded to the cougar and already his form was changing. Rather than looking gaunt and weak the cougar was building lean muscle. It helped that he had finally left the desert that everyone liked to call the Dragon's Throat in favor of her. She could take him where prey was plentiful. Dried blood caked her hooves and scarred forelegs from the animals she had slain to help feed the cougar to build his strength. She would not be bonded to something weak and if the cougar proved to be weak even with her aid she would kill him herself.

She watched as the cougar dropped down to his belly, nearly disappearing in the tall grass before stalking forward, his tail twitching as he moved. Histe stopped, her ears tilted forward and her eyes scanning the meadow until she spotted the deer that had caught the cougar's attention. The mare cocked her right hip so that her hoof rested on its tip as she watched the scene unfold just as she had since bonding with Merikh.

The wind was in Merikh's favor as he approached the deer and, unsuspecting, it lowered its head to graze. The cougar's tanned body had since disappeared in the swaying grass that was beginning to brown with the anticipation of Frostfall. Suddenly the deer's head jerked up, its eyes wide as it looked around, but it was already too late. Merikh exploded from the grass in front of the deer and with a frightened bleat it tried to turn. Tried to escape.

Strong jaws closed on the deer's throat, crushing its windpipe. Claws slashed at its shoulders and legs, making blood spurt from a severed artery. The sheer amount of blood pouring from the deer made Histe's heart race, not with fear or disgust, but with the desire to cause as much pain as Merikh was.

"Do it."

The voices had been surprisingly quiet for the past few days, much to Histe's surprise. Her mother's voice was welcome now, however. The mare strode forward easily, passing the bloodied grass and Merikh who began to pull the deer in the direction she was walking. Rather abruptly the tall grass disappeared and was replaced by a river bank. "Eat now." Merikh said in her head, to which Histe nodded subtly before lowering her head to drink. There was nothing quite like the sound of ripping flesh and cracking bones to make a morning anymore peaceful.

After all you fell in love with death

The smell of freshly spilled blood was all too familiar. As a colt, the sickly, irony aroma had been branded into his young mind. Many of his years had been spent in a roguish haze, fighting, training, almost blindly, searching for the one who had attacked him as a boy. One day, he'd realized it was futile, the beast was probably no more than a ghost now. Only a wandering wraith in his memories. The soldier glided above the meadow's expanse, looking for the source of the scent. It didn't take long to find it.

Bronze pools grew wide. In the meadow, a tawny lion was devouring the corpse of an unlucky deer. It was an unsettling sight, to say the least. More unsettling, though, was the equine mare grazing obviously close to the cat. Too close not to notice it. No, they must be bonded. Like the small dragons that flew with so many here. A mountain lion was a far cry from a dragon, though. Slowly, Leander let himself drift to the ground. Mahogany wings remained tensed, ready to take right back to the sky if the fawn feline became hostile. Best be careful. he advised himself. Not that the cat would be foolish enough to take on something as large as him. At least he didn't think so, but the primal instinct to be cautious around such a predator was inherent. "Hello, miss. Quite a sidekick you've got there." The palomino's deep tones were warm as usual. He studied the dame's oddly marked pelt. Black lines traced her slender bodice - this sort of coloration was new to his eyes. It added even more mystery to the girl's appearance.

"Someone's coming." Huinne's voice echoed quietly in the mare's head.

"I know. I hear them." She could smell him, too. Pegasus. Her tail slapped against her flanks as she lifted her head and glared at the stallion as he swooped down to land in the grass. Merikh's enthusiastic feeding stopped as he looked at the pegasus stud. A warning growl rumbled in his chest before he went back to ripping chunks of flesh from the deer's carcass.

Histe turned to face the stallion when he finally spoke, he pale eyes sweeping over his frame before she dawned a very unimpressed expression. Merikh stood and abandoned the deer as he stalked toward his bonded. In one quick leap he landed on her back and stood facing Leander, his amber eyes narrowed and his face bloody.

"He is no sidekick." She corrected harshly, to which Merikh growled his agreement. "He is my partner and it will do you well to remember that."

Both the mare and her cat seemed to be looking daggers at him. He'd been finding too many hostile girls lately, for some reason. Something must have happened to make someone so callous and threatening. Even the attack he'd suffered as a colt left him with an anger that he'd fed off of for many years. It was almost as if he had needed to let it out. But this mare had become irritated out of thin air. He had obviously not meant the word sidekick in a derogatory way, if anything he had given her a compliment. Being wary of the pair was starting to seem like an even better idea now. Though his wings and legs itched to launch back into the air, Leander held his ground. He'd encountered worse things than a mountain lion in his lifetime, after all. Still, there was something different about these two.

"I didn't mean that in an offensive way. Your companion is obviously very capable." He spoke, voice effortlessly masking the slight unease he felt. He could leave the ground at any second if he chose, but maybe the mare was not as mad as she seemed. Then again, maybe she was. Bronze orbs widened slightly as the puma jumped upon the girl's back, perching itself and staring at him. It almost seemed as if the feline was trying to frighten him. Fortunately, the golden stag wasn't about to give it the satisfaction. "My name is Leander." Deep chords offered, not that it would mean much to the striped mistress.

"He is frightened." Her mother's voice sounded gleeful that it had taken so very little to put the sky rat on edge. I would be the only time she ever heard her mother's voice sound the way it did. Too bad it was echoing in her head and was a far cry from being real.

The stallion backtracked rather quickly, saying that he didn't mean offense and that her companion was very capable. "You have no idea." She purred in response. On her back Merikh's lips pulled back, his teeth flashing, in what she would equate to nothing more than a grin. Through their shared mental link Merikh shared with her the images of a horse he'd felled with his clan before they had bonded. The amount of blood and the carnivorous way they had devoured what had been their only meal in nearly a month sent shivers down the mare's back. The big cat chuffed then jumped down into the grass and began to circle around the pegasus.

My name is Leander.

"Histe and Merikh." she said even though she wasn't one for formalities. She honestly didn't care one way or another if he knew her name or not. "Big ass." Merikh suddenly said. "Lots of meat. Eat for week." Histe barked out a laugh in response to Merikh's observation then wondered how the stallion would feel if he knew that the big cat was interested in making a meal out of him. Not thrilled, she knew, but his escape would be a fun game, wouldn't it?

The striped mare then began to circle around the stallion in the opposite direction the cat had gone. "I wonder." She began. "How far a bird can fly when you rip out a few feathers."

After all you fell in love with death

Suddenly, the seeping realization that something was not right here seemed to flood him. It was not that he was afraid of the girl, nor her companion, but it was beginning to seem that the mare had more than one screw loose in her pretty little head. Bonding with a predator was understandable. But the strange, dark lyrics of the brindle lacked any apprehension. It was as if she herself had the mind of a bloodthirsty lion. As he mused, the sandy feline bared it's fangs. No, this was not good.

Suddenly the pair were circling him, like a couple of vultures waiting to swoop down on a rotting carcass. Sooty ears flattened, the hairs along his spine tingled. With one easy beat of massive wings, and a hard push with all four limbs, he thrust himself vertically into the air. The sun kissed brute rose straight up, unwilling to leap over the heads of either Histe or Merikh. Should either of the two actually decide to make a grab after him, they would be met with adept, stomping iron hooves, though maybe taking a few strands of feathered hair or flesh off with them. "Farther than a girl and her cat can run." He replied, a twisted grin on his velvets. That was enough of being grounded with lunatics. When he had drifted far enough up to feel safe from any jumping attackers, he glanced back down to them. "I must take my leave of you, Histe and Merikh. I have more important battles to fight, than to lose any feathers to you today." He almost wished the ruddy harlot some sanity as he left, but it would have done no good. Once one had lost their marbles, they did not usually ever find them again.

[ooc: If Histe or Merikh try to attack Leander as he leaves, I will post again relaying his actions ;) If not, he has flown off.]
