Shadows fall behind her

Sky turned her muzzle to the shining sun, a cold wind cut through her silky charcoal locks as her bouncy trot rustled through the thick layer of leaves on the forest floor. Oh what a day this was! The sun was shining brightly on the late autumn scene, brightening up the many brown hues, and causing the leaves that were left on the trees to almost glow when they caught the yellow rays.

She planted her back feet into the soft ground before she trampled through a skinny stream of water. She bowed her head and lipped the small crisp water, forelock and mane falling over her eyes in the swift movement. She paused before bringing her crown up again. Nostrils flared sniffing the ground around her. Dirt and leaves swirled around in rhythmic puffs as she brought in all scents around her. Eyes flickered with worry for a moment as she smelled many different strange smells. Many horses have come through here. There are also several that are consistent.

Sky slowly craned her neck back and ears swiveled around searching for the sudden panther that must be hiding and ready to pounce on her. Something skittered by, violently breaking her wonderful silence and she nearly jumped out of her skin. Ears pricked and nose snorting, she balked at the spot the noise was made. Wide eyes followed the little red squirrel bounding up a nearby tree. A light airy whicker left her flared nose, as she made careful steps forward, resuming her journey.

She started to analyze the area around her now, the bouncy mare now more careful and wary. She must be entering into some sort of herd lands. A place that must not be so bad if so many others came here before her. Her elders told her she must journey out, find others, 'fulfill her prophecy.' What prophecy was that? What was she meant for? What could she ever offer the world...how could she ever become a great queen like her mother and bring greatness back to her old home? How could she ever be as strong and brave as her father?...when she never even had the chance to know them. She looked up to the clear sky, eyes catching the weak suns rays and turning them into bright amber pools. A small question slipped up to the heavens 'are you watching over me?'

Tucking his wings close the yearling slipped between the trees with ease thanks to the skill he had learned while living in his first home. The trees of the Edge had always been a complicated mess to navigate through but he had eventually mastered it with the time he had spent there. Moving to the Falls had been hard on each and everyone of them but especially those who knew nothing else. Overall the colt was still undecided whether or not he liked his new home but for his mother's sake he would at least give it a chance.

Shuffling through the undergrowth it was hard not to notice that the trees had begun to shed their leaves in preparation for the season ahead. It was hard to believe that it had been almost a year since he had last seen his brother. No one had found his body so he would keep holding on to the chance that one day he might be reunited with his twin. It would be a happy moment for their family and one that he felt they both deserved after all the stuff that had happened. Smiling at the memory of them all together he tried to push away the reality of their situation to live in the past if only for a few moments.

A few minutes passed in silence as the hybrid wandered alone with his thoughts until something caught his eye. A flash of red darted across his path as a loud rustling sounded to the right of him. The red flash he managed to pick out as a squirrel bustling around erratically but the other was still unknown to him. Stopping dead in his tracks he lifted his head to the wind trying to figure out what might lay somewhere up ahead. Many scents littered the threshold's forest but it was the strongest that peaked his interest. A mare...who was not from around here, maybe she would want to be friends! Flicking his tail out in anticipation the colt picked up a slow methodical trot being careful not to trip on any logs or vines.

Blue eyes focused upon the stranger as he approached slowing his pace only when within earshot of her. From what he could tell she was anything but relaxed here in this new place so it would likely be good not to send her off running before he could even speak. A soft wicker sounded from his throat as he drew near hoping that the girl wouldn't spook at his presence. "Hello?" Stopping a few meters away he regarded the mare with curiosity. Where had she come from? Her smell was nothing like any he had met around here before so she must have come from somewhere else. Clearing his throat with slight hesitation he managed to speak once more. "Are you lost? Ummm I mean...uhh.. Can I help you find anything?"

Sky sighed wistfully, dipping her muzzle back down as she continued to walk through the trees, feet gracefully lifting through the leaves and above the tree's roots. She meandered along, carefully, ears swiveling around taking in the new sounds, eyes slightly wide taking in the new sights. A cold gust blew past her, causing her to catch her breath for a moment and her muscles to want to come alive and jump at will. She stood steady for a moment, attempting to absorb the energy. Leaning back slightly on her haunches, she was about to straighten and once again leap off when a soft nicker floated to her.

She froze in place, like a terrified bunny, when the young winged colt entered into her sight. Sky jumped in place, front legs sprawled out like a dog anxious to play. She had never seen a creature like him! While she heard the hello, she could only take in his magnificent sight. Those GOLDEN wings! Those piercing blue eyes, at the moment looking curiously at her. At her....

His words echoed in her mind a few times before she registered them, then she jumped up again standing upright. She exhaled a breath she didn't realize she was holding in and smiled. She then brought her lips back together, strangers don't smile at each other do they? That would be odd. Did he think she was odd? Then she realized there had been quite a few moments of silence that passed without her answering him yet.

"Hello!" She managed to say confidently, with a nice even warm tone.
She carefully walked a few steps towards him, neck arched high, ears perked and alert.
She thought for a moment on her reply, and became slightly lost in thought about her answer as she began to speak "Well I might be lost, but if I have no particular destination in mind. So, then I wouldn't be? But..." then she shook her solid, but refined head. With a small laugh, she looked into his eyes again.

"Maybe you could help me." A smile crept onto her lips once again, without her noticing this time.

"Um, where are we?" she asked another small laugh escaping her again. Her nerves were jumping and bounding in her body. The nervous laughter wanted to burst right out of her. She was so nervous and excited to find another equid, yet she never expected this amazing winged colt. He seemed friendly and part of her just wanted to jump up and down and gallop around with him. The other part was very very anxious and worried what this world will have in store for her.

Everyone that the colt had met so far in the threshold had been unique in their own way. Thankfully none had been mean or nasty but he knew it was only a matter of time until one of those came along. Maybe even Levex might show back up here one day, he could only hope. What would his brother look like now? Would he be able to recognize him still? Would he know who he was? It would be strange to see him after all this time but surely he could recognize his own brother. After all they had been together inside mom for awhile they had to know each other!

Watching his newest friend with curiosity he couldn't help but wonder what was going through her mind. His first impression was that she was scared but it took a couple moments for that fear to morph into something else he couldn't quite recognize. At least at the end of whatever thought was going through her mind he recognized the smile crossing her maw, that was a relief for sure. Taking a few steps closer he couldn't help but return her warm smile as words finally caressed his ears. Good she was talking! That is a good sign. Thinking a moment over her rather different way of looking at things he expressed his own thoughts on the matter. "Even if you don't have a destination in mind I would think not knowing the area would still make you lost but you never know." He replied with a chuckle all in good humor. He couldn't help that his mind thought about all the possibilities it was just the way it worked.

Shuffling his wings slightly upon his back to a more comfortable position he spoke once more. "This is Helovia, well technically we are in the threshold but it is a part of Helovia." Hopefully this answer didn't confuse the mare considering there was times that he confused himself. "My name is Aeolus, what is yours?"

"That's very true!" Sky nodded at the colts ramblings back to her. She liked him. His mind seemed to work in a spider web of ideas just like hers. There was so much to process and so much to think about, she wondered how others didn't get lost in their own heads like she did. Didn't they wonder? Did they already know things she didn't, therefore did not have to wonder? Or try and figure things out? Did she miss out on something?

While she missed out on knowing her wonderful parents, she considered herself lucky. She had gotten to be raised by four guardians. That's way more than others got. A little frown befell her features. She still felt a little void in her heart though, one that could never be filled.

Her head bobbed again in surprise when the colt spoke again. How silly of her, she wandered off again in her own head. He was so kind and patient for a young one. She shifted in place as his large wings moved about his back. It was going to take her awhile to get used to the strange appendages. While beautiful, they were alien to her and made her nervous too.
Her smiled twisted into that of a perplexed one at his explanation of their whereabouts. Heloooovia she dragged out the name in her mind. It sounded nice enough. When he introduced himself, a bright smile returned and she bounced in place then closed the rest of the distance between them.

Sky gently tipped her maw towards his, breathing gently and returned the sentiment. "My name is Sky, it's nice to run into you Aeolus."
For the first time in their encounter, she felt her muscles relax, letting her sink right into her comfortable place next to her new friend Aeolus. Sky's neck craned back up, ear forward but no longer on alert.

"If this is just the threshold, where do you reside? What made you come here today?" The questions sounding like and old friends conversation, rather than prying for information. Her amber eyes sparkled in the suns warm setting rays, as she felt the chill of night slowly begin to brush her coat.

Musing over the mare's name in his head it took a couple moments before he decided that he liked that name. It was simple, easy to say and was just pretty. Storing it away he knew that it was one name he would remember along with all the other names he had met so far, well at least most of them. Some of the longer names were harder to remember like that strange pegasus he had met from the Throat that he had thought might have been his father. Now the more he thought of the idea the more ridiculous it sounded to him. There was no way that he could be his father considering he looked nothing like either him or his brother. Mother was white though so how did that work considering his coat was an odd greyish black colour that kept getting lighter as he grew. It was best not to worry about that all he knew was that mother was mother and no one could change that.

Reaching out with delight to bump his nose against Sky's he turned to motion in the direction of home. "I live in a place called the Hidden Falls. It's in that direction." He explained pointing his muzzle out only to hesitate. Wait...was that the right direction? South...? Maybe... damnit no... Turning back the other way he redirected his muzzle to point east feeling rather embarrassed to have gotten the directions mixed up already. "It's actually that way... We used to live over there but we just moved to another place." He tried to explain trying to take things in stride and not sound like a fool.

Laughing at himself he pranced forward a couple of steps before turning back to Sky. "I could take you there if you wanted to come along. You could stay for awhile and see if you like it. The idea of showing someone the way was like an adventure of some strange proportion like when Spice and himself had become pirates on the boat. Come to think of it... what had happened to Spice in the last couple weeks? He hadn't seen her around when he had been exploring perhaps he needed to go pay her a visit sometime soon. "The Hidden Fall's has lots of neat places to see and there are lots of waterfalls. I think you would like it. If you want to come that is?" He questioned eagerly wanting to show his new friend a home where she would be welcome.
