The dark blue mare was headed south. Stark against the frozen landscape, her midnight form seemed just as out of place as she felt. Still alone, she used her solitary time to not only look for a cave to provide shelter in the bitter Frostfall, but to also familiarize herself to her new homeland. The unicorn mare had picked her way slowly around the frozen lake, making sure to not traverse over the thin ice. What a joke, she had thought to herself, A newcomer finding a new home, only to disappear and be found come the thaw in Birdsong. Despite her current concern, she did enjoy the view. Perhaps a cave with a lake view would make living in a cave more enjoyable.

With prime real estate chosen, she decided she would iron out the details later. Opening up her stride, she took off at a canter. Cloven hooves dug into the permafrost, and her white mane fluttered in her self-made breeze. She missed her daily runs before her forced exile. She could cover miles before the soreness in her muscles would force her to turn back. Now the aches in her body, the protruding edges of her bones, the months of malnourishment, had warped her endurance to the point where she had almost forgotten her abilities. But that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy her moment of remembrance.

She rounded a bend of pines, and nearly leapt out of her skin. Skidding to a halt, her stormy eyes widened in a moment of fear as she saw a massive, ominous figure towering in the distance before her. Her sides heaved with her panting breaths, and her ears twitched, listening for any noise or movement to validate her fears. But the beast maintained stationary, looming, non-threatening. She began to slowly advance, and the beast became clearer. She scoffed, and then a rough sigh slipped from her lips. The beast she saw was nothing but the sentinels that guarded the entrance to the Basin. She had forgotten they existed, which was an admittedly ridiculous thing to forget.

She trotted towards them, finally reaching the base of one. The equine creature was covered in a shining layer of frost, icicles forming a frozen beard off the head of the creature. The metal creaked under its own weight and the added weight winter had placed on it. The eerie noise filled the midnight mare's ears. She examined the sentinel, standing a ways from it, her head tipped gently to the side. Soft tendrils of breath rose from her nose. She wondered why a land would need such machinery, and couldn't even imagine what they looked like in action.
