‘Don’t leave…’ The implications behind the words permeate your skin. “Why should I stay?” But you already have the answer. Your aching, confused heart longing for him, for the way it feels to be near him, you can only blink, your brows furrowing with the uncertainty you have never known before, and do not know what to do with. You would run, but just the thought of leaving him tears at your heart, roots your feet into place. You would follow common sense, that these things do not just happen in an instant, but yet it did. It is to him you look, searching for answers that you know he does not have, for an inkling of solidity, something to grasp on to. “Caleb,” You begin again, this time just a little surer of yourself. “I don’t even know you,” Even as the words escape you, a feeble protest, your last efforts to guard your heart; you know that this does not matter. However foolish, however wrong, you cannot help but feel like you know some part of him that words could never express, that years of searching would never reveal. And so, you relent, a girl consumed. You do not notice the change within him, the roughness of his feathered tail whipping in the dark. You are too burnt, too fixated on the feelings rushing through you. “But this,” you pause, slowly closing the distance that all at once felt like nothing at all and yet much too much, your nose moving to press against his shoulder before the rest of your body follows, wanting nothing more than to be engulfed, despite the fear still screaming in the back of your mind.
