Birds chirped quietly as Ithran trotted slowly through the forest. The past several days of travel had been easier than they had been since winter began. Ever since he'd entered this forest, he'd been letting himself take it easy, starting later and turning in for the night far earlier. He hadn't seen any signs of the inhabitants of this land yet, but it couldn't be long before he ran into someone.

The forest around him was mostly pine trees, with streams running through it at fairly regular intervals, their edges frozen by the cold. Despite the cover of winter, it was rich in animal life, almost teeming with foxes and squirrels, badgers and raccoons. He had even caught sight of a bear once, a few days back, though he'd not tried to investigate it.

He picked up speed as he caught the sound of a stream a distance ahead. He jumped these whenever possible, to avoid wetting his legs, and he had to move quickly to get up the speed he needed to jump, something he wasn't very good at.

The tall brown stallion slowed suddenly, raising his head and looking around. Something about the forest had changed. It was subtle, but definitely there. The air, crisp and chill with winter's tang, felt slightly different here, colder but somehow no more uncomfortable. He took a step forward, then another. The feeling dissipated as he walked, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he had just entered someplace that was unlike any other he'd traveled in.

A kiss with a fist is better than none

The Sunspear would not have usually taken the road south on foot; she often felt she was a creature of the sky more than of the earth, but she had little choice in the depths of winter. This far north the open sky at her preferred altitude would have her frozen solid in an hour so it was the forrest paths of the Threshold that she traveled on now. Perhaps when she was a bit closer to the Throat she and her companion could take to the air again, but there were miles to go before that point.

She moved through the trees a steady pace, not exerting unnecessary energy, but still eager to reach her home as soon as possible. Held tightly to her sides, her wings acted as a bit of insulation and she took comfort in the ever-warm spot between her wings where the eagle Gwaihir nestled. It was he who first spotted the stallion, sharp eyes picking up his movement through the trees while Meg had only been focused on plowing the course strait ahead of her. “Stranger.” Gwaihir prodded through their bond, “Over there.” He used a gentle tap of a talon on her back to indicate direction and Meg turned her head to see. “Better say hello then, I suppose.” she replied, letting out a small chuckle. The eagle was not one would call sociable and she could almost feel him rolling his eyes at the back of her head.

A sharp angle in her path took her in the stranger’s direction and she picked up a trot in order to catch up with his long strides. The warrior in her was quick to size him up, noting size an build was second nature. He far outstripped her in terms of weight class, but confident as she saw in her ability to outrun, or at the very least, outfly him, the Sunspear approached him boldly, calling out in a jovial manner. “Hello there, you look new to these woods.” It was only a guess, but she knew the odds favored a new comer to Helovia when wandering this pass. She stopped at an easy distance and gave an amiable grin. From his perch on her shoulder, the eagle straightened up and gave his wings an irritated tussle before fixing his permanent golden glare on the stranger.

Ithran heard the newcomer before he saw her, the sound of twigs snapping and snow crunching as she walked setting him on guard. His ears snapped to alert as he turned to see a bay mare, large wings folded to her sides, approaching him at an angle. She was smaller than he, but had a commanding presence that made him, if not wary, certainly more alert. She was surely a leader.

"Hello there, you look new to these woods."

Her tone was friendly enough, and he let out a breath, his ears relaxing into a more neutral position as he processed what she had said. Was it really that obvious?
He studied her more carefully as he considered his response. You could tell a great deal about a person from their appearance, and this mare was no exception. Something in the way in which she carried herself made her seem a leader, and a powerful one. Not a person to offend, not without good reason. Her brown head was held high and her wings folded neatly at her sides. He'd not had many dealings with pegasi before, but unlike some he'd met, he had no issue with those who flew the skies.

"Yes, ma'm." He said, using a formal address that seemed appropriate, at least until he could find out exactly what position she held here. "Does it show that much?" He laughed softly. "I suppose it would, considering I don't even know where exactly I am. Could you tell me what lands these are called? I've been traveling for some time and haven't met anyone in nearly a week. Until yourself, that is."

He twitched his skin and moved a step to the side to shake off the snow beginning to collect on his back. As he moved, he saw a great eagle resting on her back. It was watching him, golden eyes unblinking. He bowed his head to it. If this was the lady's companion, he had no desire to offend the bird.

OOC: Hey! I'm so sorry for the late reply, I didn't see that you'd replied until today!

Edgar flipped over on the ground, exposing his belly and talons to Elsa while hissing. Apparently this was his genius idea of a defense if he ever got separated from Elsa. She just rolled her eyes, kicking him gently with her hoof to flip him over back onto his talons. Then she gently nipped his back for extra measure to get him moving, and hopefully, thinking like an actual smart bird. "Edgar? Please. You can't get mad at me for helping. If you stand like that, you're going to be some predators roast dinner." She glared at him pointedly, as he flapped his wings in annoyance. Elsa could sit here forever trying to teach a bird, but she decided there were better things to do than wait around for him.

So she took off towards the Threshold. It was an easy time filler, and could never be considered unproductive. Not to mention, Elsa was the self-proclaimed chauffeur of the Threshold. Either they came with her, or went their separate ways, but this is how Elsa kept up with who was entering the land. It was nice to know somewhat about those who may end up working against you, that is, if they don't follow you home. Edgar grouched from behind, staying solidly put as he watched his bonded walk out into the horizon. "Come on mopey bird," she called out from behind. Unsurprisingly, the cocky bird caught up, and settled grumpily upon her rump. With a smirk, they entered the treeline, prepared for the daily grind.

After a bit of walking, they caught the sound of distant voices. They were too far out of earshot to hear, so Elsa approached cautiously. It wasn't until she saw an unfamiliar mare and stallion that she walked up with confidence. She had heard the last part of the stallions words, and nodded politely before beginning. "You're in the land of Helovia." She said quickly, glancing over to the mare to see if she had anything to add. Elsa was assuming the mare was here for recruiting anyways, because she smelled of Helovia. "My name is Elsa, by the way. Warrior of the World's Edge. If it is a home you are in search of, I'd be more than happy to escort you to the Edge." Edgar then loudly peeped from her back, flailing wildly to get some attention. "And that is Edgar," she finished, smirking.

A kiss with a fist is better than none

The strange replied quite formally, but that didn’t bother Meg. She might not be overflowing with manners but she appreciated them in strangers.  It was to his credit that she started off with a little joke  and she mirrored his laugh with a chuckle of her own. She well remembered how out o place she had been when Gaucho had found her here years ago. Even Gwaihir was thoroughly satisfied, in his own disdainful way, with the stranger’s nod and let his gaze drift. Noticing this little interaction, Meg chuckled. “You’ll have to forgive Gwaihir, he’s young and not well practiced in manners.”The stallion had started a short thread of familiar questions but before Megaera could reply the approach of another had her head turning.

The white mare approached confidently and the Sunspear noticed she had her own avian companion on her back as well. For a moment Megaera though she might have found two potential new recruits but the mare had the smell of Helovia and was quick to confirm that by injecting herself into the conversation. There was something about the mare Meg felt she should know so she kept a curious eye on her as she announced the land of Helovia to the newcomer. The mare, Elsa, continued on and the flicker of recognition cam to Meg. She might have seen this mare from far off but it was the name and the her that did it. Ampere had reported on the Edge’s appointments so Elsa was not just a warrior but the Edge’s commander under Torleik and Mauja.

The Sunspear nodded at Elsa’s introduction before turning her head back to the stallion to offer her own name. “She’s quite right, this is Helovia. There are four claimed lands here, one in each direction and plenty of places in-between. My name is Megaera, Sultana of Dragon’s Throat in the south. The Edge,” (She motioned her muzzle toward Elsa) “is to the West. The Hidden Falls and Aurora Basin are both north of here.” She sent a grin at the stranger, “You’re also welcome in the Throat is you prefer a warmer climate.” All the while she was speaking to the two horses, Gwaihir had his own case to make. His golden gaze had been glued to the noisy antics of the zephyr. Though the white bird might have outranked in in both type and age, the young eagle already had the attitude of a crotchety old man. Outrages by the zephyrs ridiculous display, he clicked his beak angrily and then sat still, perched strait and tall, in order to demonstrate how to act with proper decorum.
