Someone reaching for me now
Through the dark, reaching for me now
You need someone to hear you when you sigh...
Someone to love you more than I

Where had she been? In the catacombs of her mind, in the nooks of the land, waiting until the pain in her heart had succumbed to the resolve in her head and she could walk forward again. Ghost was a silent creature, so the hurt from the loss of her crown was just as silent, but no less than it should be. It was annoying, sad, liberating and left her simply confused as to which way really was forward. It made her think that perhaps, if she stumbled in a rather sketchy diagonal line towards what she thought she wanted, then maybe the result would be the straightforward route to happiness. Of course, she knew better by now that it wasn’t that simple. She had wandered neither here nor there, not really wanting to commit to anything more than her own life and that of her wolf, who was becoming rather big in both body and mouth. He couldn’t speak much; it was limited to a couple of words, but enough that they communicated better the usual barkneigh?. Their conversations consisted of things like “eat this?” or “run here?” to which Ghost usually responded with a firm “no” and left him to his business. However, they were both getting restless and there was only so much wandering one could do before they began to wear new paths into the ground.

So Ghost found herself ambling south and into the uncomfortable warmth, she was a creature of cold, but more interesting things lie down here. The north was full of misery and defeat, the further south she got the more she could forget the bitter, begrudging north.

On her travels she had found a pocket watch with interesting capabilities for if she so desired the Victorian timekeeper would morph itself into a full piece of leather armour that fastened around her body. The only downside was that the little watch weighed like a suit of armour, luckily it wasn’t made of metal, but it was heavy enough for her to look lopsided whilst walking. It was even stranger and quite difficult to fly with, which made her swap between walking and flying regularly.

She walked to the southern ocean and flew across to stand on the borders of the Throat.

Ghost didn’t quite know why she wanted to return here or even why she considered bartering after staying here. It was warm and dry and entirely not the kind of place she thought she would end up. Perhaps that was why, because it was unlikely and Ghost liked the unlikely. She remembered her time spent serving Seele and how enjoyable it had been, her heart ached for that opportunity again. Maybe she wouldn’t find it here, but she wasn’t going to find it hiding away in the shadows either.

The Cadaverous stood on the Dragons border, across the water from the mainland and waited for one of them to spot her.

Daily patrols had been increased as of late with all the new horses unleashed into the midsts of Helovia from the rifts the gods were dragging back. She wasn't sure how she felt about the aliens. They looked like horses, mostly, but they were very strange and their histories were unknown to her but filled with corrupt gods and corrupt lands. She was also on the look out for more rifts to open up, and could do that best int he air. She was torn between wanting to stay and guard the herd, and wanting to go scout all of Helovia, which she knew was impossible.

Then of course there was the diseases to consider. The boils had come, seemingly from the Blood Falls. She'd briefly gotten it during the battle with the Wolf, but it had also been healed. Another disease was around though, she could only assume from the Green Labyrinth. The healers weren't always a direct cure, but she wondered if they had some kind of protocol to keep the disease from needlessly spreading. What were Megaera and Gaucho going to do or say about all this? She was acting as best she could as Gladiator and Chancellor, but the herd was not hers to govern and she needed the government now when times were so tense and unpredictable.

It was amid this array of thinking that Ampere noticed a figure standing on the off border. Great she thought, just what they needed, someone knocking. Tucking her wings Ampere flew down towards the mare, who upon nearing she learned she recognized, but couldn't recall her name. The mare had wings, so at least was respectable enough to wait. She had no obvious signs of illness, but Ampere was still cautious, not yet landing but instead flying above in circles.

"Are you infected?" she asked tersely.

Fantöme slid down from her rump and landed in a heap on the sandy floor that was accompanied by a grimace from Ghost. Wolves were meant to be quite graceful weren’t they? The banshee often thought that was surely myth as the wolf cast about their surroundings, taking in the desert like landscape with a curl of his lips ”here?” he asked, his childlike tones sounding slightly disappointed. ”Yes here” Ghost replied with a sigh. He’d get used to it, that was, if they accepted them anyway. Perhaps they would both have to go back north, but the sprite wasn’t about to give up without trying. It was then that her shaggy friend cast his gaze sharply upwards and Ghost followed with her own dark eyes cast in the shadows of a frown. Who was that? She recognized her vaguely; the striking blue against her dark frame reminded her of the mare that had accompanied Gaucho that day a few seasons ago, the one who bickered with him. Ghost laughed shortly, but was cut off by her question.

What? Infection?

What did she mean? The term made her think back to the time the wraiths had invaded, but she didn’t look like a wraith. Dumbfounded, Ghost looked at her own body with a frown, finding nothing alarmingly out of order before observing Fantöme who also looked the same as usual.

”No, although I do not know about any outbreak of any affliction” she replied, quite honest on her breathy vocals. It made her wonder if there was a plague of some sort hanging around? Great! Another reason to never leave the far corners of the land. "Are you? Should I be worried?" She asked of the blue marked mare with a raised brow. Maybe she shouldn’t have come here at all if they were dealing with an outbreak of disease. "I came with a request to serve your herd, but if you’re all about to drop dead then…” she shuffled back a little, caution entering her gaze as she watched the sentry who had spotted her from above.

Ampere got a good look at her as she moved around. There were no apparent bloody boils or black goo, but who knew what she could be hiding - maybe she had tail stank or nipple rot? Still, Ampere thought suspiciously as she settled down to land finally, all the infected so far had been obviously sick, and this mare seemed to match her words.

At her own inquiry Ampere snorted, both dismissive and annoyed. What right did Ghost have to question her when this was where she lived? The strange times had set Ampere on edge more than usual, but she managed to remain civil when she spoke, though it lacked it's usual casual charm and playful mischief. There was no sunlight these days for her, just storms as far as the eye could see, and then some.

"I'm well, but a good deal of the realm isn't." Her wings folded tightly against her back, tense like her muscles and her mind. "The gods have been coming back one by one, and with them they've brought new lands, wrestled from a place called The Rift." Brought was perhaps an understatement, more like conquered, except it wasn't the Gods alone rising in victory, but all of them - Helovia. "Nothing comes easy though, so some aliens from the other side come through with them, and a pissed off god that oversaw the land, and apparently, disease too." Ampere titled her head quizzically, assessing Ghost who certainly bore the appearance of an Outcast. This information was of little value to Ampere, so easy to come by there was no point in not sharing, but she wondered in tense times like this what Ghost could give her.

"Time and Moon have both come back now, we suspect the Sun and the Earth will have similar events. Both times we've killed the other gods." Now that was some news. Before now Ampere had never known Gods could die, and now that she did, she was more than eager to shed their heavenly blood, and not just from the corrupted veins of the Rift gods. Dreams of ending the companion enslavement the Earth forced upon Helovia, could it finally be attainable?

"We're too strong to drop dead," Ampere responded proudly, a hint of a smile tugging at a corner of her lips. "It isn't easy though, and with promise fo more fighting, what are you good for?"

Disease was a word Ghost never wanted associated with her and she bared the blue mares scrutiny. Yet, in return the sprite narrowed her eyes to give her own inspection, following the lightening bolts that boldly marked her fur and checking for discrepancies or abnormalities. Happy for now, Ghost awaited some sort of approval or explanation for such a greeting, or perhaps it was a normal thing in the Dragons Throat to ask after ones health first before even saying hello. Still, it was a bit unnerving to say the least. The sprite didn’t really notice the slight change in tone when finally her greeter spoke, but her interest perked to the information in her words.

A rift? Aliens? Disease? Other Gods? New Lands?

The banshee didn’t bother to hide her bafflement, it was a baffling thing, but somehow not quite that surprising for the ever unsettled Helovia. Was this some sort of invasion or an attempt at one? Perhaps, once she was done haggling here, she should seek out one of these new lands for herself, although the threat of disease was enough to make her think twice about the matter. "Is there a cure for these diseases?" She asked, had the Gods come back only to infect the whole place? Still, at least it seemed like there wasn’t quite a full scale foreign invasion of weird Gods and wacky diseases yet.

Ghost held back a snort to the blue’s proud proclamation not wanting to offend, she knew nothing of this herd, treading dangerous waters on its borders was probably not the wisest move.

The sprite raised her head to the final question and reached for her confidence that had once never existed "my name is Ghost and I’m a trained spy, though currently I have nothing to spy on" she shrugged with a hint of humour, whether the mare believed her or not was up to her. The Cadaverous thought a moment on the blue’s question before continuing "I’m not a soldier, if that it what you want, though I can fight should I have to" there was no point trying to big up a quality she did not possess, although she had the armour to play the role.

"I came here once to warn you of the island in the sky, I come again now to ask to serve you" Ghost felt a former Czarina should probably feel embarrassed to ask such things, but the young sprite didn’t. Instead she felt anticipation and longing, she had been an outcast with no purpose for far too long. Still, if she was unwanted here, the sprite would return to the Wilds to roam again. "Even if that means going into uncharted territory" she offered, thinking back to the rifts.

"Somehow, but I'm not sure what. In the last fight mine went away, but the newest one only seems to be spreading," Ampere answered honestly. "The healers are hard at work, I suspect we'll know more soon." Though, in truth, the healers seemed just as lost, which was frightening really.

As Ghost went on to share her value, Ampere's ears leaned forward, attentive and interested. She more than likely wasn't going to turn this mare away, but still it was nice to see how someone prized themselves. Though, Ampere was getting a stronger and stronger feeling that she recognized this mare from something before.
"We're all soldiers, we just go by different names," Ampere murmured with a rough grin growing on her face. Life makes survivalists out of all of us. You're only alive because you've been fighting; the moment you stop, you die. "We can always use spies though. I never see our current ones, whether that's because their good at their job or lazy I can't quite determine."

"Aha!" Ampere exclaimed as Ghost shared their past meeting. "I thought you were familiar." Again she proffered a wide smile, the hard edges of her gone away now that no disease or angry god seemed to be on Ghost;s tail. "I appreciated your warning then, and I look forward to what other information you'll have to share in the future. C'mon, uncharted territory awaits us all, whether due to gods or mortals."

Lifting her wings Ampere readied to escort Ghost across and into her new home.
"Welcome, sister."

She nodded along; growing increasingly concerned about the current outbreak, but said nothing more of it. There was little Ghost could do and she would have to hope that the healers of the Dragons Throat found an answer soon. She tried to let it roll to the back of her mind for now, the sprite had had enough of disease talk, the more they spoke about it the more she felt itchy in paranoia.

A smile tugged onto her lips when Ampere spoke again, finding she quite agreed with her when it came to everyone being a warrior "perhaps I can unearth these spies" she said with a chuckle "and answer your question for you". Spies shouldn’t be too quiet after all; Ghost always thought that such roles should be both noiseless and noisy with one never quite knowing where the noise was coming from. A complete absence altogether was rather worrying. Still, she didn’t know a thing about the herd yet, so she reserved her judgement for now until she understood matters better. "Who should I be reporting to? For spying duties that is” her curious voice asked, having a name and somewhere to go was at least something to start with.

Her smile remained when Ampere exclaimed and Ghost was happy to be remembered; at least the blue mare hadn’t completely forgotten her even if their meeting was a very brief one. The banshee took up the offer and began to walk forward, wolf in tow, into her new home "thank you for accepting, I hope I can serve our family well" she embraced the word family, a word that was once attributed to a different set of faces, now changed to accommodate the desert land; a new family. She hoped that with this new direction there would also come a purpose, away from the forlorn wandering that had left her so lost and desolate.

"Who rules our herd? Do they or we have goals … Philosophies?" If Ghost remembered correctly, Gaucho was the Sultan here the last time she came, though politics and hierarchy were funny things that often changed. It was hard to word her question; however, when she took up the mantle of Hidden Falls Spy she had been apart of the Asylum that had aims and specific targets. Perhaps the current crisis concerning evil Gods and diseases were the main tasks of the Dragons Throat right now, it would make sense, but the banshee wanted to know if there was anything else before she went stumbling into meet and greets without an ounce of knowledge.

"Toes not to step on ... Alliances to honour?" her voice trailed off, she could have gone on with a list of questions. Well, one couldn't be a good spy if one didn't even know anything about the home they lived in. At least, that was Ghost's thoughts.

HEART SICK_AND EYES FILLED UP WITH BLUE

At Ghost's acceptance, or at least that's what Ampere was taking her questions to be, Ampere turned towards the pillar they stood near. She had and ear and eye cocked back, still attentive to the new spy and the wolf at her side that required the use of this bridge (would a pegasus need a key because their bonded could not cross? Unbelievable...). While Ghost queried Ampere's key drifted out with her magic, slipping against the pillar which in turn caused flaming wings to don on all of them. Effortlessly they would drift across the sea to the desert island.

"There's keys for the bridge," Ampere began by way of explanation. "Given to those who are head of their ranks and accept members, and for those of the herd who cannot physically cross otherwise." Ampere's gaze drifted to the wolf. "You'll report to Essetia. She wrestled the title from Bucephalus the Morningstar, I've no idea how the two have been getting along since. You've also got Amaris, Misael, and Destry among your ranks." Ampere had seen all of them, but knew little of them - she only even really knew their names and rank because of her own.

"Gaucho the Wildfire and Megaera the Sunspear are our sultan and sultana. I'm Ampere, the Mother of Companions, their Chancellor and Gladiator." She smiled, trying to keep the conversation light even if it was heavy with names and titles. "Goals, philosophies... we just want to keep this herd, our family, strong and safe. If everyone does their jobs and supports each other, we've little need of anything else." Ampere had lots of philosophies, but Ghost's question tickled a new string inside Ampere. What exactly did Gaucho and Megaera want? "It's why we have this island now. Gaucho asked it of the Sun God, and together we removed the land bridge that connected it. Now, no one gets in or out without a key, or wings, and even so our patrols always see." Ampere spoke with a touch of pride. She might still not have agreed with exploding themselves into an island, but it had done better than she originally expected, and they were rather safe.

"We're in good terms with the Falls. Last I heard we're having a truce with the Basin, but we'll see what happens. The Edge remains, quiet and solitary." Her tone steadily dropped with each herd she spoke of, particularly the Edge. She was none too fond of their leads, though it was hardly her place to decide.

"You position suits you," Ampere said as an aside, grinning broadly as they neared the end of their flaming trip. She asked a lot of questions, good questions, things most everyone never bothered to know much less think to wonder of.

Ghost hmm, someone Ampere would have to pay attention to.

A bridge?

Ghost had thought to fly across with her own wings, without giving a thought to those who could not fly and Fantôme was still young enough to be carried, but her gaze followed Ampere’s to the wolf on the ground. She frowned and then shrugged; it was a problem she didn’t think to consider until now. "Impressive" she murmured at the fiery wings and motioned to her wolf to take advantage of them. He wasn’t quite sure at first; wolves weren’t meant to fly after all and least of all with wings made of fire. He gave Ghost a glance that spoke volumes of his displeasure but the banshee simply shrugged. "It’s not right" he complained and Ghost snorted, nodding to the wings with more urgency. "A lot of things aren't right" she replied, her gaze boring into him.

He surrendered in the end and took the fiery voyage.

"I can carry him if I need to, but he won’t be that small forever. That and-" she broke off, lifting her right wing up "you wouldn’t believe how heavy this watch is" she mulled, displeasure clear in her voice.

Her attention was swayed quite easily to a different topic then by the mention of a familiar name. Surprise marked her features as Essetia was named as her superior and a wry laugh breezily left her lips. How intricate and ironic fate was. The mare that had once served her, now stood above her, but Ghost had known Essetia and had known her ability. Her surprise quickly changed to a gentle fond smile; it wasn’t all that disconcerting, Essetia was a good spy. "Essetia… I would have thought her a good choice. I knew her once, she was an excellent spy" the sprite shrugged. She knew nothing of the mare now of course, Ghost hadn’t seen her since the Basin had stolen her from the Hidden Falls and, in the process, lost Midas. She could be anyone now after all of that.

There were familiar and unfamiliar names after that, it seemed Gaucho was still the Sultan though she had never heard of Megaera and Ampere she had already known of briefly from before. They carried titles; much like she, and with each Ghost would try and form an image of them. The two leaders sounded militaristic, fire and spear, whilst the blue mare’s sounded… odd. Mother of Companions?  Had she some strange way with companions? Baffled, her gaze automatically went to Fantôme before it trailed back to Ampere. Did she just like companions that much? Did she run a daycare or something? A legendary one at that. She thought then that maybe it wasn’t quite so literal and probably had a completely different meaning.

"Clever, an island is easier to defend, I suppose one of my jobs is to guard these keys too…" it wasn’t really a question, more of a thought said out loud, as if she was writing a list in her head of things to remember. If an invading force did manage to procure a key then an island could easily become a cage. It made her a little uneasy "is the bridge the only way in and out? If something happens to it, those who can’t fly would be trapped" unless they took a risk and swam of course, a back door always made Ghost feel better. Not that it mattered to her, she had wings she could simply fly away, but it niggled at her a little. "Too bad it doesn’t stop disease" she snorted, that would be something.

She swallowed the urge to wrinkle her nose at the name Falls, her annoyance was not completely resolved and she nodded with constraint, half wishing it was the opposite. The sprite ignored it however and smiled at Ampere "thank you" she curtsied. "I was ignorant of such information once, I never asked the important questions and others were hurt because of it" she thought back to the loss of the Hidden Falls and those members she failed to protect.

"A mistake I won’t make again" she concluded.
