I have loved the stars too fondly || To be fearful of the night

Night painted the sky above the meadow. An owl called out in the distance, and a bullfrog seemed to call out his reply with deep croaks. The stars were crisp in the sky, some twinkling softly. Perhaps a star being born, or one fizzling out. Who knows?

Below the inky black, a unicorn stood in solitude. Looking as if she were carved from the very sky she examined, Ki’irha felt at home beneath the midnight. She looked upwards, silver eyes mapping the constellations. Her mother, during her childhood, had taught her some of the names. Great mares and stallions and monsters, charted to live forever in the sky. A chilled nighttime spring breeze tousled her snow white banner. The grass here, though thinned and only just beginning to regrow, still had enough length to sweep against her legs. It was muddy here, much different than the Basin. There, the ground was still frozen. Despite her dislike for the mud, she was enjoying the warmness that was here compared to her home.

The cobalt unicorn mare was here on business. As corporal, as a warrior for the Basin, she was patrolling the area. She was alone, and didn’t mind, though she also would enjoy conversation. But instead, she was content with listening to the babbling river that cut deep into the meadow, and the animals who only came out when the sun disappeared. She dropped her head, cutting her gaze off of the stars and instead at the meadow before her. She had miscalculated her timing, and did not expect to find anyone here during the evening.

The warrior girl seemed to float across the flat as she made her way across it. She was slight and lean, but it was deceiving. Beneath her thin frame was a powerful set of muscles, and the knowledge to use them. She was like a viper – beautiful and sleek and venomous and deadly. She worked the meadow for an hour. She wound gracefully through the trees that surrounded the open pasture, and attempted to learn any dangerous holes or dips that marred the seemingly peaceful scape. She wade into the river, checking the speed of its current and its depths. Nothing seemed odd, or out of the ordinary. There wasn’t much to do or see or patrol.

Dipping her head low, she began to graze. The grass here was sweet. Small flowers furled into their buds tasted just as lush as they did during the day when they were in bloom. Her leonine tail twitched, curling around her hind leg. She frequently lifted her head up to survey the area, look for any newcomers emerging from the darkness. The moon had started to rise, its light rushing through the meadow and illuminating the night. Previously she would have been nearly impossible to see, but now the white specks in her coat seemed to glow like stars, and her mane became vivid in its whiteness.

It was just her and the moon. The night, and its daughter.
