Every time I almost die, I feel so alive. Why would I ever want to be more careful?
This was not the common cold.
The blue girl made her way along, slowly and painstakingly. She dragged her cloven hooves, unable to lift her feet properly. After her run-in with the unicorns in the Ancient Rotunda, she had found herself becoming more and more ill. She attempted to convince herself that this was simply a cold, an unpleasant bug that would work its way out of her system. But she was incorrect. She felt flushed, like her blood was molten, coursing fever throughout her body. She had been able to suppress the coughing up until this point, but found herself hacking every time she pushed herself too hard. Black had begun to ooze from the corners of her mouth, and tear stains ran down her face. Cotton was in her lungs, making each breath harder and harder.
The disease had only just started, and was only going to get worse. She didn’t know where she was going, but somehow ended up here, in a corner of the world new and just as dangerous as the virus that had settled into her body. Her eyes were dull, missing their typical sharpness. She cast them up, and saw a gathering.
Curiosity urged her forwards. She was sure to keep her distance, keeping a wide girth between her and the collection of bodies, trying to keep what she had to herself. If she hadn’t been so ill, she would have been amazed. Before her stood a creature of light and fire. She had never seen a creature so exceptional, so beautiful. She lifted her head, as heavy as it felt, and craned her neck to get a better look. She had never seen a god before. She watched him move gently, purposefully, and fire and light ripped through thin air. A gaping hole opened up, and the god looked on expectantly, as if waiting for something to emerge. The starry mare sneezed, black ooze splattering the ground. She shifted her weight back and forth, the dull pain of her injured leg sending soft throbs through the muscle. She couldn’t breathe through her nose, as her sinuses were congested with the black, so instead she breathed sharply through her mouth.
This was not going to be a good day.
