Ophelia the Forsaken
Home had been a brief but welcome reprieve, though it did not mend the wounds this rift had put between herself and Torleik. She still felt the lingering fingers of anger clench her gut at how he had spoken to her, but it was strangled and tempered by the guilt of knowing that her life was no longer wholly her own. His thoughts mattered. And that added fear in this mixture. The reckless abandon and overwhelming emotion of what they shared in the Blood Falls faded into stark realization of what this commitment meant, and she worried she would fail. She knew she would fail. But hadn't she told him that already? The words 'I will fail you' had been promised to him, so why was he surprised when her mortality showed? When the scars of her past turned to nightmares of the present? Would he not do anything to avenge fallen family? They needed to talk, but she was too afraid to lose it all. Only, in the process, she was losing everything slowly. Ophelia wandered south, again, knowing that the God of the Sun could not be too far behind the fray of fighting gods and new lands. There had to be something more out here, beyond the edges of her mental map and into the great unknown. She would take solace and comfort in her travels, ever the wanderer, where she could not take solace in Torleik, not currently. Sand turned to water, and she looked up, realizing that she had passed a point where the sky and the ground matched. Were it not for the ripple from the movement of her hooves, she could very well be dancing in the clouds. Ophelia looked out at the warped horizon, breath catching in her chest. Never had she seen a place so beautiful in all her life. Even the mountains of snow could not compare to this reflection of minimalist perfection, and she blinked in awe. The sound of voices ahead called her attention, and she wandered closer, finding the Sun God giving welcome to more foreigners. Her heart smiled. The most beautiful land of all would belong to the most beautiful of all the gods. Ophelia's expression softened, and she remained on the edges of the crowd, closing her strange, dual colored eyes and inhaling deeply. This was peace. |
