WE HELD TOGETHER THE FRAGILE SKY TO KEEP OUR WAY OF LIFE

[Occurs after until the sky falls]

The dawning revelation was like a slap in the face but in a strangely good way. This oddly familiar black and white, green eyed pegasus wasn't odd at all, nor was she just familiar. She's Iona, in the flesh. The young girl's heart pounds in her chest and her slender body quivers with barely contained excitement. Part of her longed to ask Petyr to bite her with his small but sharp beak; to inflict pain that could wake her from this dream. It is a small part, however, that is easily overruled by her boisterous and gullible inner child.

Iona's green eyes mirrored the flare of recognition in her own. Effectively silencing the doubtful sourpuss inside the young girl. The girl who'd grown solemn over the past several months, suddenly beams with the joy that her mother often possessed. It was a lightness of spirit but also an ever youthful, genuine happiness spreading like wildfire through her veins. Naerys stood a little taller, her teal eyes sparkling with giddy laughter. Oh! Wouldn't mother be so excited? She had found Iona. She would be the one to bring her mother's twin home. It took a sincere amount of effort to keep from erupting with squeals and giggles. Fortunately, however, her aunt's voice bursts the bubble of silence surrounding them. Iona's compliment causes heat to rise in Naerys' cheeks and face once more. The wink and gentle nudge from her wing only causing an awkward bashfulness to rise up in the young girl. "Me?!" she squeaks in surprise. Teal eyes widening for a moment, then she swallows forcefully and continues. "I... no, not me. I'm nothing special." she adds with a slight shrug, her front hooves fidgeting and playing with the dirt and flowers in front of her.

Naerys is grateful for the silence that ensued. Rather glad for the few moments to regain her composure. Just as she lifted her gaze once more, the mare spoke. This time, she couldn't hold back the wide grin. "Of course!" she readily replies. "We'll have to walk, though. Petyr can't fly yet." she explains, gesturing with a slightly movement of her head towards the green bird on her shoulders. Petyr, only days (maybe weeks) old, is still quite helpless. Without some way to safely carry him, the young girl had found herself earthbound. "Don't worry, it's not far. We'll be home in no time." she adds, offering her aunt a reassuring smile before turning around and aiming herself on the path back to the World's Edge to the west.

She moves as quickly as she's comfortable with young Petyr on her back, her small hooves and long legs carrying her with ease across the lands. First, she slips back into the deep forest. Weaving expertly between the thick trees and through the underbrush scattered over the ground. Once the girl is free of the forest, she picks up the pace - eager to find her mother. The land between the forest and home is rather open, allowing for the young girl to transition rather easily into a swift but easy lope. Her trail of flowers acting almost like breadcrumbs. She had no doubt that Iona could keep up. No doubt at all. As she neared the border of her home, she glanced over her shoulder to make sure that Iona was still there. "Careful of the glass shards!" she calls out in warning. Naerys leaps over the shattered remains of the glass wall then slows to a walk before stopping a few feet in from the wall.

"MAMA!" she shrieks, her barely contained excitement no longer barely contained. Exhilarated from the journey, she glances back at Iona then scans the trees and mist of the Edge for any signs of life. Her patience in that moment, however, is short lived. "Mamamamamama!" she shouts as she takes off for mother's usual locations. "MAMA! Where are you?!" She adds rather loudly and unaware of just how much of a commotion she was likely causing. Her joy and childish excitement could not be contained, not at a moment like this.

"It can turn the whole world upside down, shake it 'til the sky falls to the ground.
We don't have to reap the fear they sow, friends, as long as we hide our love away,
In the good they'll never know."

"I beg to differ," Iona countered, with a toss of her dark head and a smirk on her lips. She angled her green gaze down at the girl, but said nothing more.  Instead, she allowed the filly a few moments of composure.

When the girl mentions the little bird - Iona's gaze flicks back to the little creature involuntarily. "Well we'll just have to teach little Petyr when he's old enough now won't we?" she added, with a little nod to the bird nestled on the girl's withers,  "But until then - walking is fine.  It will be a welcome change for me."  It had been a long flight to reach Helovia, it wouldn't be terrible to be afforded the opportunity to stretch her legs as well.

She pulled her wings tighter against her sides - feeling the brush of the trio of feathers tied on the leather cord tied under her right.  It was her last gift from the family that was now out of reach - a permanent reminder that hung amongst the ugly scars around her wing joints.  But she had family here too, and she could rebuild a new life for herself.  Naerys was the perfect reminder of that.  When the girl turned and gestured for her to follow, Iona did without question.  For anyone who truly knew the painted pegasus - this was truly remarkable.

Iona felt completely comfortable following the girl through the dense forest.  Naerys' seemed to be confident in her direction so the painted pegasus followed suit, all the while watching the shadows wearily.  Old habits die hard, and all.  She'd be damned if she let any harm come to her niece before she saw the girl safely back to her sister.  Iona had only just met the girl and would already willingly put herself in harm's way to ensure her safety.  It certainly didn't take much to get Iona's protective instincts ramped up.

The forest slowly gave way to an open plain and Iona did her best to match her pace to Naerys' even though her own legs were significantly longer.  She kept herself at an easy canter as the surroundings swept past the duo.  It was only when Naerys called out to avoid the glass did Iona slow to a walk.

Iona was no stranger to glass.  Nocturne was littered with it  and it was a hazard that you always had to be weary of.  However she'd never seen glass quite like this before.  It seemed utterly out of place.   She stepped carefully over a few errant shards before huffing at her less-than-graceful approach to conquering the hazard.   Finally, she gave up and unfurled her wings and simply leapt over the general area, using her wings to glide and extend the distance to clear the shards.  She landed neatly next to Naerys and offered the girl a sly smile before tucking her wings to her sides once again.

It is only then that Iona affords herself the opportunity to look around.  So this was the World's Edge.  She'd heard Alysanne talk about it but she'd never been able to paint an accurate image in her mind.  She could see why now.  It was…beyond imagination. Especially after having lived for so many years in the ruins of broken cities.

It was only when she heard Naerys' calling out for her mother that the sense of reality returned to Iona. She'd found the Edge.  She'd found her sister's home.  And with any luck - she was about to be reunited with her sister.  It was all too real and kept her in a state of complete disbelief all at once.  Confusion reigned supreme once again so, as if she was a machine, she followed her little niece - legs moving robotically across the place she hoped would become home.

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
"MAMA!"

He nearly choked on the air itself, another voice yelling from his memories—"Dad!"—as the waves threatened to pull her under and keep her from him for forever.

His pale head flung into the air, nostrils widening, eyes glazed over—no no no no, he could think of countless little girls in the Edge who could yell so shrilly, shriek in such a way, and of countless reasons for it happening, things that had nothing to do with wolves or twisted ankles or—

It took him a few seconds of panic to realize that the edge in her voice was not fear, but excitement, and by then he'd already managed to bull forward twenty yards at a mad dash. Frosted hooves dug inelegantly into the spring dirt and brought him to a jarring halt. He breathed out in a quivering snort. No one was dying, but the call kept echoing, until the fog swallowed it completely. Mauja remained where he was, ears flicking atop his head. What was going on? Who was it that called out? Myrrine? Naerys? What other little girls lurked in the fog of his home?

And why was she so desperately seeking her mother? Myrrine's mother wasn't even here; she was trapped in some other dimension. His teeth ground pointlessly against one another.

Well, only one way to find out, really. With the owls off somewhere else he had to rely on instinct and memory, trotting through the forest as fast as he could without tripping over his still-shaking self (adrenaline was a right bastard) or losing track of the way the calls had come from.

In a way, it was soothing—tracking. Following. Doing. The steadfast motion worked the aftermath of his panic out of his system, and by the time he caught sight of a girl who definitely could've been the source of it he had stopped quivering, and the faint sweat on his flanks was nearly dried.

It was Naerys, a young bird chick sitting upon her, wings folded, eyes bright, step exuberant and merry; with her was a stranger, a taller mare with large, black wings. Scars marred her neck and shoulder area, testament to some vicious attack she had lived through. Mauja had never seen her before, but whoever she was, she didn't seem to be Naerys' mother, because they were still clearly looking for someone. And why was it so important to get this mare to her mother?

Nothing about it made sense without the facts he didn't have, but at least no one seemed hurt.

"Uhm," he interrupted pleasantly, curiosity the only thing present on his face as he trotted out of the woodwork, slowing to a walk as he caught up with them. "But what is going on here?"

“Naerys?!” At first Alysanne felt alarm pump the adrenaline through her, instantly assuming the worst was happening. What else was going to tear her family apart? She had heard the rumours of the gods and the battles that had been fought in new lands of Helovia but she had stayed resolutely put in the Edge, unwilling and unable to find the courage to step outside of the borders. She felt angry with herself that her daughter had clearly gotten up to something without her knowledge, or without Hemlock following the girl. He, the little owl, was snoozing in a nearby fir tree when the shouts had woken him up and he flew ahead of his hurrying bonded to see what the trouble was.

But as the shouts continued and her legs brought her closer to the sound, Alysanne realized that her daughter did not sound frightened or hurt. This was the ‘look what I found’ call for her mother. “What are you hollering ab…” But before she could finish the joking chide, before she could make a joke about ‘inside voices’ and when it was appropriate to run through the Edge yelling, Alysanne caught sight of the trio walking together. Mauja, seemingly almost as fresh on the scene as herself, greeting a pair that the painted doctor never thought she would see together. His words were lost to her because though she recognized that her daughter and king (queen?) were there, green eyes were glue to the figure with them.

Without care, a wordless cry of joy erupted from Alysanne, who had been uncharacteristically quiet as of late. Her legs could not carry her fast enough that distance that had been between them and she collided with her sister most ungracefully - wings and neck reaching to wrap around that so familiar figure as a delighted trill of laughter escaped her. She prayed to the goddess that this was no illusion, how could it possibly be that she had her dearest sister in this place, in her home? Tears started to slide down dark cheeks when she pulled back but her smile shone brighter than it had in what felt a very long time.  “You’re here! And you found my… well, you found my Naerys!” She was eager to hear the story, though she worried about where the girl had gotten to, but her manners did not let her forget the other in their party.

Shaking her head to get rid of some of the tears, though not quite succeeding, she looked to the unicorn and explained what she could. “Mauja, this is my sister - Iona.” And still with that grin, for she felt like it would never leave her, she looked to Iona. “This is our queen, Mauja.” She introduced the spotted unicorn with a laugh, unsure whether the title had been a jest but she was in the mood for a joke now - she would ride the bliss associated with this reunion for as long as she could before she crumbled once more. Only now she would have her sister here to help with the pieces that she had not been able to carry herself.

WE HELD TOGETHER THE FRAGILE SKY TO KEEP OUR WAY OF LIFE

Naerys simply nods in response to Iona's words, perhaps a bit more enthusiastically than is necessary but she does so anyway. Soon, though, the two are walking - working their way through the forest with ease. The girl hadn't inherited her mother's sense of direction. Instead, she keeps an impeccable map in her mind and adding to it is as simple as walking down a path once. It'd  been a blessing, to be sure. One that she would make full use of as she grows. Pride swells in her chest when she glances back to see her aunt following closely behind. Naerys doesn't notice her caution, doesn't notice how she keeps a careful watch on the shadows. No. She sees a beautiful, strong mare. A mare she'd grown to idolize through mother's stories.

The girl's arrival is anything but quiet and subtle, unlike Iona's. Her aunt remains silent, simply following behind. There isn't anything to discuss presently, so Naerys thinks little of it. She practically bounces her way through her home, her voice - loud and exuberant - shattering the peace of the Edge in more ways than she really understood at the time. Had she known the panic she'd stir in their hearts, she might have been more careful. Maybe. It's hard to remain poised when one finds someone they never thought they'd get to meet. She doesn't notice him right away but when his voice interrupts her, pleasant despite the ruckus she'd made, she almost throws herself in front of him to embrace him. Almost. "Oh, sorry." she says sheepishly, glancing up at Mauja. "This is -" she begins, but her words are cut off by the arrival of another.

Her mother stands before them quietly, as if frozen in place. "Mama!" she declares, grinning widely. "I found -" she starts to say but her words are once more cut off. Alysanne's sudden charge towards Iona silences the girl, within seconds her mother has Iona in a joyous embrace. Pleased, the girl remains quiet. This was the happiest she'd seen Alysanne in awhile - she wasn't about to ruin it by talking. Suppressing a squeal of delight, she turns her gaze to look up at Mauja again. Silently, she wonders if she and the Queen should mosey along and give the sisters some space but her mother's voice interrupts her train of thought before she can suggest anything.  Instead, she simply watches her mother and aunt with a fondness in her teal eyes.

"It can turn the whole world upside down, shake it 'til the sky falls to the ground.
We don't have to reap the fear they sow, friends, as long as we hide our love away,
In the good they'll never know."

As expected, it didn’t take long for someone to notice the commotion.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t Alysanne.  Iona dipped her head in greeting to the spotted unicorn stallion, who evidently belonged here, but had little time for much else in the way of greeting.  Only moments later the face she had been waiting so long to see emerged from the trees and the thinning mist.

Sorry, she managed to mouth to Mauja as the pieces of the family reunion came together around him.  Of course, Iona had no idea who he was or maybe she’d have tried a little harder to force the words out before getting overwhelmed in the reunion.  But once her eyes fell upon the identical green gaze of her sister the world around her faded into a haze and, for that moment anyway, nothing else mattered.  All that mattered was Alysanne.  Her other half.

Iona pulled her sister close – re-memorizing her scent and her touch, breathing in her skin.  The darker sister couldn’t even make sounds, but the tension visibly eased from every line of her body. “Aly,” she breathed into her sister’s neck – the relief palpable in her voice.  The pieces of Iona’s heavy heart felt lighter than they had in ages.  She takes a moment to rest in her sister’s embrace, soaking in Aly’s warmth.  “I’m here Aly.” Her eyes slid shut for one heartbeat.  Then another.

When they flickered open again she felt more grounded than she had in years. “Naerys found me.  She’s the one that brought me here.” Her gaze switched over to the girl and her little bird and a smile lit on the pegasi’s lips.  “Isn’t that right, Naerys.  You’re an adventurer like your Aunt,” Iona finished, with a conspiratorial wink towards the girl.

She then followed Aly’s gaze back to the unicorn who had, unknowingly, stumbled upon their reunion. Iona offered him a sheepish smile, though her ears flicked back to Aly, momentarily, at her last statement.

Queen?  Well now.  They certainly did do things differently here.  Iona had to stop herself from investigating what such a title could possibly mean in…less than polite fashion.  If he was, in fact, royalty she couldn’t imagine that it was proper to check out his junk so publicly.  She’d have to reevaluate said investigation at a later date.

Regardless of what the spotted unicorn was or wasn’t packing, the title caught Iona off guard. “Uh,” she murmured in a distinctly un-ladylike fashion before composing herself. “It’s good to meet you, Queen Mauja,” she added, though there was still the unspoken question lingering in her tone.  She dipped her head, politely, before continuing. “Nice place,” she managed, more comfortably this time.  She almost added a quip about the crumbling state of that health hazard of a wall not so far from where they stood, but she decided she didn’t want to risk insulting him and his home all in the same breath.  Hi nice place! Your wall’s fucked up and a complete hazard to the adorable baby niece I didn’t know I had!

Yeah.  That could wait.

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
It wasn't exactly like things were about to calm down anytime soon. And wasn't that how it always worked? You roll a rock down a cliff and the whole mountain comes crashing down.

"Oh, sorry. This is - Mama! I found -"

Oh, he thought, wishing he could beat his head against something for just a second. His memory replayed scenes from the only herd meeting he had held, of little Naerys standing by the side of Alysanne, so of course that was her mother—

And her mother just happened to be a derailing freight train—or, in other words, that mountain coming down after Naerys had rolled off a cliff. Mauja's mouth had begun to open, but if he had meant to say anything, he couldn't remember it, because his world had erupted into a black-and-white mess of feathers and love. The rather silent and withdrawn Moon Doctor charged all of a sudden with a shriek that sent the birds into silence, and for half a second Mauja wondered if he should step out in front of the stranger, and shield her from his rather crazed Doctor.

But then the black-and-white mare had nearly run him right over, and Mauja was left sitting back on his haunches and looking mightily confused. Since when had Alysanne had the emotional expressions of a hurricane?

Since today, apparently. The soil was soft against his hocks, and with a grunt he let his hind hooves slide forward until his ass hit the ground instead. Might as well sit it out, and to be honest, there was something quite amusing in the way they embraced. It was just this mess of necks and feathers and noses touching and the whole wing-hug thing was kind of adorable. Still, way to make him feel sort of awkward sitting on the outskirt of what was obviously some kind of happy reunion, so he smiled a little to himself before realizing that Naerys was looking at him.

Well, small wonder, because he just happened to be sitting on his ass. It was bound to get you a few weird looks wherever you did it. He wasn't sure what she wanted from him, though, so he simply winked at her, listening with half an ear to what the two intertwined mares said to each other. Aly, Naerys, Aunt.

“Mauja, this is my sister - Iona.”

Oh, he thought again, wondering why he was so slow to catch on.

"Oh," he actually said, gaze sort of blank. So—wait, what? This was Alysanne's sister? Now that he had them side by side the resemblance was clear, and more than clear—he would have to smell them both pretty thoroughly so he wouldn't get them mixed up later. “It’s good to meet you, Queen Mauja,” Iona was saying after Alysanne had introduced him with a laugh, and Mauja grimaced comically. It wasn't particularly Queenlylike of him to sit like he did, but now that he did—well, uh. It was the matter of getting up again that he wasn't looking forward to, because he was pretty sure he would have to keel over and get up from there, so.. he suspected it would be graceless, and held off trying. He could sit like this a little longer.

"Thank the Moon, I guess," he said, taken by surprise by his own voice. He hadn't meant to say it out loud. "It's her land." His gaze slid to Naerys again. Who was her father, anyway? She looked a fair bit like Alysanne (no shit), but.. well. It could've been anyone who sired her.

Blinking owlishly and feeling delightfully misplaced in this family gathering he returned his eyes to Iona. "Welcome, I guess?" he hedged, the small smile still in place.
