Only the dead have seen the end of war.
He resettles his weight, relieving the weight on his twisted right knee, once Rexanna’s gaze leaves the superficial abrasions there. A low sigh gently leaves his nostrils, “I’ve noticed,” he says dryly to her profession of loving adrenaline. And would he really have it any other way? No. Despite his concern and regard for her safety, he would be bored with a meek and mild mare that stayed away from the battle.
But that did not mean he liked to see her blood leaking from her ears or black mucous coughing from her lungs. He closes his eyes, listening to her soothing, quieted voice. The delicate, sensual tonality mildly mitigated the worst of the pounding reverberating in his skull. Silently he listens to her reason. And she does it well, for she has had the practice of dealing with unruly men. Though he does not think of that— instead he assents to her sensibility in the face of his irritability.
He flicks his thick, onyx tail. The tip swirling in the shallow, salty water. His ears twitch as her perks them— though blood is beginning to dribble from their thick bases. He hears her difficulty breathing, eyes popping open despite the Flat’s glare, to look apprehensively at her. “Rex—” his hushed voice, laced with concern, cuts off. For he does not know wether to ask if she is alright, admonish her to take heed with her breath, or thank her for dealing with his irritation. The pain in his head make it difficult to form words and the many choices of words only amplify the pain. It is a vicious cycle.
So he sighs defeatedly, taking a halfhearted step towards her as he flicks his bleeding ear backwards. “I’m glad you are relatively alright, my love. I can accompany you back to the Basin before I return to the Edge,” he offers quietly, his own type of apology for being so terse with the delicate mare of gilded cream.
