Only the dead have seen the end of war.
Whisper had been quiet on their walk— but then again, so had he. It had been a taxing evening, for all parties involved. So he had let the emotional hangover work itself out in the silent, late morning walk to the Edge. Though he should have kept a closer eye on the large mare, for it was clear more than exhaustion plagued her as he watched her walk over the glass, now. She was twitching, eyes flicking nervously to and from Astra.
He perked his ears at her words. “A war? No, calm yourself Whisper. Herdlands have borders, and those borders have protection. From predators, crooked sorts, and the like,” his deep voice was calming, words placating. He watched her and Astra closely, as the filly scampered obliviously over the sharp minefield. And Whisper was clearly not in the present, as her fazed eyes and drawn face were haunted once more by her past.
“Whisper, watch the gl—” his words were cut short as she crashed to the ground among the razors. He trumpets in alarm, raising slightly on his forelimbs and crashing his large hooves down. The sea of glass shards dissolved to mist and water in the face of his thudding hooves and dread. “Are you alright?” his words were quick, as quick as his sweeping strides to the fallen mare.
Astra rose, carefree as the butterfly she chased. Luckily, she played at his tail, so he need not worry about her finding more glass. But Whisper— he sighed as she rose, revealing the bloody wounds on her knees. The glass had melted out of her wounds in the face of the Glazier’s magic. But the damage was done. “Moon doctor!” he pitched his rumbling voice to carry deeply over the Edge. Hopefully one of their healers would hear him. “Stay still, Whisper. Hopefully a healer will be here soon. And you, trouble,” he fixed his jested words but serious gaze on the filly, “Stick close.”
